eddiewagner June 16th, 2009, 03:31 PM i am the proud owner of a silverface pro reverb amplification device. itīs a fantastic piece of equipment. i got it from a retired musician, who had it sitting in the cellar for 15 years. it needed new tubes and a set of good speakers after a while. itīs a beautiful amp and it looks great on every stage, specially with the chromed tilt-legs. i roughen up the sound with a sparkle drive and all is good. sometimes a little delay and some tremolo. it is a mighty soundmachine!
eddiewagner June 22nd, 2009, 04:26 AM itīs hard to be all alone.....
guess i have to join the princetonians.
SnidelyWhiplash June 22nd, 2009, 02:14 PM I have been lusting after a blackface Pro Reverb for at least a year. Funny
thing is,when i was growing up;you never heard anything about PR's. It
was all Deluxes,Vibroluxes & Twins.
OaklandA June 22nd, 2009, 08:22 PM I was a proud past member.....hope to re-join again someday.
Tremendous amp.
rangercaster June 22nd, 2009, 08:26 PM nice score eddie !!! it looks to be in excellent shape ... could you post us a vid or some soundclips ???
ravindave_3600 June 24th, 2009, 05:35 PM Mine's a 65, original except for standard upkeep and a purple jewel. In 1985 I went into a good shop with all the money I had, played everything, and came out with the amp and a smile (and a few dollars left over!).

Redryder45 June 28th, 2009, 04:41 PM I had a 72' Pro Reverb I bought used in about 1976. It was my first big amp and it really had the surf sound. A great amp that I sadly let get away years ago. I found a Super Reverb and a Twin, but never another Pro.
eddiewagner July 2nd, 2009, 04:59 AM could you post us a vid or some soundclips ???
here is a video where i demo a pedal. maybe that gives you an idea.

Robin Nahum July 2nd, 2009, 05:43 AM Looks just like my 74. Master volume pull boost?
Wild Rice Chris July 2nd, 2009, 06:23 AM eddiewagner, I like yours. Much brighter than mine. Original speakers?
Here are some vids of mine:

It's in a pine cabinet with a single Eminence Big Ben 15" speaker. The output transformer has been replaced with one from a 90's Fender Prosonic, which is a little bit beefier and has multiple impedances to match the 8 ohm speaker. The master volume was removed when it went to a black faceplate, the amp is a '74 silverface.
I have a partscaster of an amp!
stax July 2nd, 2009, 09:06 AM My silver face pro needed a new eyelet board as the original had taken on moisture and had a problem with crackling sounds, sounded like a dodgy pot but according to a well respected amp tech it apparently was dc leakage which was only gonna get worse.
Replaced main board with a loaded Hoffman turret board and everything was fine.
The only problem was it was so loud and very toppy with the new Eminence legend speakers I installed at the same time, couldnt get it past 3 max even playing with drums.
Put a couple of Greenbacks in this week, which are normally thought of as being best in closed back but they sound wonderful, I can now crank the amp a bit and the ice-picks gone.

eddiewagner July 3rd, 2009, 03:51 AM since mine has a pair of weber alnico signature speakers it is much more civilized. eddie
Johnny Isaacs July 3rd, 2009, 11:27 AM Here's my '73 Pro Reverb. I love it. It's all stock, minus a cap job and some general up keep.

teleman55 July 4th, 2009, 02:18 AM Gotta join this club!
Took mine out to play a bar the other night. I've been using a Deluxe Reverb mostly the past two years. Use the Pro for outdoor gigs and such. Used it in a bar the other night with a bit more judicious use of pedals and people were marvelling at it's sound.
It's a 1970. Say what you want about the Oxfords but I like 'em, but I got Eminence legend 1228Ks in it now.
JJ Ecc83s sound bland in my DR, it wants NOS, but these and the Eminence alnicos make this amp sing.
blue metalflake July 13th, 2009, 05:36 PM I've a '75 Pro S'face which got a new set of tubes (valves to me) maybe 6 or 7 years back. Apart from that its the way it came, and still a great amp.
cowboytwang August 11th, 2009, 03:12 AM I have about 24 old tube amps, mostly Fender's from '49 to '72, and the '66 Pro gets used more than any of them. If I had to guess probably about 80% of the gigs I do is with that amp.

