eggman June 14th, 2009, 02:02 AM Howdy,
Bought my first Z recently, a Carmen Ghia head. I ordered with a matching 1-12 Z cab in blonde. Recently I retro-fitted it with a Weber AlNiCo Silver Bell (Pre-Rola treatment). Sounds fantastic. Great for slightly overdriven "Keef" type tones and nails "Day Tripper" at low volume with my ES-335.
Tell us all about your Z amp.

DickensCPA June 14th, 2009, 07:24 PM Loves me Z's. Went thru about 11 amps in roughly a year before settling on an RXES and Carmen Ghia heads. Have my second Z 112 cab arriving this Tuesday for proper stereo.
I really love the OD from a Route 66 pedal but really only find myself using the the compression side in very modest doses and a smidge of delay for certain songs. I pretty much set the CG for grit and use the RXES for beautiful cleans and A/B them, a tad of stereo action here and there for original stuff.
We're headlining an outdoor show in July, can't wait. Obviously not Woodstock but can't wait to let the Z's breathe. It's a big deal to us.
DavyA June 14th, 2009, 10:06 PM I've owned 2 Z's and liked both of them. I had a RT66 which was a greta blues amp!! The only thing is that it was too loud for most of the rooms I was playing. So I sold it and got a Z28 head and while it was a really nice tight sound I think the 6v6 thing is just not quite what I want either. I'm playing in a 7 piece Country band so I need more of a "bigger sound" with out hurting everyones ears.
I'm currently having an amp custom made made by RusTech amps that will do what I want. I think that if I can afford it in the future I would get a Charmin Gia for my Blues and more drivin' sounds. I really like the doc's designs and of coarse his customer service is second to none!
Have Fun!
JumpMarine June 14th, 2009, 10:29 PM I'm still loving my Prescription Jr and Z 2x10 cab after a year. It has, hands down, the best master volume on any amp. Beautiful cleans and can get nice and raunchy. Takes my pedals beautifully too. On another note, my buddy just got an EZG and that is a MONSTER amp. It's huge sounding and has a beautiful/lush reverb. This amp takes pedals like no other I've played.
SteveY June 14th, 2009, 10:57 PM Had a Studio 38 that was terrific sounding, but just a bit bigger than I wanted to schlep (hey, I'm an old geezer).
Joisey June 14th, 2009, 11:20 PM I got my first Z a couple weeks ago. I decided on a Remedy and man what an amp. It only comes in a head and I also got a 1x12 convertible Z cab. The damn thing sounds huge. The amp has a nice half power switch (20w/40w). I have not yet run it at 40 watts:shock:. After the first week I bucked up for an Airbrake. It is an ear saver. Very impressed with it. The "bedroom" setting is surprisingly great. Not fizzy and the dynamics of the amp are not squashed beyond pleasing. The Airbrake is also tunable in that there are sliders that you can adjust to taylor the amount of attenuation when you click through positions. My amp arsenal is complete.
DickensCPA June 15th, 2009, 08:55 AM I'm still loving my Prescription Jr and Z 2x10 cab after a year. It has, hands down, the best master volume on any amp. +1 Never had an amp take to pedals like the Z's. An attenuator doesn't seem to destroy the sound like it does on others either.
Mark N June 17th, 2009, 11:43 AM I have the Maz 18 NR 112 combo...I absolutely love this amp!!! I tried one out a few weeks before getting mine, found a new one in the store and just had to plug into it. I had been reading lots about them prior to even trying one and had severe GAS for one of these, upon the first strum I said "ahhhh this is it!!!!" I couldn't get the smile off my face. I sold my TRRI and my Esquire to fund it but I picked up a good used NR combo in great shape (except for the scuff on the "Z"). It goes so well with my tele and I run a couple of pedals in front for drive...the amp drives nice on its own but for 18 watts it is killer loud!! Most of the rooms we play are small so I use the amp to set my base tone and then when I need OD or distortion I kick in the modded BD2 or my MXR distortion plus. I also use a delay for a bit of echo (just a trickle). This is by far the best amp I have ever owned hands down...

Joisey June 17th, 2009, 11:48 AM Black and Tan! Love that scheme.

woodman June 17th, 2009, 01:01 PM i had a Prescription for several years — best sounding amp i ever played — but sadly, by the time i got it up to the sweet spot, it was too dang loud for almost every gig i played. with regret, i sold it and replaced it with a 5E3, but i'll never forget how good that thing sounded when i got it up to about 5. so although i can't be a card-carrying member of the club, maybe i could be a member emeritus!
eggman June 17th, 2009, 04:30 PM Howdy,
It sounds like you have acquired an appreciation for Dr. Z, Woodman; that's good enough for me. :)
A 5E3? I considered one before settling on Dr. Z's 18 watt Carmen Ghia. I admit I've never even seen a 5E3 before, but played a used Ghia once and was hooked! Try a Carmen Ghia sometime; I won't part with mine.

