I built myself a 50w plexi (the classic #1987 circuit) and put a PPIMV in the back - housed in a Mojo orange colored smallbox cab:

I also built a 50w JCM800 (#2204 circuit) punched the chassis for an extra 12AX7 preamp tube, installed 12 volt DPDT relays (as well as a 120-12v transformer) and a footswitch on the back, and now have two seperate preamps that I can footswitch. The two channels are nearly identical, but one has a slightly fatter cathode bypass for more bass and each channel has their own Gain and Master Volume controls. I call it a dual JCM800 (again, in a Mojo smallbox head cab):

Johnny, love the JCM800 dual -monster ideas. Very creative. Sounds like you are the go to guy for techy questions!

I have an Orange 2x12 cab that would go well with your orange head too. Pity I just got my JTM45 absolutely stock and I am fishing for a Mesa 2x12 cab new or used to use with it.

My back story: this amp mania got going back in march when I went to Australia's first "National Amp & Guitar Show" -it was held here in the aussie capital (and in my suburb too) so I had no defences -I just had to go and get gassed up! I found the local kit expert Mr Lark there demo-ing some Princeton clones and they were built beautifully, like artwork, every solder, every wire.... and besides vintage Fender I also drooled over vintage Marshall, Vox, Ampeg etc (with !!! price tags but loads of mojo) -classic rock guitar! I found out I am just as sucky even on a early 70s vintage Strat priced at about US50,000 thru a vintage amp. Oh well.

Anyone else found their Marshall GAS at a show? Or maybe a gig where someone used a Plexi that grabbed you? :rolleyes:

I may trade my AVT100 in on one of those new 40 watt Haze combos if they sound as good as some folks are saying.

Mine will have some small differences. For cosmetic reasons only I have ordered some bits on feebay...

A 6inch plastic logo painted gold.

Fender feet, genuine parts. I don't like the rubber things that came in the kit -I like the feet on the Fender Supersonic head I have.

Also I ordered some Fender lean-back legs for the cab. Now I have to find a set of Fender head/cab "piggy back" attaching brackets with the metal (same as Tele) knobs.

Yeah, I'm a dag. I shouldn't bother... but I do.

I used to have a DSL100... actually a lot nicer than most post-JCM800 Marshalls.

I sold it since I have so many amps I built already... but it was still a great amp that got a lot of use!

On the new Weber JTM amp this arvo and 2 little faults popped up.

1. The little red light (power on) starts flicking and dimming and even turned off about the 2 hour mark.

2. The inputs (but mainly the guitar input ch1 top) feel loose, aka a wimpy grip, with no positive click/grab.

More work required I think.

And I'd like metal corner protecters for the box, screw in.

I used a Weber JTM45 kit as the foundation for my build. I was shocked how cheap EVERYTHING was. Fired it up, it worked fine for a few hours - then the PT blew... dead.

I had already replaced the caps with proper multi-section cans, the jacks, the entire bias circuit's parts, and a few other of the cheapest/lamest things. So after replacing all of that and the PT I realized such a cheap kit ended up costing me as much as if I woulda gone with a better kit.

Another major irritation was the filter caps on that standup board. It would have been difficult to get to if I needed to resolder anything, it took up too much space inside, and some of the eyelets were close to either the chassis bottom or the top (where most folks lay metallic shielding in the cab).

I've since replaced even more of the cheap parts and with Hammond OEM style transformers the thing is MUCH better.

I did a scratch build on my orange 50w plexi. Mojo chassis and faceplates, drilled/staked my own board, and went from there.

You may want to check all of your heater wiring as well as your power section.

Is there some insider trick to getting cheap road cases for this kind of amp or should I have just accepted the fact that I'm not playing arenas and gotten a combo?

Could be a microphonic preamp tube. I used to have a TSL60 before I had the DSL100. No noise issues whatsoever.

Road cases? Unless you're going from Boston to Tulsa in a VW bus, a Marshall can take quite a beating - more than quite. Squirel away a few bucks a month and once you have to fly to Hawaii for a gig, then invest in a road case :)

That there's my 50w JCM800 under my homebrew semi-hotrodded 50w '800 clone in its temporary clothes (I'm in the process of building a combo cab for it now). Also visible are my Tele (MIM Tele Special) and Gretsch (Historic Series Streamliner). Both sound great through my beasts.

I've been known to play through two JCM800 halfstacks live. Monster sounds there.

I love my Marshalls.

On the new Weber JTM amp this arvo and 2 little faults popped up.

1. The little red light (power on) starts flicking and dimming and even turned off about the 2 hour mark.

2. The inputs (but mainly the guitar input ch1 top) feel loose, aka a wimpy grip, with no positive click/grab.

More work required I think.

And I'd like metal corner protecters for the box, screw in.

