I thought I would start a Club for all the Thinline owners out there in TDPRI land.
I looked in the owners area and didn't see one dedicated to Thinline owners of any model so lets see your 69's - 72's - RI's - Partscasters & Clones

Here is my 2004 - "69" Thinline Telecaster RI w/ Mahogany Body (MIM)

Can I join if I don't have one???
My first "real" guitar was a 69 thinline, mahogany body, maple neck, two single coils. Awesome guitar. Only thing, it was a righthanded single cutaway guitar turned upsidedown. Around 1972 I saw a used lefthanded Tele, hard to find then, in a local store. Swapped guitars. It was for the best but if that thinline was lefthanded I'd still be playing it today.

You sure can!
Maybe you will come across a lefty model in the future (not sure if they ever made any except Elliot Easton's Custom shop model he posted the other day)
or
make it a partscaster project in the future

Here's my 2006 MIM '69 Thinline Re-Issue. I had Lollar Special T and Charlie Christian pickups installed, replaced the original bridge with a Wilkinson compensated, replaced the original 1 meg pots with 250k and replaced the original white pearloid pickguard with a tortoise shell pickguard. It's a great sounding guitar with the Lollars and pot change.

I want to get a kit and assemble a lefty thinline. I want the body to be blizzard pearl grey, so it matches my beautifully dull left handed tele and strat.... Gonna cost, though...

In the mean time, I do love my lefty G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy. ...

I bought it second hand in a private sale from a friend. I suggested that he needed a Tele and when he needed money he remembered that I loved his guitar. Now it's mine! I bring it to both my country band and blues band practices.

I love it when the top vibrates and I can feel the air blow out of the f hole on my forearm when I play.

An original '72 that belonged to my father:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/dabluzeguy/72%20thinline/72thinline1-1.jpg

When he bought it, it had a Stratocaster A neck and Bill Lawrence humbuckers. He found a '72 Thinline neck on eBay, bought 4-5 WR humbuckers and chose the best two for the guitar, and had a new pickguard made.

He sold it a few years ago, but here are the pictures I took for the sale:

some great guitars here,

and here's my mim 72 thinline in surf green, I fitted the fender issue bigsby myself and i love it! as you may have noticed i still need to paint the filler from the holes of the original bridge, i've also changed the pots from 250k to 500k and it makes a very worthy improvement

I haven't heard that about the Thinlines...
Does it really matter if a Mexican in Baja California runs the CNC program vs. a Mexican in California?

Ok, so I'm looking for the humbucker tone, my choices are the Les Paul Traditional, Epiphone Sheraton and the Fender 72 thinline. Let me say, more expensive doesn't always mean better. I played them all this weekend, and I decided on a 72 thinline in 2 tone sunburst. The LP just dodn't feel right, gorgeous guitar, but when I picked it up it just didn't come alive in the feel, the pickups were nice though. The Epiphone tone was nice but the overall quality just wasn't there. The 72 felt right when I picked it up (but then again I'm familiar w/ a tele) and the wide range humbuckers are quite nice, good thick warm tone. The finish is superb and the quality is very good!
I'll get some pictures out soon.

So, this has a modern neck radius, modern fret size and a 4 bolt neck join. Signified by the white, not pearloid, etc. pickguard.

The black version went for $ 499 on MFFF, yesterday.

If the beautiful sunburst one were to follow, could we resist?

Grabbed this on eBay a month or so ago, thought I'd post. The EMG noiseless pickups weren't my first choice, but the price was right and I'm very happy with the guitar. Plays like a dream and the sound is very clean. Perhaps not as twangy as a stock tele, but very nice. Love the neck, body style, and weight, though.

Post #35 is wrong; This is just a Special Edition, white pickguard version. Not the CP.

If you're in Jakarta, you should try to get yourself a CIJ version

On the weekend, I ended up buying a CIJ 72RI Thinline back from a guy that I had previously sold it to on eBay. I had forgotten how good this particular guitar was. It's just an awesome playing and sounding guitar. Took it to my local Jam night last night so that some other guitarist could have a play - the response was unanimous - they all loved it.

It is pretty hard to find a lefty thinline.
I re-routed a B stock S/X thinline copy for humbuckers, painted it with nitro and put on a bigsby. Would like to get some compensated saddles for it but otherwise she is fun to play fer sure.

