I don't see many Tremolux amps around these days, but I sure love mine. Wonderful blackface tone, great tremolo, dual 10's, tone, vibe and mojo in spades. She's stock, except for the grounded AC cord.

Anyone else?

Here's mine :

Ok, I'm gonna cheat.

This is mine! A tweed Tremolux clone, made by a local company MG Music. Weber speaker. Terrific amp!

How about former owners?

I gigged with blond/oxblood Tremolux in high school in the late 60's. Nine piece soul band, gold tuxes, steps, life never got better than that!

Dang! Get those pics up Tarnisher! What a great amp you've got!!!

Ricky D. - did you live on the west coast back then? If so, we were probably in the same soul band! Wish I still had my gold suit!!! I've had my Tremolux since I was a teenager. ;)

Here's another shot of my Tremolux with my current squeeze, Miss Cora. :)

I have wanted a Tremolux since about 1968. Several...well, maybe more...years ago a beautiful head came up on eBay and as I was watching the clock run down my lovely wife said I should buy it for my birthday...YES!

I thought the white tolex/BF models rare, Leo using up parts. Cannot quite make out the date stamp, "N I" or "N L" maybe, transformer date code shows it cannot be older than '64.

Play it through VibroWorld 1-12" cab, white Tolex-Tremolux sized, that I also got off ebay. Only mismatch is that the cab has wheat grille cloth while the amp has the gold.

I'm glad to see some Tremolux love around here. I've always thought they had a distinct and excellent voice. After a tweed and two BF's, here's the one I kept. Dec '62, all original (except for tubes and caps). Really clean - doubt this one was ever gigged. The 2X10 Oxfords are very punchy, and these are great sounding amps with Teles.

A Newell combo cab just sold on eBay, blonde for a Tremolux chassis with one 12" speaker slot. Just what I was intending to do in a few months. It was even blonde! Damn...

No matter, just will have to get Crusty to build one for me...gave me a good quote a while back.

It appears what is missing from the photo series on your amp, Fabio, is a good image of the control panel...eh?

Since the image that is posted was taken, I have added the hardware to firmly attach the head to the cab, so it can be slanted back...way '60's surf!
The original seller of the head promised to send me the orignal sliding brackets...twice...but I never received them and then he moved.

I actually bought the cab first, which had a huge EV speaker in it. Huge and heavy. I eventually sold that on eBay and after trying my old (Radio Schack) Jensen S12N (way, way too bright), I tried a Reverend Alltone 1250 just as they stopped producing them. Perfect!

Alas, as I do not play out, she doesn't get the use she should, but I am keeping her around as I have a surf thing stuck in my head and she would be perfect for that...along with the brown reverb unit that is also down cellar.

I think this is a 1963 tremolux. The paper piece in the head says the production number is #1, all original, tubes ,foot pedal, speakers, sounds great. The 1978 Tele I've had only 9 months. put muy grandes in it and it stays tuned to open G. My everyday tele is a 62 RI with a Hipshot B-bender also with rio grande pic ups, tall boys.

Bought head only in 1988 and couldn't find a correct speaker cabinet. One weekend in 1989 I got a wild hair and decided to build a combo ala Mesa Boogie with 1, 12" 35 watt Celestion. She's still going strong after 20 years of weekly gigging. The only effect I use is a little analog delay occassionally. The tone is priceless.

I've had 2-an early-to-mid '62,pictured left-a Christmas present that year and traded in a year and a half later on a new BF Concert.I must have looked at that amp's tube chart hundreds of times and never even noticed the date stamp. The other Tremo(a Dec.'63,pictured right) I bought 4-5 years ago from a college pal who'd bought it new in late '63 because he liked mine. They came from the same store-E.U. Wurlitzer in Boston,so I feel like it has a connection to my old one, which I've often regretted trading off.Except for the wheat grillcloth,it's just like the other one and sounds the same. The Gent in both pics is the same one, bought new July '63.It still looks like it did then, but I don't.

