OM 21 June 26th, 2009, 12:06 PM I just realized that their was no G&L owners club, and I know their are others on here, so without further ado, welcome to the G&L Owners Clubs thread.
A couple of months ago I picked up my G&L ASAT Classic tribute series. Sweet guitar that now has me gassing for an American made G&L. And once my 000-18 sells, I am going to do just that. But for now, here's mine.

This was my 'gateway' Tele -- even though it's not technically a Tele I've purchased a '52 RI and an American Std. since. It's completely stock, and I really love the pickups. I'm thinking about replacing the pickguard with a black one though.
SouthpawGuy June 26th, 2009, 07:46 PM G&Ls are highly addictive. I bought my first in April '08.
I now have twelve  ( up until Monday it was eleven but I went and bought another, just could not resist)
Here's a couple of shots of some of them ...

Very handy that 'cos I'm left handed
Jackie Treehorn June 26th, 2009, 10:17 PM No pics, but i have a nice sunburst 96 Legacy. Mostly gets ignored while I play the Tele's.
SouthpawGuy, you need just "one" more. You are a club all by yourself!

Chuck F. June 27th, 2009, 01:17 AM Here's my USA made ASAT Classic.....I picked it up off craigslist 4 months ago for $650 with a HS case...dark pic but the only one I have so far....I simply cannot find a Fender that can compete with it overall...
Chuck F. June 27th, 2009, 01:20 AM Anyone own both USA and Tribute asats? Any thoughts on if there is that much difference? I've read Boris' well supported thoughts on how he feels the USA ones are far superior...and obviously I would expect the USA ones to be better overall....but are they THAT much better? ..Anyone have a different experience?
BTW...Kudos to the thread starter.......a G&L owners club thread was definitely needed!!
axmaker June 28th, 2009, 02:14 PM she don't look like much now, but she has it where it counts....

I'm not an ASAT (or any other G&L model) owner, but if you'll indulge me, I'd like to respond to your question, Chuck.
This time last year I was checking out G&Ls. I tried a couple of ASAT Classic Tributes and a USA. I don't claim to have the most skilled hands or the most sophisticated ear, but I remember taking note at the time that *for me* there was not enough difference between them in terms of playability and sound to be worth the extra money for an American made ASAT.
BTW, I didn't wind up going with G&L, but I liked them. They were just a little different than what I was looking for. The neck felt different; not bad, just different. And those MFD pups were sure hot, but again just different than what I was looking for.
Chris S. July 3rd, 2009, 04:12 AM G&Ls are highly addictive. I bought my first in April '08... I now have twelve ( up until Monday it was eleven but I went and bought another, just could not resist).
Hi, my name is Chris, and I'm a G&L addict. I've owned maybe twenty of the suckers over the last decade or so. Oh, and three of the basses. :-|
Eventually had to sell most of them, but they're great, great guitars. My current fave is an ASAT Z-3 Semi-Hollow with V-neck (littered with birdseyes) and an ebony board. It has the best neck of any guitar I've ever owned, period. And it works for any and every style of music. (Okay, maybe not Japanese shakuhachi -- but I bet you could fake it.) ;-) CS

asatfan July 3rd, 2009, 11:32 AM I've got two Asats, and a Broadcaster. I love all of them! Bought the first one in '89 after seeing (and hearing) John Jorgenson play one. I gotta take some pictures of all three of them...
Some beautiful guitars, you all! SouthpawGuy, I especially like your red burst with the maple fretboard. Now that's what I'm talking about! What do they call that color?

I bought that one used, like most of my G&Ls, it might have been a custom order ? It is a looker !
65flh5326 July 4th, 2009, 03:45 AM Toss me in the mix too. I bought this 87 Asat new. I did have to make a truss rod nut that did not protrude as the bullet one got in my way.
I have 3 electrics, Tele, Strat and the G&L. The G&L completes the Fender experience for me.
This one is light swamp ash, just the way I want it.