NewGuy410 June 17th, 2009, 05:01 PM I've got a Carmen Ghia 1 x 12" combo.

I love my Z.

Steve Z June 19th, 2009, 10:38 PM I finally bought my first Dr Z a couple months ago (used amp but you would never know it as it is flawless) and really enjoy playing the amp. I only play at home for enjoyment so the outstanding master volume on the RxJr is a great bonus to fantastic tone.
The blonde with black front panel is very classy indeed. 2-12 cabinet has Celestion Alnico Blues.
JumpMarine June 21st, 2009, 11:37 AM My buddy jumped in with both feet in just a month with both an EZG and Remedy. I think that I created a monster!
brittwin June 23rd, 2009, 12:57 PM Bought a Mini Z head earlier in the year , but sold it quickly after it lacked any type of cleans. I bought a Z-28 head and never looked back. Lots of clean headroom and starts to breakup nicely as you tweak the treble and bass knobs. I run it through a Mojotone 2x12 cab with a Celestion Blue and a Hellatone 60.... man, do those speakers sound great together...
LDRogerson June 25th, 2009, 07:34 AM Chalk me up for a 2 x 12 Maz 38 Sr w/ Reverb. SWEET lil
eggman June 26th, 2009, 12:58 PM Howdy,
Brittwin: You make the Z28 sound like a ton of fun! The fact that it runs on 6V6s alone makes it special. Keep us informed about your Z28.

JosephB June 27th, 2009, 02:45 PM i LOVE the z's...my friend...not so much. his carmen ghia has been at my house for three or four months (he has a bad cat that he loves). i run it thru two 1x12's, one with a celestion greenback and one with a vintage 30...WOW! recorded an album with it, and use it on the road...here it is in the background stacked on the red avatar cab...
DickensCPA June 27th, 2009, 10:43 PM you win.
haha
'Preciate the love. I noticed from your pic above you have a CV. Did you do the white pickguard or is it a different model? In my pic, the Tele on the right is a CV also. The one on the left (black) is an MIM. That stock bridge pup on the CV thru a Carmen Ghia is so beautiful.
The bigger 1X12 cab is a convertable and it has an 8 ohm G12H30 in it. The smaller 1X12 cab on bottom has a 16 ohm G12H30 in it. What speaker you running your Ghia on?
ETA: Get a Brake Lite, set your volume and tone both between 1 and 2 o'clock and adjust the Brake Lite to the room. No pedals needed.
Wild Rice Chris June 29th, 2009, 05:54 PM I have a 6545 that I've never really bonded with. Also have an Air Brake and used to have an old-style 1x12" Z cab.

Its a store bought amp stand. I took the plastic end caps out of the top and bought a couple of black steel shelve brackets from home depot. I stuck them in the end of the square steel tubes and used black duc tape to hold them in. The Stangray head goes on the first shelf where a small combo is meant to go. On the home made shelf I put the Z verb. The cabinet leans against the bottom slightly pointing up and I hold it there with a short bunji cord clipped to the handle and anchored to the stand. It works perfectly for gigging.
The drummer in my band is a welder and I'm going to get him to weld a proper second shelf so I don't have to use those brackets from home depot.
Tidepoolbay June 30th, 2009, 12:28 PM I traded a guitar for a Carmen Ghia head.
It's a great little amp!
Ignatius June 30th, 2009, 10:39 PM Count me in too - Stang Ray head with either a 2x12 or a 1x12 cab depending on the gig. My 1x12 has a Celestion Gold in it and it makes for a great sounding rig.
(not a great pic but you can see it back there with an Air Brake on top)

R.B. Huckleberry July 17th, 2009, 02:06 AM I was ampless for a year, really really taking my time and sparing no expense. I wanted the perfect amp (for me).
After trying and returning amps, repeat trips to stores for hours of jamming through other amps...I ordered a MAZ 18 Jr. NR from an out of atate dealer with a good rep & a return policy.
best move I ever made. Paired with a Celestion Vintage 30 loaded Lopoline open back 1x12 cabinet, this amp jangles, crunches and screams. It loves pedals, it loves not having pedals...it's just the ultimate amp.
samuelson July 18th, 2009, 08:35 PM I have a Maz 38 with reverb and put an celestion alinco gold in and it made a wonderful amp even better. way loud though. but nothing a badcat leash can't fix.