Hi there,

I just bought myself a december 1962 Tremolux, 100% original, great amp! My question is: I have a set of NOS Tungsol 5881 tubes, can I put them in the amp? Do I have to re-bias and how should that be done? What are the risks of putting the NOS 5881's in the amp without re-biasing?
Thanks!

Showman cabs were either 1 or 2 15".I'd think that cskyle's is a Bandmaster, since the threaded holes on top line up with the sides of the head cab and the speaker cab looks distinctly wider and taller than a Tremolux cab.Nice looking BF amp.Nice-looking gold Strat, too!

I gigged with blond/oxblood Tremolux in high school in the late 60's. Nine piece soul band, gold tuxes, steps, life never got better than that!

The very first amp I ever owned was a black/silver one. I think it was a 1963 or 1964 version. I bought it at a garage sale in 1972 - I paid $125 for it, plus $75 for a 1963 Tele.

I've long since sold the amp, but still have the Tele! It's the one and only Tele I've ever owned and it's been my #1 since I bought it. Funny how I paid more for the amp than the guitar, but think about the current price for each.

Cheers,
Doug

We just watched "Crazy Heart" the other evening; Jeff Bridges plays "Bad Blake", a fading country singer and songwriter. It's a very well done film IMHO, but the true star of this movie is the tweed Tremolux that Bad Blake plays through at all his gigs and concerts... it makes that Gretsch sing!

I have a 64 or 65 Tremolux I bought in a pawn shop in 69 for $125--same price I paid for the 64 Strat. Previous owner had replaced the speakers with 12s-Electro something or other--no longer made. I replaced the speakers with Weber alnico 12's--I thought I could use the original baffle board but the previous owner had messed it up and I wound up making a new board. I also changed the closed back to a convertible open/closed--the open sounds better to me. I kept the original back and baffle board, for what it's worth (looking at ebay sales a tremolux goes for about the price of a new BJ--but my Tremolux sounds a whole lot better than my NOS BJ.) Sorry no pics, but it looks just like all the other ones.

:-( Still not a member of this club. Back in '99/2000 I had a very boring job and I spent a good deal of my time at work browsing the Internet. Back then you could get an early 60s Tremolux head+cab for just under $1000. That was too much money for me back then, but now these amps easily go for $2000+, which is too much money for me now. Really wish I'd just gone ahead and bought the blonde one I saw on eBay 10 or so years ago. :-(

The very first band I was in had a rhythm guitar player that had a Vox Tornado and a black Tremolux. This was back in 1065 or 66. We worked the dog doo out of that amp (It was the only one we had for quite a while). Two guitars and a microphone were pushed through that thing.

Talked to him last year and he still has them both.

My entry is an early '62 with blonde tolex and oxblood grill cloth that I obtained in 1963. It uses 6BQ5's and has only one 10" speaker with a tone ring. Yeah, that's one of the best memories I have of my old hometown (Ojai - now home to Robben Ford). Little record shop, on the main drag of a little hippie/artsy town, with 12" vinyl in the front, backroom full of old Fender, Ampeg and Silvertone amps, the odd Rhodes piano, and a gigantic Leslie cabinet. I remember asking the owner, "Hey, does that 4x10" speakers?" (I knew a little). "Nah, man, " he replied, "It's not a Bassman. Just a junky ol' 12."

It was the only place in town to buy guitar strings, too, at least back then. I wish the rest of the town was as cool as Blue Sky Records. That place is long gone now

Happy Tremors! Bet a rig like that is rare in the UK.

Seem to be, so I couldn't find an original cabinet. If only the head could talk the stories it might tell.

Greetings,

I picked up a late '62 Tremolux with 2x10 cab a couple of weeks ago. It had really crappy fabric store vinyl and nylon/polyester fabric grill cloth on it. Without taking it apart I could tell that the transformers were original so I figured I would restore it to its original glory.