jaystrings July 4th, 2009, 07:57 AM I reckon I qualify as a G&L lover. After the collection grew somehow to over 60 G&Ls, I began thinning out duplicates. I had a habit of acquiring multiple copies with the intent of keeping only the best of that model, and that just got out of hand. Deciding WHICH '86 ASAT, WHICH Skyhawk, etc to keep just got maddening. It finally took losing track of what I actually did have to begin to thin the harem to a size that I could manage AND enjoy. In almost every case, I wound up keeping the one I had acquired originally. Somehow the bonding had more to do with sentimentality than any other factor. In the process, I developed a deep appreciation for guitars with a "worn in" look that I had not had when the process started. In fact, "pristeen", "mint", "as new" and all those descriptors became irrelevant.
It became more important for me to get anything leaving my harem into a harem I felt good about. So, some sanity is being restored in my household, even though GAS attacks are as sudden and as severe as ever when they happen. And mama is more content.
My fave BBE model? The Bluesboy. Such a simple, sweet guitar. My $0.02 is that any collection of 3 or more guitars should contain a Bluesboy. That thing just does it all. My fave Leo-era model? I go back and forth between the early S-500 and Skyhawk, usually whichever one I'm playing at the time. They both are tone monsters! And the purtiest G&L harem member is my 2008 Legacy in Spalted maple.
Yep, I luv 'em. Since my first guitar back in 1963, I've owned about 200 guitars and still have about 50. Best guitar for the money by far.
asatfan July 4th, 2009, 12:13 PM Jay, that's quite a collection....if you ever need someone to keep track of any of those 50, I'm sure we could help you out! Seriously though, a few pics of the special ones would be nice!
Rick W July 4th, 2009, 04:53 PM Here's my Boradcaster. G&L made two them. I used to own them both but sold the one with the maple board. At one time I had 19 lefty Leo era G&Ls.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o188/rande_w/Broadcaster/BCfullfront.jpg
This is my son's 80's Asat (after market guard). The Leo era sparkle ones are really rare and look much better (IMHO) than the newer ones with the large flakes.

emiller45 July 10th, 2009, 06:23 PM I have a G&L Legacy I bought about 1994. It is a NICE guitar.
nickrom July 10th, 2009, 08:50 PM I have a ASAT Classic Tribute - sunburst semi hollow body, maple neck - that I run straight into a Vox AC30CC1 with a Weber Blue Dog speaker. These two were made for each other like chocolate and peanut butter. Its a helluva setup for under $1K!
I have owned a bunch of guitars and amps over the years and with this setup, I seem to have my GAS satisfied. I try other things - but when it comes to decision time, I end up thinking "what am i getting that i dont have now?"
A while back I owned a US made ASAT - and the quality was excellent. The only thing that has been a compromise so far is the pickguard - I have to send it to Chandler for reproduction. I can't use a standard off the shelf replacement. (no big deal in my book) Other than that she stands up to anything in terms of quality.
I want to change the bridge to a three saddle bridge and I don't know if that will be an easy replacement or not - measurements wise. Anyone done that yet? I currently have the six saddle brass version.

I believe it's a direct swap.

Just curious, why do you want the three saddle over the six?
resonator July 10th, 2009, 11:37 PM I bought a USA ASAT Classic in Honey finish with a Birds Eye Maple gun oil gloss neck recenty from graigslist. My Fender American Deluxe is headed to the classifieds. I didn't think I'd like a 7.5 radius fretboard, but I love it.
So what's the next logical choice for my second G&L? I'm leaning toward a ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi. What do ya think?
nickrom July 12th, 2009, 05:54 PM Just curious, why do you want the three saddle over the six?
the body on this guitar is very acoustic and toneful. I want to see if i can take it even a little further with the resonance and sustain that a three saddle brings. It would be a Callaham or Glendale.
jim_pridx July 12th, 2009, 07:59 PM So what's the next logical choice for my second G&L? I'm leaning toward a ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi. What do ya think?
This is a Bluesboy semi-hollow (no f-hole) with a Duncan Seth Lover in the neck and a DiMarzio Virtual Hot T in the bridge. It's sounds really nice if you're looking for something a little mellower than a solidbody Bluesboy, but it's very versatile. Plus, it's super light in weight.

OM 21 August 15th, 2009, 10:43 AM Well, as I mentioned in my initial post on this thread, I have been looking at a sweet US G&L ASAT Classic Custom in baby Blue. Finally made it happen yesterday. There is more pics I just posted over on the main forum, but wanted to add one here as well.

robinje August 15th, 2009, 08:46 PM I just orderd today (from Buffalo Bros.) a new ASAT Bluesboy semi-hollow with f-hole in basic 'premium honey" finish with a rosewood neck, gun oil gloss neck finish, white pearloid pickguard, and upgraded tolex case. I think this wll be a nice alternative to the 'standard' Tele configuration that I own (it's a Ron Kirn custom job). I'll try to remember to post pics here when it arrives, but Buffalo Bros says 90-120 days...

What a great looking guitar!!! Nice and basic without any flame top, burst finish, or any other distractions. I like your G&L in this 'vintage' configuration so much that I ordered a new one today much like yours... ASAT Bluesboy in ash with f-hole, honey finish, rosewood fretboard, gun oil neck finish, and upgraded tolex case. YAY! Now, the wait begins...

truckerrik September 10th, 2009, 09:39 PM In 95 I went into my local G&L dealer looking for a Legacy. He set me up and I went through the dozen or so he had on hand without finding THAT tone. After trying to explain what I was looking for he came back with this gaudy looking thing. He said it was the guitar that the staff used when they wanted to sell amps so I gave it a try. I went home with it. That was the beginning of Tele love.