LOL. First thing I said after plugging in the first time was "next purchase: Dr. Z Airbrake attenuator!"
mannyg August 5th, 2009, 09:36 PM I bought a Prescription Jr. About a year ago. My decision was mostly based on all the Paisley Hype. There is no doubt the Z is an excellent quality amp but it certainly is it's own animal. Maybe a Stangray might be the ticket. I purchased a Princeton Reverb about 4 months ago and I haven't turned on the Z since. I'm thinking I might be a Fender Man.
The Z might be on the chopping block soon, it's in pristine condition.
Jackie Treehorn August 9th, 2009, 01:27 PM Going on close to 10 years now with the Carmen Ghia. It is the 2x10 combo.
Sold the Maz JR a while back. Both are quality amps. Did I mention they are a loud 18 watts.
414driver August 12th, 2009, 06:41 PM Here's a recent Carmen Ghia discovery! We were playing around with some acoustic amps....a California Blonde and a Peavey. Just for grins I plugged into the CG....volume at 9 am...tone at 3pm.......wow. Unbelievable. Check it out!!
Teleman August 15th, 2009, 09:41 AM Did my first gig last night with my new MAZ 38 SR NR and 2-10 Z Best cab. This thing is killer! I bought the 38 because I needed a litle more than I was getting from the MAZ 18 but this my be too much. I can see an Airbrake in my future.

For what you get they are very reasonably priced in my opinion. They won't cost what a Matchless cost.
Teleman August 16th, 2009, 08:38 PM There are a number of dealers that carry them both in house and on line. I've had great dealings with the following:
Willcutt Guitars - Lexington KY
Fat Sound Guitars - Cary, NC
Black Creek Guitars - New Paltz, NY

ch1naski September 1st, 2009, 11:07 PM I love this thing. As close to a perfect amp as I've ever come. Loves my PRS Dragons, and that's saying a lot, cuz those pickups are pretty "neutral" sounding. This amp makes them scream and snap. The half-pint reverb tank... well, I aint floored by it. But, as a great tele player once said... "Turn it up loud enough, and it dont NEED reverb."

Guitharley October 21st, 2009, 07:22 PM Hey All
keep going back to the Dr z site and fantasizing-actually made a call to a music store to inquire--my question -between the maz 18 and the Z28--are there great differences in sound-Im kinda getting the impression the jr =vox where the 28 maybe= fender??
is the 22 watts of the Z28 uber loud compared to 18 of Jr-on the Dr z soundclips I seem to like the z28 but they are 2 very different types of clips--am I just rambling on now.. maybe
Thanks if this makes any sense and you can help
cheers
drummerdarko October 25th, 2009, 10:45 PM that's a fair description, although a MAZ doesn't really sound like a vox and a Z28 doesn't really sound like a fender. Z's just have their own feel, their own sound. The Z28 does get really loud, but it gets dirty at a very usable volume. You don't have to crank it to get a very smooth growl. If I had 1400 right now, I'd buy a 4x10 Z28 combo right now.
Big Al Z November 8th, 2009, 08:29 PM Maz 38, Z-28 and a Z Best 2x12 cab. Don't use the 38 or Z best much unless I'm playing outside. Got a 2x10 cab I use with the Z-28. Very versatile amp - all depending on where those "tone" control knobs are set.

Gilamnstr December 12th, 2009, 05:25 PM Add me to the list - red Maz Jr. NR head with a Z 2-10 convertible cab, and an Airbrake to help tame it. I've got a DRRI that rarely even gets turned on since I bought the 'Z.

Loyd89: I'd try experimenting with different tubes-and guitars. My ES-335 overdrives my Ghia pretty early. My Rickenbacker 360 and Teles have considerably more clean headroom.
Consider going to the Dr. Z forum. You can find the link at thier website. They have a section called "Ask the experts" for more detailed suggestions for your, ahem..problem. Enjoy your Ghia!

How did you get the MAZ 18 Junior NR in a combo version? I can't seem to find that. I only see the head version

I really like the color of that one. I've never heard a Dr. Z what kinds of tones do you get out of them? More of a marshall or fender kind of tone?

Once you plug into one you will see...there are several models of em...mine for instance is the Maz Jr, 18 watts of pure tone heaven, it can go from clean to mean and is very versatile. I can get some fenderish tones out of it, but it;s no Fender or a Marshall for that matter. I don't want it to be a fender or Marshall either

Very cool and fun to play, but ultimately not "me" tonally.
There is a wide range of Z amps, and they're all unique.

The Maz 18 is a real chameleon of an amp in that I've been able to dial in Marshall, Vox and Fender tones pretty easily. I played today with friends alongside a Divided by 13 and another Dr Z(EZG 50) and the Maz was monster sounding.
bumblefingers January 6th, 2010, 01:29 PM about ready to pull the trigger on a Z. Wanted to see if someone could just validate what very little I know:
Maz 18 reverb 112 combo.
Tend to prefer cleaner amps in the blues/country vein. I only play at home and volume is a concern for me (can't get too loud with a baby in the house).
I wanted to make sure that I shouldn't be looking at another model. I've only really been able to play Maz's as most of the other models that are local to demo are not in stock or too much power/volume.
A head/cab combo isn't out of the question, but generally my impression would be more volume than i need going the cab route. How much do the 112 combo's weigh roughly?
Hollmanp90 January 6th, 2010, 02:04 PM MAZ is LOUD.....Not that,if ya,go with a Airbrake you can't enjoy it........But I'm telling ya,its loud......it sound good no matter where ya set it....but the sweeter tones are at a higher volume.
1 x12" combo with verb is +50 pounds......With all that talk......Go for it.