When I opened it up the circuit had not been touched at all - except one of the previous owners had replaced the footswitch RCA jack with a 1/4" and then "rigged" a vintage 2 button footswitch to use with it (???). It had all RCA tubes including some 60's Black Plate 6L6GCs. The rectifier was replaced with a 5U4B - I assume to lower the voltages. All of the parts (caps, pots, transformers, etc.) with date codes dated to either the 45th or 46th week of 1962. The cab had the original Oxford 10K5s and they dated 45th week of 1962 as well.

The amp looks as though it had been painted black at some point and the grill cloth painted silver. Then at a later date, the tolex was painted white and the grill cloth painted brown. I can see both black and white spray paint on the insides of the head cabinet and the original wheat grill cloth was there on the head but heavily painted. Unfortunately, the tube chart was so totally painted over that I cannot read it at all. I'm pretty sure that the amp is either Nov or Dec 62 or possibly Jan 63.

So I am in the process of replacing the crappy white vinyl with rough blonde tolex. Technically, I should do the grill cloth with wheat but I actually like the look of Oxblood cloth better. I bought both but am doing the Oxblood first.

I finished up the head using all of the original hardware. I did a cap job and replaced the power cord with a grounded one. It sounds incredible through every cabinet I've plugged it into so far.

I've now just completed disassembly of the cabinet. It appears the someone at some point had cut two holes (ports?) in the baffle between the two speaker cutouts at the top and bottom. There is a 4 1/2" round hole at the top and a 3" x 3" square hole at the bottom. I don't think that these are original as they are done very poorly.

So at this point I'm trying to decide whether to make a new baffle from scratch or to try and plug up these holes. Plugging them up is going to be difficult to do and make it look good. I can make some MDF or particle board pieces and try to glue them in place with epoxy or something and then fill the cracks with putty and paint but I don't want them to loosen up and buzz. I haven't decided yet - I'd really like to keep the original baffle board if I can.

All in all it is a fun project and it is an amp that I've wanted to own for many many years now.

I will try and post up some pics when I get it finished.

Thanks,

Last night I made two plugs from a scrap of 1/2" MDF that I had laying around. I traced them out from the holes in the baffle and carefully cut them out with a jig saw. Then I slowly shaped them with a disc/belt sander and a round file until I could press them into the holes. It took some time but I managed to get them to fit with minimal space around them. I then glued them into place with yellow wood glue - filling in all of the cracks as best I could.

I let the glue dry overnight. This morning before work, I put on a slight bit of wood filler to even out the seams. Tonight I'm going to sand it smooth and paint the entire baffle assembly with flat black enamel. This repair is solid - there should not be any problems with it coming loose.

I also filled all of the extraneous holes in the cabinet with 3/16" dowels. There were dozens of extra holes in this cab from several sets of feet and casters to multiple installations of handles and tilt-back legs plus a few that seem random. Tonight I sand all of that down, re-countersink the corner holes, and it will be ready to cover.

Here is my late '61 Blonde gone Brown.
I could only afford the head so I had a custom cab built by Bob Fusco. It's kind a hybrid Tremolux/Vibrolux in this state. One Jensen P10R and one Weber signature 10" alnico sound really nice in there.

I was sold on it as soon as I plugged in. Dead quiet on idle, great clean sounds, not too loud so I can turn it up and let it break up a bit. Exactly what I'd been after for a while. I sold a 63 vibroverb to pay for it since that amp was nice, but noisy. I can't get over the tremolo on the tremolux. The best!

Is 600 for a 1965 Tremolux head in original condition a good deal?

Thanks guys!

My guess is that's about right, not a deal. Me, i'd hold out for a brownface blonde.

Play it, if possible. The answer will come to you. I think using your gut to make the decision is the best way. I got a '59 and I am in amp heaven for the type of music I play.

kd, your '59 and my '58 aren't even cousins to the blackface :)

So how does this sound as compared to a Super Reverb? I found a head lying in the music store I work in. Im debating buying it. Just wanted some advice.