I can't believe you didn't get lots of comments on this beauty, OM!
Buffalo Brothers had a new one like this a few months ago; almost had to go to California to give it a try.
Fantastic combination of colors.
OM 21 September 11th, 2009, 10:26 AM Thanks BB. It was the one at Buffalo Brothers that I originally intended to buy, but they sold it before I had a chance to raise funds. Luckily, I found this one online at American Guitar Bourique and was able to sell off the 000-18 in time to get it. Having owned it for about a month now, I think my other electric could well end up on the chopping block soon, as this guitar covers it all for my needs. And hell ya, she sure is a looker.
jim_pridx September 11th, 2009, 10:58 AM Ah hah! Now that you mention American Guitar Boutique, I recall that you also posted this guitar on G&LDP, correct? Very nice guitar indeed!

jim_pridx October 2nd, 2009, 06:46 PM For those who might be interested, there's a new G&L discussion forum happening. It's called the "G&L Roundtable." Of course, it's still in its infancy state, but it looks to be off to a great start. The site can be found by clicking the following link:

Hope to see ya there!

Greg, I don't know what to say! Gorgeous collection indeed! Always has been, and your insight on G&L guitars is untouchable! It's good to see you here!
Jim
boris bubbanov October 5th, 2009, 02:12 PM That's a magical collection there, Greg!
Yow!
And I keep thinking, my 5 G + Ls is enough. Ha.
GGJaguar October 6th, 2009, 01:09 PM That's a magical collection there, Greg!
I'd more accurately call it a "research collection" as I work on the G&L book. Some have already been released back into the wild and more will follow once the book is done... but that won't be for a while.
GG

boris bubbanov October 11th, 2009, 04:17 AM Buffalo Brothers (just North of San Diego in Carlsbad) has just found itself in possession of over 100 G + L guitars and basses, apparently from 3 different sources up in the Northwest where the economy is goin' bad.
This sounds like new stock off the hooks, and also some rentals. I believe this stuff is really nice, and totally undercuts all their existing G + L stock, new and used. I see no reason why the vast majority of these guitars would not include the original COA and case (or gigbag). They've got some of it entered onto the webpage but this might be 30-40 guitars and basses, not 100, so there's more coming.
I don't know who the "bank" is and I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm guessing these prices, as low as they are, are negotiable.
So, cash in that CD, get in the van and drive for California. These are some remarkable deals, even at the prices they are posting at. How are they gonna keep track of all the guitars and all the excited buyers? If they sold 25 in one day, could they ship them all that day? Maybe they won't wanna haggle, since the excitement level will already be too high.
Wow!
http://www.buffalobrosguitars.com/gAndL.html
boris bubbanov October 11th, 2009, 11:55 AM It has occurred to me, that some of the stock they got will be Tributes; but it generally looks like they've added ASATs and SC-2s to the page and haven't really gotten to the others.
Been considering the "down side" of these so called "used" guitars. I don't think G + L is gonna ignore you if you have an issue, like Rickenbacker might do, I don't think the vast majority of these ever left the shops they were sent to, nor are they placed in the GbL Registry. This is so close to just buying a new one off the rack, except you're paying a low enough price you can sell it with little financial hit. I would say no hit, but I'm squeamish about guitar prices right now. I think they're going down more.
BTW, BB has Twenty-Five USA G + L guitars to choose from which are all under $ 1,000.00 and other half dozen at $ 1,000-1,050.00. Amazing.

$ 750, but a gigbag, not a case.

Singin' Dave October 13th, 2009, 02:30 PM I really love this guitar and i am amazed everytime i play it that it is an import model. It even has a birdseye fretboard.
My next one will be an ASAT Special.
That looks EXACTLY like mine! Yours is an '05 Korean I bet....

boris bubbanov October 15th, 2009, 02:36 PM The one guitar I know of that Buffalo Brothers sold, the Emerald Blue one, is off the page.
Could this mean that all these others are still available, and more?
Wow. Times are tight.
EDIT: But wait. Look at this!