I got one, too--hooray for me--a MIM 69 reissue skinny-line. Paid 475, used, and it was mighty clean. It's a three-tone sunburst with white pickguard. Mods: El Torres pups, bumblebee cap, 500 CTS pots, Calahan bridge, saddles, and jackplate, Switch Craft jack, salvaged old Strat three-way pu selector, and locking tuners. I've got four electric guitars, and the skinny Tele is far and away my favorite.

Until I saw this Thinline, the only black guitar that I ever really craved was an ES335/Epi Dot....never cared for a black Tele or Strat. But your Thinline is outstanding. Makes me wish my mahogany Thinline was black as well.

Marto & tcarp: The Thinline thanks you for your praise. I didn't install the CC, so I don't know how difficult an installation it was. Looks aside, this is one of the best sounding and most versatile guitars I've ever played. I'd recommend the Lollar Special T and CC combination to anybody. Lollar also now offers a bridge version of the CC called the B.S. (don't know what that stands for) that sounds pretty good in some YouTube demos I've heard.

No ones said anything about the TONE. my MIJ 69 is a little thin on the lead pickup but I get some fantastic tone when I go to the neck pickup and roll off a bit of volume and treble. just so smooth and glassy. after adding a 5 way switch I have several in series sounds that really roar. all my friends play it and ask "how much?". no plans on selling this one anytime in the near future.

I have been watching ebay and Southern California Craigs lists for over a year looking for a lefty '72 original or a MIJ -72 Reissue. No luck so I am now building one. When I figure out how, I will post a pix showing the lefty body, etc that I am starting with. I plan to use the GFS Vintage thinline pups since the body is routed for standard HBs and the pickguard is also. Has anyone used them and how do they sound??

My quest now is to find a lefty vintage tele neck with a 10-32 tapped truss rod so I can install a Bullet nut. Any ideas or comments ???

There's a "used" MIM 72 Thinline at the GC in Winter Park, FL that they'll let you have for $ 405 plus tax. Virtually unused, and the bridge is properly centered unlike some. Clear finish and usual pickguard. Marked at $ 449, as for Brendan.

Not light, and not exceptionally pretty, but $ 404 is $ 404 and it sounds pretty nice. Makes me wonder if the MIM Reissue Wide Rangers work better on a heavier body guitar.

2007 guitar. The neck is very nice, unplayed condition. Nice fretwork. I'd buy it but I simply have way too many now.

This is one of the rare occasions I bought a guitar specifically to flip, since I got it for a pretty good price. I have 3 other Teles, and though none have rosewood boards and none are thinlines, I can't afford a 4th to keep right now, even an inexpensive one. So I will only have this a short time, I'm guessing. It will go up on local craigslist shortly.

Body and neck MAR69. Came with Neck Humbucker and Schaller tuners and brass bridge.Skunk Stripe was loose, neck needed refinish.Found original bridge and tuners later in different shops.Replacement pickguard and electronics.
Ultraviolet light shows there once was a playboy-sticker under the bridge
before it came to europe(imported in the eighties from California by German guitar Guru Erhard Bochen ) Gave him a mint G&L Broadcaster (one of hundred
signed by Leo Fender) and thousand Deutsche Mark for it.
But i love the light weight, its my main guitar now.

Welcome aboard jonle.

I'm sure a few bargain hunters will say it's too much, but assuming the guitar is good, $500 is fair price and the case is a nice bonus.

I think you're doing all right.

I paid less, got no case, and the frets were worn so I've got precious little fret left on the neck since I leveled them. Some guys will have paid more, and some less but the important thing is getting one that plays well.

That's not a bad price with case as originally they came with gig bag. Then you have to buy a decent case for more money. I bought a coffin case for mine. I've had those Fender rectangle cases and for me they are a pain.

Hey all. I can finally join the '72 Telecaster Thinline Club. I officially bought a '72 Thinline yesterday. It should be here this week. I am drooling all over myself waiting to get it. I have a Mesican Tele, a 335 Gibson, a Les Paul Standard, a USA Lone Star Strat, a Gibson SG Standard, an Epi 12-string, a COO57 Ovation Acoustic/Elec, and a Conn D7 Classical. I rarely play anything other than my Tele any more. It may have to take a back seat to the new Thinline.http://www.tdpri.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=76202&stc=1&d=1300082600

So the Squire thinline arrived. It surprised me. The sound is arguably this best telecaster sound of all the telecasters I've owned and this is my 3rd in my current telecaster collection and about the 10th I've owned. I liken the sound to say, Paul Revere and the Raiders telecaster sound on their recordings and Commander Cody.