Sounds very similar, but no reverb (and therefore slightly less gain) on the Vibrato channel. At 30 watts, it also breaks up a little sooner than my 40 watt silverface Super Reverb (blackfaced). I run it through the Tremolux SEALED 2x10 cab, so that makes it sound different too. Whatever you run the head into will greatly effect the sound you get.

All that said, the 65 Tremolux is my favorite amp in my collection and I also have a 66 Champ, a 70 Twin Reverb, a 72 Vibro Champ, a 73 Bassman 50, a 74 Super Reverb, and a 65 DRRI. They all sound different, while having that Fender clean spank. I would vote for buying it. It should be EASY to turn around if you decide you don't like it later.

Tough to choose from that collection! Nice blondes! And a Tweed Champ too? That is a Champ, right? Doesn't look big enough to be a Deluxe.

Yes a tweed champ. The black one is also a tweed circuit amp covered in stock black tolex. It's a stock early 64.

Joined this club a few months ago. Am I right in saying they originally came with a 210 cab? Am I missing anything by not using a 210. I have two 212 cabs and am always looking for an excuse to build another.

The original Tremolux (head -cab version) came with 1x10 cab briefly, then the 2x10 cab.

Nothing wrong with the 2x12 just sounds different. I'd go ahead and build a 2x10 if your handy at that sort of stuff. It would look better than the 2x12.
A lot easier to lug around too.

Here's mine. '66 I believe. I used a single 12 cabinet for a long time and recently built this Tremolux "copy" cab and put 2 12" Celestions in it. Still kicking butt after all these years.
I replaced the head grill cloth when I built the cabinet. It had the rectifier bypass done when I got it but is otherwise stock.

I never paid much attention to my 64--just played it. A couple of years ago I took off the back and found 2 12's in it--some brand I can't even find on the internet--escapes me. The center baffle was gone. I made a new front baffle (the 12's were playing through 10 inch holes in the original) and loaded a couple of Weber alnicos. I also replaced the back with a back that can be used open or closed--I prefer it open. The amp has a pretty percussive attack and can get harsh and icepicky if I'm not careful--the new speakers did help some.

Cool. Maybe you should see if some sweet RCA preamp tubes, perhaps a 5751 or 12AY7 in v1 (rather than a 12AX7) might smooth it out.

Another thing I've noticed is that when speakers are not at ear level, people tend to turn up the treble, which leads to icepick tones. I'm not suggesting putting your 2 x 12 at ear level, but a least to put your head down there and have a good listen to see if you haven't set the amp too bright.

Hello... all! Nice pix to you all!
I have a question as to the year of a 50's tweed Tremolux 1-12 combo. The tube chart near the speaker only says 5E9A and Production 21 JG.
Any Ideas???

Thanks

There should be 2 letters stamped in ink on the tube chart, ie FG, HB,etc

Post those letters and we can date it for you.

Guys can I get some advice please. I am looking at a 1958 tremolux rehoused in to a Howerton blond tolex with Wheat grill cloth cabinet. Apparently speaker circuit board etc are all original.

I have tried to research this fender amp and most seem to have many more knobs, Tone bass etc. The one I am looking at has 4 inputs, 2 x Inst 2 x Mic, a volume each a single tone and 2 tremolo controls only.

I can't really understand the difference, perhaps age (earlier model) etc.

It apparently has been checked over recently and is in good order.

Any thoughts? Suggestions, things to look out for and so on ?

It seems you tube demos of the early models are a bit rare, anyone have any links for me to get an idea of what to expect when it arrives?

Does anyone have a Hi Resolution photo of a Brown Face Tremolux 6G9/A/B just the faceplate so I can make a print of it. I am building an amp and I can't seem to find a good enough photo of one where I can print it out in photoshop. I can't pay $90.00 bucks for one on line. If anyone has one please email to mazzbob@gmail.com Any assistance is appreciated. Bob

Also, here is a shot of my 63 Tremolux. It's an amazing sounding amp and a great value in the vintage amp market.