In your situation, spending the extra money for the Air Brake would be a good investment. I'm pretty much in the same boat (minus the baby - just live in a tract home with neighbors too close), and the Air Brake allows you to push the amp into its "sweet spot" at a much lower volume.
I like the head/cab route because you could always get a 1-10 cab for your use now, then upgrade to a 2-10 or Z-Best later if you want/need it. You could do the same thing by plugging the cab into your combo, but then you're stuck with lugging a combo and cab instead of just head/cab.

I use a Weber 50 watt Mini Mass attenuator with my Carmen Ghia and can dime the amp without disturbing my wife while she works downstairs. And with the brightness switch on the attenuator giving back some of the highs that attenuators tend to rob, I don't feel like the amp's tone is choked (too much). Well, maybe the Ghia is choked a little by the attenuator, but it sounds so damn good to begin with that even choked it sounds remarkable. The mini mass is one of the best attenuators and can't be beat as far as price goes. One of only a few gear purchases that I have NEVER had a second thought about (the Ghia is another).

There was about a one inch long strip of wood knocked off one of the edges on the back of it. Not very deep. The tolex was torn off the spot but still tightly glued down. They painted the gash with some black paint. Barely even noticable.

grinchmonkey January 14th, 2010, 10:51 AM I have a Maz Jr. 2x10 combo. I love the amp, it's not quiet, but it is quiet enough for small venue gigs. I can dial in great tone on my Strat as well as my Les Paul just using the cut knob (and adjusting the master volume). When my Tele is finished, I assume it will sound equally good through this amp. I have heard several of the models and pretty much liked them all. My brother plays through an A/B'ed Maz Sr for clean and Maz Jr for dirty sometimes. I'd recommend them to just about anyone.

Got asked to do a dirty and cranked......Its really the first time I have had a chance to record anything loud or at all.......So I'm dialing things in.....No FX.....The "WAH" tone comes from a mod on the mud setting I'll refer to as the "Big Ballz" mod from here on out.
Very usasble on the clean side of thangs' as opposed to the 1/2 cocked way I had been using with the Don Mare Super Sport.

Ormond January 14th, 2010, 06:53 PM I just got my copy of the two-hour plus Z DVD and it is really something. Pretty much any question one has about "what" a particular Z amp will do is covered. Gunns, and Brad Paisley. If the disc was not copyrighted I would post some clips. Maybe the good Dr. and the production company will agree to put some more of the clips up on YouTube.

But I still love my 66 Deluxe Reverb.
vincent January 15th, 2010, 06:50 PM I have a Maz 18 jr and must say it is just a wonderful amp. It was a good investment. It has a nice Vox chime to it but it is much more flexible. Great quality amp, built like a tank. I go back and forth between the Z and a AC15.
They are similar, but different. Come to think of it, maybe I should run them in stereo to get the best of both worlds.

tele-hand March 2nd, 2010, 06:59 PM pedalcr8z - got the exact same amp a month ago. The milkshake thick tone is unbelieveable. I play country clean with a Keeley compressor most of the time, but I love what my pedals sound like after I re-calibrated from the settings I use with my Goodsell Super 17 - simply amazing. My arms are going to get a little longer haulin' the EZG 50 between gigs, but if that's what it takes to get tone like this I have no complaints.

tdarian May 6th, 2010, 09:43 PM New MAZ18 NR Head/Z 1-12 Convertable cab with G12H30 here. Awesome amp for me. Love pedals...really does not need them although I'm getting sweetness with a Hermida Reverb out in front. This amp came stock with the new tonestack bypass, but to tell you the truth, I've had the amp for almost 2months and have not even tried the bypass.
Also have a Mini-Z head. What a blast!
Hope to get a Z-28 head at some future point, and perhaps a 2-10 cab as an alternative or to use in combination with the 1-12. Great amps!
I used to have a MAZ18 Reverb combo....seems like the NR version has slightly more gain, and I'm clearly hearing the nuances of my different guitars much more clearly with the new head.
My Kirn T sounds marvelous through this amp, as do my PRS.
Life is good!