I've changed just a few things like the output jack, bigger stainless steel frets, Seymour Duncan (SH-1N I think) humbucker neck/DiMarzio Area Hot T bridge. Strung with LaBella's 12-52.
It's not an amazing instrument, but I like it's versatility. And it is light which makes a difference.

As of this evening, I am in the Thinline club! I picked up a 2007 '72 MIM FSR with a translucent honey color for very little money. There is however, a catch. The reason this brand new guitar was inexpensive was because somebody had dropped it and put a significant hole/gash in the bottom of the guitar, which produced a crack which went almost completely went through the f-hole. Everything else is fine on it, but I am wondering where to turn for a replacement body with the three-hole neck pocket.

Can one of the '68 Thinline Thin Skins join this club? I did not see a general or more broad based Thinline club.

I went to get what I thought would be a Gibson ES or Gretsch at the famous Dave's shop and this 6 pound Telecaster grabbed me. It's different than my 52 AVRI in pleasant ways and very impressive in terms of build quality. Intonation is best of the 3 different 3 saddle type Telecasters I've owned.

Dave's had custom shop models in stock and I was really impressed with how this guitar stacked up. Its origin is a little curious because it does not say made in US anywhere but it has a certificate of authentication as "Factory Special Run". Is this maybe because an actual 1968 model would not say Made in USA?

I'm curious to know which of the tonal differences between it and my 52 AVRI are attributed to the body and pickups.

Wow! Super nice! Love the single coils version of the Thinline ('69) with the natural ash finish (it reminds me of the one on the cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'Curtis Live' LP, BTW). I guess it doesn't say 'made in USA' for the reason you've suggested (to be closer to the originals -that's also why American Vintage series doesn't mention 'M I USA" anywhere, too)

I noticed a few guys have 72's that have pickguards for single coils or normal size humbuckers. Did you have these custom made or is there a source that has them? I know about that site that will custom make them, but i was hoping someone had them pre made and cheaper. Still not sure i want to keep the guitar so i don't want to spend too much not knowing if i'll keep it after a p/u change.

Thanks for your answer I would love to get a second thinline so a MIJ would also be a good alternative to the more pricey american séries

I just bought this one off the GC used site. should have it by early next week. I looked at a lot of pics on the web,and on all the other 72 RI's there is a Strat type bridge and saddles. can someone tell me what kind of bridge this is? anyone else have this bridge and saddles on a 72' RI? any other info you can give would be grateful.thanks

As far as the original 72 vintage they all have the six saddle bridge I never seen one with the three double saddle it could be a replacement part

It seems to be installed on teh GE Smith Telecaster model as well

Gotta join...

This is an older photo of my CIJ's. 2006 (burst), 2004 (natural).

The burst is gone, but the natural now has original Fender USA Seth Lovers from the 70's & it also has a black guard.

I'll have to post an updated photo of that at some point.

OK, I'll join the club, but you will have to wait for pictures. I have a '72 Telecaster Thinline I purchased in December of 1972. It's been in storage since February 1989 and I am in the process of making it playable again.

This Is my 2002 MIM 69 tele, I've had it from new. It's great to see so many people with them on here, they're lovely guitars.
I should take a proper photo of it one day!

2004 Thinline Tele 1969RI. Just the regular mahogany thinline. Nothing special except it's mine. I love it. I did change the bridge to a Joe Barden & the electronics to 250K pots, new cap, switchcraft jack & 3 position switch.

Here's my Thinline, 1972 standard tele neck. The things been converted to 4 bolt at one time, a bit of a mutt. Had it for several years and it's a great neck that practically plays itself. Some of the coolest sounding pickups I've ever played but I've never pulled the pickguard off to inspect them because the pickguard is crumbling in places and I'm afraid it'll totally fall apart. I'll get to it one of these days cause I'm curious what this thing is but it's been such a great players guitar I just play the darn thing. It twangs, it rocks, it does it all.

G'day WP!!! it's a high end CIJ model...1994 build!! haven't been able to find out a lot about it...only arrived y'day although l did some research last week w'out much success!!! i'll post back if l can get some definitive model number...sorry l couldn't be more informative!!