SouthpawGuy October 15th, 2009, 09:11 PM For what it's worth as of three or four days ago BB also have a lefty Legacy in tobacco burst, rosewood board with satin birds eye maple neck and tortoise guard. The price is very good also.
wolfman63 October 16th, 2009, 12:12 AM My favorite Tele is my right handed ASAT butterscotch, with maple, left handed three bolt, "deep V" ,George Fullerton neck. It is an absolute dream to play, and has that vintage Tele sound. I bought it new about fourteen years ago.

wolfman63 October 16th, 2009, 10:36 AM Sorry, none at this time. As I said in another forum somewhere, I'm a computer/digital camera ignoramous. Soon as I figure out all this stuff I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the interrest.
jazzrat October 16th, 2009, 04:22 PM Gotta love 'em.
This Legacy is my only G & L but it whets my appetite for more as it's the equal or better
of any strat I've had including EJ's and Custom Shop.
'06 with the nice beefy Bi-cut neck.

I love that color and the birdseye fretboard peeking out there looks pretty amazing too.
G&L makes some wonderfully nice guitars in all price ranges IMO.
tonyw October 18th, 2009, 05:52 AM Hi Guys
first post here, this is a pic of my 96 ASAT Special called "The Beasty. I have had this guitar since new and its had a heap of playing.

pyrrhocorax October 18th, 2009, 09:17 AM Hi guys
Just joined the G&L 'club' :)
Always fancied an ASAT, and an 'unmissable' guitar came up on eBay, an ash bodied, maple boarded 1989 guitar in near mint condition in original case with manual, only one small lacquer ding and near zero fret wear to show for 20 years of life :)
Set her up and she plays amazingly with a slinky action, cuts through beautifully and the chords just kind of fall under my fingers :)
The MFD pickups are an interesting sound, very clear and articulate, she makes a nice pairing with my natural ash, lace sensor equipped Buddy Guy Strat.
Can't understand why the string winding posts taper the wrong way though - that's a weird one !
Pics of my new best friend follow ... :)
boris bubbanov October 21st, 2009, 01:31 PM Still watching this Buffalo Brothers page.
Based on what I can see, 2 ASATs have been sold and one JB-2 bass (previous stock, I think).
This bulk buy of guitars has cause one or more things, perhaps.
A number of buyers are selecting guitars and basses that never made it to the page;
Other buyers and sellers elsewhere have been forced into action by the availability of a nice sized inventory of basically new guitars at just a bit more money.
I could have 20 G + L guitars at this point, but before that happened I discovered what fun it is to assemble a "Fender" specifications guitar. I can't make a "G + L" guitar.

Tim from Buffalo Brothers had about two dozen of those G&Ls at the Arlington guitar show last Saturday, and two of them that I had my eyes on were sold before I had the gumption to pull the trigger on them. Dang! Anyway, every one I saw was in mint condition with no scratches or dings of any kind. In addition, the prices typically ranged from about $750 to $1000 for Legacys, ASAT Classics, Classic S, and so on. I'm sure there are still some great deals to be had.
jim_pridx October 21st, 2009, 02:36 PM To tonyw & pyrrhocorax.....those are some great looking ASATs. Welcome to the world of G&L guitars!
jim_pridx October 21st, 2009, 02:42 PM Boris, I just checked the links you posted earlier. I believe this is one of the guitars I let slip away from me last Saturday. If not, it was one that was nearly identical.
http://www.buffalobrosguitars.com/images30000-30999/ugc30770-g&lasats/index.html
I was at the BB booth waiting patiently for a guy to put it back on the guitar stand, but he bought it right then and there. Oh well.

Thanks for the welcome Jim
I nearly just bought an ASAT special body with a B bender fitted out but i missed it by $3.50 on the Bay.
Like Boris i too assemble some of my guitars, i have some pics of my latest 2 over on the strat forum.
cheers

Those "S" model ASATs seem to be a favorite. Three have sold off the BB site so far; none left showing. That one, an Emerald Blue (teal) one, and a Vintage Yellow (slightly yellow Natural finish) one also with pearloid pickguard.
They finally sold one of the 4 ASAT Classics with the Butterscotch finish and the gun oil tint neck. Those look real tempting, also.
CodeBlue October 31st, 2009, 10:11 AM I just picked up a Bluesboy last night - Black w/ tortoise shell pickguard.
It's the 3rd G&L I have owned and it's just a magical piece. The other two went in trades but I'm not gonna make that mistake again!

Sorry Amigo, I have no camera - that's why I included the description!
bfgz November 1st, 2009, 12:41 AM I thought i better post my latest G&L. I have never been much for black guitars in the past, I tended to like the translucent type finishes but i really do like the look of these with the black pearloid pickguard.
This model with the black finish is a Basswood body and the top tone pot is a push-pull to split the humbucker and the bottom tone is the G&L PTB pot. The single coil pickups are Alnico V and the humbucker is an Alnico as well.
This guitar has a very pleasing and distinct voice.
I am still always amazed too at the quality and playability of the Tribute Series instruments. Even the Rosewood Fret boards they use on these guitars are impressive for the money.
Keep up the good work G&L
