I would like to know, from anyone who has experienced Twang King pickups as well as either Don Mare Hayrides or super sports, what the tonal qualities and differences are for each. I am building this tele for true country twang. I am really looking for that Albert Lee sound (I realize he no longer plays a tele, but as my guitar is a traditional tele, I need a traditional tele setup). I currently have Lawrence L-250 pickups, and while they are really nice pickups, they are too rock oriented, and don't have that low-end pop and snap that I like. In 2006, Albert Lee recorded a song called Payola Blues. If I can get close to that tone, I would be ecstatic. Thanks.

I'd like to give you a comparison, but have only played the Twang Kings. Have a neck and bridge set in a '69 RI Thinline Telecaster. Great sound so far and I lean more towards vintage Haggard, Cash, Strait and Travis. I am thnking about putting them in a new build, an American Standard alder solid body. I'd like to hear from others who've used Mare's or Fralin's pickups too.

Thanks Dropcheck, but it doesn't look like I'm getting anywhere with this thread. I think I need to try a new approach.

I had the Twang King neck pickup in one Tele (swapped out for a Duncan Seth Lover) and have a set of Hayrides in another Tele. The Twang King neck was very bright and snappy, and is a great pickup for the money. But the Hayride is much better, imho. It's warmer, richer and woodier, but still snappy. Of course, it's also almost twice the price.