Edit! been on a lot of sites today... stratmaniac.com was really good.. he has photographed every Japanese brochure from the early 80's to '97...still didn't uncover my Lass amongst them...the guitar serial starts with S with 6 numbers which may date it to '94,... Japanese numbering can be obscure at best.

If any body can shed some light it would be appreciated...all l really know is it's a limited edition model.

I just got one today in a trade, my first Thinline! The last guy aged it...... Not so greatly. He sanded through to the wood in a few spots, should I take it the rest of the way and finish in oil maybe? It also has a bigsby, that I'm going to replace with a standard vintage bridge. Mine is a MIM made in 2006 or so, mahogany body, but has a 4 bolt pattern for the neck..... Is this normal or should it be 3?

So far that's the very first Thinline Custom that I see which has a mahogany body I tought that Fender had only produces them with ash bodies ??? I'm very interested by your beautiful instrument I had the will to have one build for me by Danocaster because I have a swamp ash Thinline but was dreaming of having a mahogany

Your impressions on the acoustic sound would really interest me a lot

G'day Jipes!!! firstly the acoustic qualities are excellent!! it's got a lovely voice just strumming some chords!!! l just put a set of EB Cobalt 10-46's which brought out the resonance ... the standard American Strat style bridge is a bit of a tone sucker l suspect!!! may go with a Rutters Burrito half bridge w/ brass saddles!! l pulled it apart y'day & checked out the guts!!! all stock as a rock in the electronics.. the WR Pups look like they've had a working over... me & a mate from the pro shop just fired her up... man!!! very warm & very good definition!!! my mate was constantly praising the guitars sound!! we know each other well enough if we don't like something then we can be honest!! l had to agree & was pleasantly surprised!! from the first strum it had a lovely presence!! because of it's rarity; l may now shelve plans to modify it!! time will tell!! thank you!!

Vintage bridge
Maybe refinish in oil since the last owner sanded through to the wood while aging it

Thanks for the details I'm really happy for you, I was sure that the mahogany body with a pair of Wide Range pickups would be a great combination. Do you know now the exact denomination of this particular model ? I've screen the Net but there's no trace of that one

Thanks Jipes!!! Your guess is as good as mine!! i'll have to do some more research!! A store in Japan could have ordered a special batch like Wildwood guitars do with their US Fenders!! you can get a special spec git from Fender Japan in this manner... that's my hunch at this stage!!! l'll contact some dealers & see what l uncover!! cheers!!

Is this a dead thread?

I just bought a new American Vintage 69 in 2 Tone Sunburst. Ships to me today and should be here by the end of the week.

I can finally put the loss of my original REAL 69 behind me, since this new guitar is as close to a dead ringer for my original as any instrument I have been able to see for sale.

I picked up a 2006 mim 69 thinline in a pink color. I've gotten a twisted tele for the neck and a Broadcaster for the bridge. I've also picked up new controls, a 4 way switch and 250k cts pots. I'm reversing the controls so that the pickup switch is at the bottom and the volume is directly under the leading edge of the bridge pickup so that volume swells are easier.
Does anybody know of any resin that will work to fill the existing pickguard cutouts? Or should I just bite the bullet and order a custom made replacement pickguard with the control positions reversed?
Also, any other mods you would suggest while I'm at it?

Thanks for your input.

I have a 72 Thinline Sunburst with WRHB's on the way, and it has a white parchment pickgaurd. I am not a fan. I want to either get a Pearloid or Black one. I looked on the Warmoth site, but there is a disclaimer that says their pickguards only fit on their Warmoth bodies. Is this really true? Is this just a CYA from them? Help!

I have some info for you on where to get a pickguard done well, reasonably priced and shipped quickly. PM me, and I will look it up. It is a guy here in Arizona. Nice work. Ironically, I went the other way- replaced my pearloid one (not a fan) with parchment. I like it a lot better. I have some Lollar Regals sitting there wating for me to find time to replace the stock ones.

I would sell you my PG, but I think I am going to try and sell the whole guard loaded- I need the money for a MUCHXS 5E3!

I am assuming the one you have coming is a RI MIM? A quick check on ebay shows lots of pearloid ones for sale- no black. The guy I bought mine from is
"AIGUITARS"- he is an ebay seller. Just search 72 Thinline pickguard on the bay...
