MIJ '62RI Saddle Replacement Question

I picked up a beautiful black/doulble bound '62RI from this very forum recently and really love it. It has the threaded steel saddles which is something I haven't had on a tele before and has a more pronounced, direct sound. Seriously twangy.

I am curious, really just as an experiment, what brass saddles would sound like, or perhaps a combo of the two types (like Brad Paisley does).

Would the standard supplier brass saddles, preferably compensated, work on the MIJ teles? Would I need to replace the bridge plate as well or could I just pick up the saddles and slap them on?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have a 2007 CIJ ´62, which came also with the mentioned threaded saddles. I´m not a tele expert but would also describe them as very twangy, which i liked very much, actually :-). But I had another problem with them - the saddles´ deep bottomed , v-shaped and thread-angled grooves (light angle between thread grooves and string lines) did no good to the e and b strings sustain (it took pretty long to find out the cause). So I changed them to 1/4 " steel barrels (grooved) from ´78 MIA and am happy ever since. For a while this guitar had brasses (compensated Wilkinsons) which were also not bad, but kinda felt `too warm´.

Thanks for the info. Exactly what I needed. I think I will try a set of comp'd brass saddles and just check out the difference. This guitar is so great it is worth the few bucks to experiment and see how much more tone I can wring out of it.