Durtdog July 12th, 2010, 09:08 AM 50+ LBS? That's sort of amazing. My old 2x12 Pro Reverb is less than that!
I recently looked at the Dr. Z website and was surprised that the MAZ 1x12 is 65 pounds. Roughly the same as my '68 Twin Reverb. With all the ragging on Twins about their weight, I've never heard anyone mention the MAZ being a boat anchor.
Not that I'm that weight conscious...if it sounds good I use it. I was just really surprised.
ravindave_3600 July 12th, 2010, 11:57 AM So after losing one speaker where does the doctor put all that weight?
Hollmanp90 July 12th, 2010, 01:30 PM I have a MAZ 2x10 here.....I was guessing 40ish, its right at 50 pounds with brake-lite and slip cover. I think the speakers gotta weight some where around 7 pounds(?) maybe a tad more.
This one I can carry along with a guitar case(gig bagger backpack style and my small pedal board)....but the 2x12 I had was a beast !!!!
cacibi August 17th, 2010, 03:49 PM Ordered up an EZG-50 yesterday...can't wait! Have a Galaxie currently - and had a Maz 18 NR 2x10, and a Maz 38 with verb. Wish I still had that Maz Jr. I'm a big fan of the Dr. Z 10" speaker too.
cacibi August 25th, 2010, 11:39 PM Okay so - if you had and EZG, and wanted to get another Dr. Z head to use with it (running the two amps on an amp switcher) - which head would you get?
Was thinking either a Stang Ray or Mazerati GT, or maybe just a Monza 1x10 combo to perch up there and give me a little EL84 tone.
teledaddyo September 2nd, 2010, 12:33 PM I picked up a used Z-28 1x12 yesterday thanks to the little brown truck and a great music store with incredible service. The amp's black with piping and gold speakergrille cloth. It sounds great with all my axes but I'm finding it hard to stop playing. I'm very pleased with it esp. b/c I have two other 6V6 based amps to draw experience from sonically. It's like my SF Princeton with more girth and incredible break up. It's cleaner than the clean on the Rivera Clubster Doce. I'm not a gainster style wise and this amp suits my tastes and sound. It also handles my pedals well. I almost bought a Monza but for less than $1K I couldn't pass this one up.http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg227/fishindaddyo/Z28.jpg

sambora014 October 13th, 2010, 02:14 PM Hi,i live in Europe, not really having an opportunity to try any Dr.Z model of amps.I would like if you guys can advice me on which model i should look for.The best tone i have played with and the one i am looking for is kind of Fender Tween cranked up...I like that open, not compressed overdriven sound with no that much tight on bass strings as marshall but not tinny as vox ac 30.I guess i should not look for EL 34 or EL 84 tubes based amp.I was thinking 6L6 or 6V6,but wondering what among these two tubes designed amp would sound bigger and fatter-6L6 or 6V6 amp?Thinking maybe the one i am looking for is Galaxie! Also, i do not need that much loud amp(since while i was playing trough Vox Ac 30 did not go ever more than half of the power, with pre-amp volume set at half, with EJ Stratocaster),but wondering if i go wit Galaxie model, how loud can i get from the amp, before goes to crunch on clean channel one.Am i going to have at least 15-20watts of clean headroom? Please, advice?

I haven't tried a Galaxie but here's my recommendation: The Z-28 is a 6V6 amp that is designed to sound like a Fender Deluxe. As the man says, "Having more of an American type sound, the Z28 gives you a wide pallet to work from. You can dial in a clear, sweet clean sound as well as a biting crunch with just 3 knobs."
I find plenty of clean headroom with only 22 watts.

therecordfable January 9th, 2011, 01:49 PM How do you like the Giah Mark?
markxander January 12th, 2011, 10:33 PM It's awesome! Just did my first gig with it last week and it sounded amazing. I play in a two guitar cover band and used to use a Fender (the other guy uses a Fender, too), and sometimes we got in each other's way. Really nice blend.
It's a monster with my Gadow custom hollow--haven't had a chance to play my teles super loud through it yet, although I think it will be ridiculously good.
This thing looooooves tubescreamers. Loves 'em! Have a Mad Professor Little Green Wonder on the way that should really give it the business.

Sounds great...normally I run the master at 7 and the volume at 5-6 and it sounds great. Practiced last night for the fist time with it and it sounded great.

eggman February 27th, 2011, 01:53 AM Howdy,
Tonight I plugged my Twang King equipped Tele into my Ghia. It's been ages; I've gone almost exclusively to my 335 over the last 2 years.
The low volume clean tones were all there. That Weber AlNiCo Silver Bell got me into British Invasion territory with it's chimey Kerrang. Shame on me for neglecting my Tele.

MReynolds March 12th, 2011, 11:07 PM I got a deal on a Maz18NR from a guy who needed the money. Now I need to know the ultimate Tele to plug into it.....I want to get it right the first time. American standard all stock? The new Deluxe with the N3 pups? Maple or rosewood neck? What ya'll think?
ravindave_3600 March 13th, 2011, 01:11 AM loduck, that is a very subjective question. I have a 73, stock, with maple, and a 62 copy with a hum in the bridge and a rw neck. I love 'em both.

