Martin D41 kit for $349(vs. $4000+ list price for a factory D41 Martin)

OK I'm cheap n' greedy: a solid rosewood back and sides high end Martin for a startin' price of under 350 bucks..

Anyone out there in TDPRI land built a Martin kit? Do I have a fightin' chance at pullin' off a respectable DIY acoustic Martin kit job?

Or should I forget about it and reserve my weekends instead for riiding my classic BMW bike?

Wow that kit is tempting,

With patience and lots of it........ and in tools that would probably eat up the remaining $3600. You might have a nice gitfiddle..... :)

An ex bandmate of mine built a "J-40-12" using much of a martin J-40 kit plus some extras to make it a 12 stringer...as I recall Martin even sold him some Brazilian Rosewood at a good price...took him about 3 months to build it ...and at the time he had neither a shop nor a girlfriend he worked mainly on the coffee table in his living room...I should add that he is an extremely capable wood worker...had been a boatbuilder at one point ...and said that making the body was kind of like building a little boat...and even so, I know he had his moments when he figured he had an expensive pile of firewood....turned out real nice tho...he played around with the string spacing and neck shape to accomodate some creekiness in his hands...great sounding 12....and with the custom neck/string spacing, bazillion rosewood, etc, he got it for a fraction of the $$$ it would cost to have it built.
