ROG "Professor Tweed" - mods for more range on the tone pot?

I just built a Runoffgroove "Professor Tweed" OD pedal http://www.runoffgroove.com/professor.html (used a PCB from here: http://olcircuits.com/olc_professortweed.html ); sounds great, very natural, "amp-like".
I did some mods to it already - found this thread via google: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=77220.0;prev_next=prev (I think Uma Floresta is a member here, too?).
The mods shown include upping the 1st and 3rd bypass caps from 22nF to 100nF - didn't have 100nF caps on hand, so i used 68nF for the first and 56nF for the third bypass cap - this does indeed make the Professor Tweed sound a bit fatter.
I also tried different values for the 4.7nF cap on the tone pot (which is modded to 15nF in the link above) - but I'm still not happy with that tone pot: it simply does not do a whole lot, there's almost no change in tone over most of the range of that pot; only on the lowest 1/8th of the turning range, the sound gets a bit less present; this was more pronounced with using higher value caps (like 33nF); I finally settled on the 15nF cap from the page linked above, but would still like to hear more of a change.
Should I try other values for the 470pF cap coming from that 3rd lug of the tone pot? What would raising/lowering that cap value do to the tone pot?

I'm in the planning process for a "Professor Tweed". I've built the Ruby from them as my intro to building pedals/amps. I'd really like to hear what others have done with the Prof Tweed before I start building one.

I built one of these a while ago - might have to try out some of those mods!

What JFETS did you use in yours? I couldn't find any J201's so I used 2N5457 throughout

Here's a picture of mine!

As you might guess it's quite cramped in there! (even crammed a 9v in there, and used solid wire throughout so it's pretty stiff!)
Might make the mods a little tougher to do!

If I get around to mod it i'll report back :)

Looks nice!

I use MPF102 trannies in mine.
Played around with some mods - even with different cap values, the tone control is way too subtle for my taste so I replaced it with a fixed resistor; instead, I included the tone control from Uma Floresta's mod page above - way more useful.

Where did you get that red box?? That's pretty cool... If you back-light with a red LED that would be something I'd have to try!

Hey Roman -
I think what you are calling a 'bypass' capacitor is better known as a coupling cap in this case, but you are clear enough that I see what you mean. A larger cap will add bass. For the Tone pot - I think I see the trouble there. Look at the output filter. Two low pass filters is a row is a 2-pole filter. That goes to show they are trying to 'round the corners' of the square waves it is producing. If you have a generator and a scope, you will be surprised to scope buth sides of that filter. That is the trouble with the tone control - there is too much gain AFTER the tone pot to matter. That is why high gain amps put the EQ at the end of the gain stages in the preamp. The fix may be simple. Try this: move the Tone pot wire connected to its wiper from the volume pot wiper to the trim wiper. Next, move the 470nF from the gate of the second tranny to the gate of the third. You still may want to mess with the values, but you should have more range from the control.

FenderLover :

The red box is a Hammond 1591 in Infra Red (It's completely see-through to IR cameras IIRC!)

You can see them here : http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg2c.htm

Also, I do infact have a water-clear red LED inside in the middle of the 3 knobs ;) It's hard to take a photo of to show it off though (was hard enough taking that photo! hence the lamp underneith!)

I got the box from an English supplier called Rapid, but somewhere like Mouser should carry them...

Thanks for the insight into the Tone pot - you clearly know your stuff :D I just "paint-by-numbers" sorta thing! I'll try what you suggested aswell when I get in the mood :)

Thanks, FenderLover! To late, though, as I mentioned, I already replaced the tone pot with fixed resistors, and used an low-pass filter before the output as a tone control; I like what the ProfessorTweed does now, though it could have a bit more output (I have to keep both the volume and master volume almost wide-open to get unity gain...)

BTW, I used a similar transparent red Hammond bopx, with the LED inside, for a mini booster I built a while ago:
