Capacitor help!

Hi,

I'm building a optical compressor (tonepad DOD280) it calls for 4 x 0.05uf (50nf) capacitors in the circuit.

For some reason these appear to be hard to get hold in the UK?? I've got plenty of 0.047uf (47nf) capacitors (these seem very common in fx circuits). So can i substitute these for them?

Before I get shot, I realise the creator of the circuit specifies these because they work best, but how much of a difference would it make?

Many thanks

Matt

Yeah, that's fine. Older designs often use values like that, ex. 20uF electrolytic caps instead of 22uF, but nothing modern generally does.

0.047uF is within 10% of 0.05uF anyways, and actually if you were to measure those caps with a multimeter you'd probably find that one or two of them are at or even larger than .05uF.

I just want to echo that the 47 nF capacitors you have are fine. The 50 nF isn't a standard value these days and as already mentioned, they're within 10% of each other (although they're probably 20% caps anyway).

Thanks for replies, put in 47nf caps (got loads of them).

I'm going to have a go at the Multi Face as per 11 Gauges post so I can get a better idea of what happens when you alter the cap values.

Many thanks

Agreed a 47nF is an acceptable swap for 50nF capacitor in just about anything.