Thanks for the reply....just hoping to get a starting direction with now having a Z amp. I kinda need to do it all, country twang, classic rock meat, smokin' blues tones. I know the Z will do it, but want a Tele over a Strat....just like 'em better. Thanks for any advice. :)
ravindave_3600 March 15th, 2011, 09:44 PM I kinda need to do it all, country twang, classic rock meat, smokin' blues tones.
I'd go with a standard, plain 'ol, maple-neck tele. It's good for
Brent Mason to Brad Paisley
Keith Richards to Jimmy Page
Muddy Waters to well, ME!
and with the humbucker/rw neck I lose some of that country-ness.
lumco March 16th, 2011, 12:18 PM Step up right to the top and order a Bill Crook Tele style guitar. Just recieved mine today and still drooling, looking for a rag to wipe off the mess.....
asatfan March 17th, 2011, 08:50 AM I purchased a Z28 and convertable 1 x 12 cab several weeks ago. Gigged with it for two weekends and couldn't quite get enough high end out of it. So...decided I needed to try a Ghia. Just arrived on Tuesday, and so far I'm loving it. Much more sparkle than the Z28, yet still has the full, round low end. The proof (for me, anyway), is in the gigging. An amp can sound great at home, or in a studio, but until I play it live with the band, I really can't make a final decision. I'm hoping the Ghia is the one.....this could get expensive!

joeismyname June 3rd, 2011, 04:07 PM I've had my Z Prescription for a couple of years now, like it a lot! Mine's been modded to add a master volume in the back of the amp, works real nice, it can take the volume way down without changing the tone too much.
I recently bought a Z 2x12 openback cab for it.
amazing freaking amp...I use one at the large church I play for every couple weeks. The church has some generous attenders and someone gave it to them to keep on stage for any of the players that come and play (it's a megachurch so lots of guitar players play there)....incredible tones from this thing.

vox Phantom September 18th, 2011, 06:58 PM Today I went with a friend to a local music store
I looked at a Vox AC30 then a Gretsch Playboy and
the last amp a DR Z Jazz 20/40 with reverb and Trem:cool:
I'm looking for a new amp and out of those three the DR Z
with my Telecaster sounded the best. I don't know much about
these amps but there was one thing that I didn't like on the
amp it had a (Master Volume):!: If I were to buy that amp could
it be sent back to DR Z to take out the Master Volume circuit?
Or is that something that I would have to do myself and I wish
the amp had a 2X12 or 4 X10 the 1X12 doesn't do much for me.
I did like the 20/40 for playing at home and playing out does anyone
here have that model.
eggman September 25th, 2011, 02:11 PM Howdy,
I doubt Dr.Z would perfrom this surgery, although he's known to stand behind his amps problem-wise. I'd look for a different model; Dr.Z has so many popular amps. I'm a satisfied Carmen Ghia owner, fwiw. Good luck!

What's wrong with a master volume? If it's post-phase-inverter, and my guess it is - just turn it up all the way and glue the knob if you don't use it. Same as not having one. Who started the rumor that an amp is better without a master volume? With a couple of rare exceptions from many years ago, I can't think of any possible advantage...

hybridrocknroll September 25th, 2011, 10:26 PM Dickie is right, all of the Z's that have MV's you can max it and it'll be exactly like the models with no MV. My RXjr with the MV cranked is exactly the the same as the RXES which is the no MV, tone-wise.

This amp's MV is not PPIMV it is wired like a Marhall plexi. This type of MV isn't that good as tone is affected when turning down the MV.

I have two, because I leave one at church. Why two of the same amp? Well, I don't like variety! I found my tone for my style. Playing something other than my rig is a compromise, and I long for my tone. I'm too old to lug it back and forth too...
guitar dan February 2nd, 2012, 12:16 AM I was all set to get a Maz 38 until I read this thread. Now I'm wondering if I should get the Maz 18 because of comments that the 38 is too loud. Is it too loud to get the break up point, or just the point of opening up for fullness?
Does the 18 have enough headroom to give you the choice of running it clean or slightly dirty without driving the sound man crazy?
I know the 38 is loud at the break up point...
I'll be using it with pedals for all kinds of gigs- rock, country, variety- r&b, jazz, etc.
Thanks for the input. Looking forward to joining the club!!!!!

Do you get useable clean or "just breaking up" sounds at club volumes with the RX Jr.?

I get useable cleans, and the praise team is a 6 piece with 5 singers. It is plenty loud... but remember, I'm in church! We don't crank it, but we do have a pastor that beats the heck out of the skins...

donh February 4th, 2012, 03:03 AM Why did you do it? Too loud? ...for bedroom or stage?
I play something else in the bedroom, dude!
The 18 was more than I needed for where and what I play. My stages are a bit lower-key volume-wise than typical weekend-band venues. The 8 gets me the tone I want at the level I am comfy with - it also gets me more tone variation thru my fingers than I personally got with the 18.
The guy I traded with is happy as well, since he needed more volume for what he does.

