In recent weeks I got a 12A150 [barely used], and yesterday UPS dropped a Sig 12S Alnico I ordered because I wanted to hear the difference for myself of a $195.00 to a $45.00 Speaker.
Here is what I am finding out. I think I am going to be a Weber Speaker convert from what I am experiencing so far.
The Alnico 12S, even not broken in yet, is unreal for $45.00 shipped. Not as efficient as the 12A150, and @ 25 watts VS the 50 Watt 12A150 I will be careful where I put or use the 12S.
I'd say, the transition from clean to compressed at volume is smoother in the 12A150 then the 12S. I wonder if the 12S after being broken in will improve in this area. Both are so smooth and creamy yet still bright when OverDriven. The 12S seems to exhibit less cone cry than the 12A150. But the used 12A150 must not have been as used or broken in as I was told or thought. After a few hours of me banging signal through it the cone cry is all but gone. Both speakers are undoped.
Something else I have learned is that I am diging undoped speakers, I have only ever used doped or heavy doped speakers until these.
A/B ing them with 4, 16-18, and 30 watt tube amps..
Also, I am wondering if my ears will hit the end of a honey moon period with them, so I can not wait to get them out with at least a 3 piece.
I want to try the Sig 12B ceramic, should be a great fit in any/all of my EL84 Amps.
Anyone using a Sig 12B Ceramic ??
So far i would ay the Sig 12S Alnico sounds maybe 70% as good for 25% of the money. But it is not broken in yet either... te 12S is not quite as articulate, but the harmonics and overtones are on par pretty much.
Anyway, there is one 'hack guitarists' observations / opinion on it.
