I recently bought my son a Logan Custom Tele style guitar. He chose, among other features, a 3-ply tortoise pickguard, so I’ve been waiting until I had pics (and a working computer) to post about it in this thread.

The body is a Bob Logan “Logo” Thinline (i.e., the cutout is Bob's "logo") with South American Cedar veneers, natural tint. The neck and fretboard is Birdseye Maple with a light amber tint, 22 medium jumbo frets, Modern C shape, 9.5 radius. The appointments are chrome, with a Wilkinson vintage bridge and Wilkinson Alnico 5 pups, standard 3-way switching, and of course, the tortoise 3-ply pickguard.

Since I’ve been working lately on my wife’s computer, I don’t know if Bob sent a notice about its being shipped out, but hopefully it’ll be here by the middle of next week. Here are some of the pics Bob sent of the finished product. FWIW, I think she’s a beauty.

Okay, I just flat wasn't paying attention. Androo was clear that he had added the Kent Armstrong P-90 to an acoustic 5th Ave, and that he added "stealth thumbwheel knobs to the tort." But somehow I was just focused in my mind on the 5th Ave Kingpin that comes stock with a P-90 and control knobs in the lower bout of the body. Sorry about that.

Okay, the body is a solid single piece of Hackberry. It is finished in a mixture of medium Danish Oil and red automotive tint. I then applied a couple coats of MinWax Wipe On Poly. It has a Maple neck with maple fingerboard that has been finished with nitro.

It has sealed Grover style tuners, and a vintage style adjustable bridge with 3 brass saddles. Strings can mount through the body or on the bridge.

The pickups are Vintage '53 Style Tele Pickups by my friend Mike Turk from Bracebridge, ON. I can't say enough good things about Mike Turk's pickups. They sound totally awesome!!! It is wired like a standard Tele.

That's it in a nutshell.

Hey Larry....yup, it's the cognac burst. Actually, I ended up buying the no pup version, called the 5th Avenue (The Kingpin is the p90'd version), and added my own pup to it. I've heard that the stock Kingpin P-90 is pretty decent.

Yeah, I've played the Kingpin and knew there was a difference. Like I said before, I was just not paying attention. Funny how that works sometimes; I so totally thought "Kingpin" when I saw yours that neither your pic nor the text of your post got past the mental image I had. You were clear enough the first time around. If I had been paying attention to what you actually wrote, I would have picked up on the difference. Or if I had just paid attention to the pic, I would have noticed that the control knobs were not in the lower bout of the guitar. What can I say? Sometimes the ol' brain just takes a holiday. My bad.

I've replaced the neck pup in this one with a Strat-sized pickup. It has no pickup cover so I have my choice: leave it uncovered or cover it with white, black or more tortoise shell. Thoughts? Would tortoise-on-tortoise be too much? Anyone have pictures of one? I've searched the web and only found one picture, on the Gear Page.

My search for tortoise Strat pickup covers reveals them to be about at rare as hen's teeth. Those that you find are actually black Strat covers with tortoise veneer. I ended up going with white, which looks pretty sexy against the tortoise guard -- in a Clarence White's B-Bender Tele kind of way.

Did the Fender tortoise shell pickguards from the 60's ever gas out (crumble) or did they just shrink? I have a 64 Jazzmaster with no problems but I'm in the process of replacing three Gibson pickguards, two from 1970 and another from 1981.

Different composition?

Yeah, that is one reason I decided to put this pickguard back on a guitar.

Tort pickguards seem to be most susceptible to all manner of twisting and what have you. Don't just leave them lay around. Screw 'em to a piece of scrap if you have to and slip them in something out of the light.

Don't know if this should count. It's a First Act guitar that came to me black, with stock humbucker, and missing the pickguard. Now it's white with a Gibson P-90. I made a pickguard out of clear plexiglass, printed out a picture of a tortoise shell pattern, cut it to fit and stuck it behind the plexiglass. The headstock logo reads "Gib-non."