"The first Maz 18 was a smallbox combo. I've only seen one other one. "
Here's mine. Likely the second one built. Celestion Blue 12. Doc called me one Saturday, and asked me to bring my old '57 Strat to his shop. He was fine-tuning the prototype Maz Jr.. All I did was play, and sometimes comment that I liked the first cap better than the second cap that he had subbed in. We were both quite stunned by how good the amp sounded. It was the two ten version. The last thing I played,,, I dropped the low E to D, and strummed a D13th chord. Now that chord has some interesting dissonance's in it. The articulation was just wonderful! Mike and I just looked at each other, and said, "Yeah!" Drove my Dad's car down to Florida the next day. Couldn't get the amp outa my mind. Called him two or three days later, and said I had to have one. But Doc knew I had a fondness for Celestion Blues, so I got this one on my return to Cleveland. A wonderful amp! And I feel very honored that it was tuned to my playing my old '57!
I also have an early Prescription. But that's another story!
asatfan February 17th, 2012, 10:01 AM Good story there Mr. Miles! That thing looks like new! Bet it sounds great with all your Hipshot equipped geetars!
The last year or so I've been playing a Z28 with an open back 1x12....always wanted to try a Celestion Blue in the cabinet (guess I'd need to go to 2x12, or I'd be likely to blow just one)! It's got a greenback in it now. Wish I could get my hands on a couple more Z's!

The tube setup was just right for a CG and when I tested the Power Transformer loaded, it was just at the right voltage level as CG. I had a hard time fitting all the circuit in the small chassis but got it accomplished. Sounded real good but I built it for a friend and had to let it go. It's kind of a hack job and not too pretty but functional!! Platefire
eggman July 19th, 2012, 12:54 PM Howdy,
Several months ago I replaced the Weber AlNiCo Silver Bell (30 watts, pre-rola) in my 1x12 Z cab (I have a Carmen Ghia head) with a Celestion blue. After 4 months I'm still not sure if it's an improvement.
The Silver Bell has better clean tones and more bottom end, while the Celestion blue has a certain harmonic richness and complexity not found in the Silver Bell. FWIW, the Silver Bell has more headroom, too. Anyone else want to weigh in on thier favorite speakers for thier Z amp?
PS: Platefire, I'm impressed with your amp!

Thanks on the CG clone. I toyed around with it for a couple of weeks after I finished it before I sent it to my friend. I like the response of the amp but it was a bit bright for me. The tone control operation was kine of different. I like a fat tone even with my tele and I had turn the tone control to about 3:00 to get close to my tone and about 12:00 on my humbucker guitars.
On speakers for my purposes I've been using an Eminence Patriot Ragin Cajun in my DIY 1-10 cab. I'm usually a 12" speaker man but this 10" seems to do everything I require. I've got several DIY tube heads and all sound good through it. Platefire
BTW-I've always heard good things about the silver bell but never played over one. Got other Webers in my 1482 and DIY Champ that sound great.
Teleglide July 25th, 2012, 02:23 PM Rejoining this club after a hiatus of several years - I just bought a used Route 66 from a friend. I had a 66 about 10 years ago, and at one time also owned a Ghia and a Mazerati. I've always missed the Route 66, and can't wait to get it (this Friday)! I have a couple of gigs this weekend to get to know it on.
I'm glad to be back in the Z club!
MReynolds July 26th, 2012, 12:40 AM MAZ Jr. no reverb combo in red here. The most paint peelimg 18 watts ever !! A little hefty to lug around though. No regrets.
mumbleswitch July 27th, 2012, 10:33 AM This is my second Maz jr and third Dr Z Previously had a red Maz 18 Jr Reverb head and matching 1x12 cab with a Celestion Gold. Later purchased a Rt 66 head and have since moved to the portability of a blonde Maz 18 Jr NR 1x12 combo. Swapped the G12H-30 for a WGS-ET65 and love it.
Thank you Dr Z
BobC55 August 5th, 2012, 12:47 AM I have a Dr. Z Stangray and a Carmen Ghia, and I love them both. With these two amps, I can play small clubs or outdoor festivals. I use a 1x12 cab with a Celestion Vintage 30. It does all I need to do and more.
I'm sure this has been covered already but, I love it when someone comes up to me and asks where I got a "Zenith" amp. I always, politely, give them the short version of what I'm playing. But........is there any significance to the resemblance of the logos? Just wondering. Is there any backstory to Dr. Z's logo? Again, just wondering.
Thanks.