Progress report on my JTM45 weber:

The little red light has come good and has no probs, fixed itself.

Purchased new input jacks (4) to get fitted this weekend. Double clicks (stereo jacks) just like on my Teles.

Metal corners -obtained 4 metal cnrs that fit the front edges of the box perfectly. It seems to be harder to get the rear set. When its apart for drilling for the corners I think I'll rattle-can black the insides of the box too.

Also I have checked the valves installed by my builder.

Being a newb I have to ask "whatchathink??"

**first 3 x PreAmps = 12AX7 Tung Sol brand (made in Russia)

**then 2 x Poweramps = EL34 by Electro-Harmonix brand (green logo, made in Russia).

**lastly 1 x Rectifier = 5AR4 by Matsu****a brand (Mullard clone, made in ?)

Yeah I am hardcore fan of the 2203 / 2204 circuit. I have my own that I built.

mainly od / boost, fuzz and phaser / flanger.

Use to be big on delay with it. but I busted my DD-6 and my analog delay was stolen. :lol: so no more delay!

But my board is usually a bad bob boost or treble booster, two fuzz's one mid scoop huge sounding fuzz (muff like) and a spitting spattery fuzz (super fuzz, silicon fuzz faces). and a phaser (phase 100) or flanger (MXR flanger).

My problem started in 1989, when I ordered and recieved the first JCM 900 2500 SL MkIII with a 1969 slant cab in PDX.

I had no idea how addicting my new 50 watt half stack Marshall would be. Mmmmm... the smell of hot tubes in the morning...

It's been to every gig with me since, it's been re-tubed, hand-biased and tweeked by Bob at Eurotubes, and gets the kid glove treatment. It's been recorded on seven CDs. It's in all our videos. I'm hooked for life on this Marshall of mine. :)

...Second, I've realized that if I ever want to gig the thing, I'm gonna have to drop $900 in cases for it! Is there some insider trick to getting cheap road cases for this kind of amp or should I have just accepted the fact that I'm not playing arenas and gotten a combo?

My old bandmate used an army surplus footlocker as a case for his JMP 100watt Marshall head. Not an exact fit, had to be padded out with foam, but not the most expensive case in the world either:grin:

I still got my issued "footlocker, olive drab, steel", and I reckon it'd fit two heads and some bubble wrap easy!

Early 80s JCM 800 100watt... Too loud for the closet it currently resides in :sad:

Here's my JCM800. I don't use it that much any more (or the epiphone for that matter) but it's a great old amp. If I plug in my marshall 2x12 extension cab, it gets monster loud. Very AC/DC :)

Sorry, no pic :oops: but I love my hand-wired 18w 1974x clone (which does in fact sport a Marshall logo :cool:). Dark green tolex with two Celestion Alnico Blues :grin:. It's the *perfect* club amp, IMO; it overdrives beautifully, but cleans up just enough when you back off the volume knob. I've been having fun running various P90s through it just to hear it grrrowwwwlllll. :twisted: CS

A 4010! Very nice. That's an AWESOME Marshall circuit (pretty much a 2204 50w head in a 1x12" combo format). Don't use it much?! I'd offer to buy it if I lived nearby :)

Those are awesome amps. Two Celestion Blues makes it better-than-awesome. I no longer have the old school 18w, but I did build a sort of variation that I also run through 2x12" Blues.

Mine started as a classic 18 watt Marshall power section with a JCM800-ish preamp (cascaded, minus the tonestack). I later added negative feedback (sorta like a Presence control) and tweaked the power section to run a bit stiffer on the bass (much larger cathode bypass cap on the pair of EL84).

So its sort of like a hybrid JCM800+1974x. Sounds glorious through them Blues!

My "feebay-won-it-cause-the-other-bids-were-withdrawn-because-the-amp-was-1000-miles-away-from-civilization-and-the-road-freight-is-unreliable" cross my fingers JCM800 combo has arrived. I checked what i could then took it to my amp guy for a service/oil change. It was so dusty in the back...

Two of the previous owners had written on the bare birch inside when they got it in 1989 (1) and 1997 (2). Its a 1987 build. [There was a big recession here during 87-88-89 with high unemployment. Could be it was sold to the first owner in 1989.]

Original speakers in good nick it seems. Its the 4212 (reverb) model and it weighs 35kgs (80lb?).

Tolex is in good condition. Grille cloth is very good. Maybe it had a sheltered life.

So -on a hunch- I got a good JCM from 900 miles away.

Nice head. A signed anniversary model I think. Which cab you using? I have a 2x12 vertical Mesa Rectifier cab under my JTM45 clone.

In the order I got them...

MG15MSII, MG100HDFx and JCM2000DSL.

These days I use the MG15MSII for it's headphone feature. The JCM is "Standing Tall" in my guitar room and the MG100 is packed up in boxes down in the basement, awwww!!!
