Greetings, I was just curious how this technique is done where the top is stained/finished differently than the back. Is it strictly masking? Anybody have any examples of teles finished similarly? Thanks!

Masking is the only way I could imagine, then clear coat the whole thing :)

It's been discussed here before and here is an explanation from the StewMac site. (http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/Finishing/Colors,_stains/a-blueguitar.html)

Here's Jwells393's take on the binding technique.

Thanks. I've got some stripers tape and some painter's tape as well. I may actually mask off the body wood first and get a good coat of poly clear on the maple caps; then mask off the caps and stain the body. I'm thinking that even if the stain bleeds a bit, it's not going to sink into the poly like it would the bare wood.

Yeah, all about terminology. You might want to try a search for "PRS binding" or something similar.