Sargeslide August 21st, 2009, 11:29 AM I'll have to get picks for ya'll! I have a 66, I found it on the side of the road in the trash! SOmeone had cut the cab down to make it a head, messed with the innards, and generally trashed it. I took it home, cleaned it up, put tubes in it and fired it up. Sounds great! I had a blonde cab built and I put a Reverend 10 and FMI 12 in it that I had laying around. I had a buddy fix the innards, plays great, but going in for a cap job this week, guess it's age and the hell it's been thru have caught up with her. I have not gigged her, I should though, it's my fav amp.

That's a sad, sad story with a happy ending.
GuitarJonz August 21st, 2009, 06:03 PM I've never owned one, but would like to. They were kind of a sleeper amp for a long time, with most guys preferring Twins, SR's and DR's. They got a bad rap as small-tranny amps by some, but the ones I've heard sounded great. Someday..!
svasqu01 August 23rd, 2009, 12:36 PM The Pro Reverb is an awesome amp, has that lush Fender reverb that will take you from mild to you better call Dick Dale and throw your board into the Woody. I have two of these fine amps a '69 Silverface 40 watter and a '78 Master Volume Ultralinear 70 watter. Now, although you can't "Blackface" the Ultralinear, the boys out at Torres Engineering did some fantastic mods to it, that'll make you think it's a Blackface, and they actually made the master volume usable, because in stock form pulled out and all the way up, they are way fuzzy and they still bleed some signal to ground. I blend mine with an '82 Rivera Fender Concert 4x10, because I need the Vibrato the Pro has. Torres also did a fine job on my Concert. Both amps are refitted with Weber Silver Bells.

captain gorgeous September 2nd, 2009, 08:35 AM i had one of these for a couple of years eddie.
to be honest it was a bit of a pup, endless tinkering required to get it running properly (someone had upset by running it with the wrong tubes) and it was forever developing gig-endagering issues. spend a fortune on getting it running right then my band broke up and i sold it.
when it worked it sounded wonderful though. perfect power for medium sized gigs and yeah great reverb.
bit on the big/heavy side for 40w though i thought. my next gigging amp will be a step down in size i think.
cool amps.

Sorry you got one that had been abused - sounds like more work than fun. Heavy? True. I bought a small hand truck just to make it a little easier on the ol' back.
Love your sig: "What is it with chimpanzees and that middle parting? It's so 1920s."
dead mike September 14th, 2009, 04:37 PM i have a 69 drip edge that has the BF circuit, mercury mag tranny, and legend speakers. this is the best amp i own, its a killer amp that covers alot of ground.
stagefright September 22nd, 2009, 02:45 AM Just recently picked up a roadworn 1970 and it sounds great except for that frying bacon background noise. Maybe that's what yours was sounding like Stax? I figured it needs caps but maybe something else. A bit on the heavy side for me but the sound....oh, the sound. In for check-up/tune-up soon.

My first guess for the frying bacon sounds is the plate load resistors. Just get a bunch of carbon comp 100k resistors and swap all the plate load resistors in the amp.

Hell YES!
dever September 23rd, 2009, 04:06 AM Hey count me in! I picked up a 76 master volume model back in March. Mine was right before the Ultralinear change.
My tremolo is very anemic though, so I may open it up soon and check the caps. Other than that I'm lovin it.
goinpostal November 15th, 2009, 01:25 PM I've got a 1968 SFPR that I had given to me July '07 when my mom's neighbor passed away. His daughter gave it to me. It's all original down to the two prong power cord. The amp tech that serviced her said everything is all original and even the caps aren't leaking. Ahhhh...40 watts of sweet tube tone.
ravindave_3600 November 15th, 2009, 01:39 PM goinpostal, that's a great gift. I'm sure you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Mind telling us the rest of the story, like why you were chosen for this inheritance?
goinpostal November 15th, 2009, 08:47 PM Years ago Bill found out I played so we would get together every once in a while. All of his guitars went to his brother (who doesn't play but wanted them) and being friends with the deceased owner and his family she was just being generous and offered it to me. I did have to spend $120 to get it checked out (resolder some connections, tighten up the tube sockets, clean up the cord input jacks, check the bias, and some other minor things[none of the caps leak and all of the tubes work fine]) and she sounds great. I am looking for another amp to play on a regular basis. Way too many great amps to pick from and not enough money.