I just picked up an RxES. Incredible tone and incredible volume. Haven't been able to turn the volume past 2. I have a friend who is loaning me his Bad Cat "The Leash", so I'm going to test it with the attenuator. I'm running it through an Avatar 2x12 with a Mojotone BV-25M and an Eminence Legend. Clean tone at the low volume is amazing. Due to the volume, I haven't been able to open it up and drive the tubes. Takes pedals beautifully. More to come
GearHund August 14th, 2012, 10:23 AM I have a Mazerati (not GT) 2x12 combo and that thing was HEAVY. At the end of a night I dreaded carrying it out to the car. So I built a this head box for it. It's gets great cleans at lower volumes, but has to be super loud to get any crunch. I generally run the dirt from pedals which it takes very well. Love the single tone control, there's a whole world of sounds and really not a bad sound anywhere on the knob. it's a keeper for me.
bbigd0 August 14th, 2012, 10:24 AM Recently got a Red Monza . Put in a 12AY7 tube on V1. Sounds great. Also got an Airbrake ,but didn't really need it with the Master Vol. So put the Airbrake in my Deluxe Rev. Am running both through a Radial ABY. Sounds great on "Both" (amps)
hovik August 26th, 2012, 08:17 PM Just joined the club with my Z-28 1x10 combo in red with the red fang speaker. A brake lite is on its way to my house because this is just way too much amp for my bedroom! One of the best amps that I have ever played hands down. Thanks doc!
eggman August 26th, 2012, 10:55 PM Howdy,
Lovely amp, Hovik. One hears all about how warm the Z-28 is. My only Z is a Carmen Ghia, but I'll bet your Z-28 is perfect for your Tele!
hovik August 27th, 2012, 11:53 AM Ya eggman, the z28 is definitely warm....use it a lot for funk/jazz/rock. It can also get pretty bright on the bridge position. Definitely a happy camper here!
jmiles August 27th, 2012, 12:08 PM Platefire,
Good job! I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but the first Carmen Ghias were built using Hammond reverb amps. I scored several for Doc. When the supply of those dried up, he started building from scratch, with his own chassis. The Hammond reverb amp was small, about the size of a lunchbox.
JukeJointJimmy September 7th, 2012, 09:09 PM Took delivery on my new blonde Maz Jr. combo yesterday.......LOVE the tone!! Here is my question....is it just my amp, my imagination, or does the Maz Jr. have a really subtle (almost weak) reverb. I can max the reverb out on my new amp and it lands nowhere near the reverb on other amps I have or have owned. It's not that I have to have lots of wet signal, but I do like to have it available.....wondering if it is an issue with my particular Maz Jr. or if others have a similar experience?
Thanks for your input!!
JJJ
mrsongbird September 7th, 2012, 10:37 PM The Maz reverb is certainly different from any Fender-styled tank. There's not a whole heck of a lot of drip or anything; it's much more subtle and out of the way. Some folk like it, others gravitate to the NR version.
hal September 7th, 2012, 10:41 PM I have a Maz 18 for sale in the amp classifieds....
snakestrecher$ September 8th, 2012, 01:00 AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2Uk1Dk4E5s&feature=youtube_gdata_player
snakestrecher$ September 8th, 2012, 01:03 AM That's me playing w reverb maxed. I totally agree w your observation, it is a much more subtle reverb, a fender gets washy and distant beyond five. I like the maz reverb, it's easy to make it washy w a pedal if that's what your looking for
bbigd0 September 8th, 2012, 11:12 AM Got a Monza a few months back. Very nice. Changed out the #1 Tube to a 12ay7. Big difference in Volume. Am now using it it in tandem with a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Great sound !
snakestrecher$ October 8th, 2012, 07:30 PM Anyone have recording using a maz?
vanklomk October 17th, 2012, 09:16 PM http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx181/vanklomk/Rig1.jpg
Got a new cab today, so thought I should get a picture of my rig. KT-45, old style 1x12 with Celestion Gold. Loud! Pictured with my Reverend Buckshot. Basement is a bit dark and I was too lazy to grab a flash or strobe.
Toadhopper57 October 18th, 2012, 12:38 PM Hello All,
New to the forum and needed some advice.
I have Dr. Z EZG 50 head and would appreciate some cab recommendations. I play blues mostly with some rockabilly laced in for good measure. I am considering selling the amp as I can't seem to get the tone that I am look for. Before I do I would like to make sure to give it more time with speaker combinations etc. as I don't want to give up a 2k amp for 1.5k and then realize that I was playing through the wrong speakers.
At present I run it through a 2X12 cab with an Eric Johnson 1250 and a Cannibis Rex. I also have a 15" webber loaded cab and a 10" Lopo cab with a webber but all three arrangements are just missing something.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions...
Randy
Telesavalis October 18th, 2012, 01:02 PM Z's are wonderful amps.
I have a blonde rig - a 2001 Carmen Ghia head that I pair with a 2 x 12 Mesa cab.
and also a 2010 Z wreck amp/cab in silver. Both are awesome amps.
MatthewDickin October 25th, 2012, 03:56 PM Finally decided on a Mini Z after a long, fun search for a really great sounding 5 watt amp. I can't believe how good this sounds. It sure is pretty too - I love that the red Rolex is almost, almost pink.
Sounds just unbelievable, warm and rich and loud for five watts...
bflook November 20th, 2012, 08:49 PM I play 2x12 Z cabinet with a18 watt Maz 18. Play an Eric Johnson Strat through it. The tone is exceptional and I really enjoy it. The gritty tone is great, but sweet lean tones are a little harder. I have a 1951 Twin that produces sweet tones clean. That's aid, the Z is my go to amp.
bflook November 21st, 2012, 08:15 PM This is my baby! More fun than I should be allowed to legally have.
