I was wondering if any of you like playing reggae?
Reggae is Spiritual music for Spiritual healing. Give thanks and praises! You dont listen to reggae, you feel it! I-rie!

I play on the Wednesday worship team, and when the main pastor was the worship leader, he put "Lord I Lift Your Name On High". I always hit on then 2- and 4-beats, because I thought it sounded better, and once I dragged the whole band into reggae. Until pastor stopped us and started us with the right rhythm. B)

Some congregations can't even clap on 2 and 4 with straight pop----------reggae will be interesting!

Love the music! From Byron Lee and the Dragonaires to Big Youth, U-roy, I-roy, Trinity, Dillenger and the whole crew.

Won't do most of it in church because of the connection to Rastafarianism but since I grew up around a bunch of Rastas it comes naturally.

I have a CD of Christian Reggae Rap songs that is outa site but they aren't congregational so I leave them alone for now. If we ever get a performance band going might use them for that.

Raggae is a wonderful music. However, isn't it directly related to Rastafarianism? If my memory serves me right, Rasta, has something to do with Hallie Selasie being a mesiah or prophet and all Africans returning to Africa or Ethopia and the smoking of ganga is essential to it. Perhaps I'm wrong ... and excuse me for playing the devil's advocate especially here on the "Worship Service Players" forum. It's just I find some things here ironic and puzzling at times. Again if it's to the glory of God ... then make a joyful noise!

This sub-forum isn't dedicated to "christian" players...but those who play in a worship context regardless of stream of faith.

Tis a bit odd, but when playing reggae, I love the sound of the upswept pick on off beats...sometimes i'll set up a bit of slapback on the delay and sweep through the wah as I'm hitting the triad which gives a interesting warbly tonality to the repeat.

Hi,thanks for the kind words! I played guitar in Christafari from 93'-99', then some of us morphed into a band called Temple Yard and now a band called Rocksteady out of ATL.
[however i'm in Prague,CZ now]


Reggae is not all about Rasta,in fact, very few folks with dreads can call themselves Rastas.However Rastas read and learn from the same Old/New Testament that Christians read.[It is their view on the Holy Trinity and Selassie that differs.] Reggae can be very spiritual music,and regardless of your faith,thats something the world needs more of,dont you agree? Its also music with a message,often pointing out political/social injustice or the struggle to do good in a world full of evil do-ers.

In Christafari/Temple Yard we were able to play on tours like Reggae Sunsplash and festivals like Reggae On The River and we opened for bands like Steel Pulse,Aswad,Jimmy Cliff and even toured the US with the late great Joseph Hill and Culture.Pretty unique opportunity for a Christian band.
Looking back,it feels good to have made music with a positive message for all those years, and being in the first Christian Reggae band is something I'm proud of.

My good friend,amazing Reggae/all around player,and founder of Temple Yard and Rocksteady,Mark Sandiford, has been leading worship at Worldharvest Church in ATL for years.

That being said,learn your major/minor barr chords and dont play on top of the beat.......RELAX. It isnt SKA you know.
Learn how to double EXACTLY what the bass player is playing while muting the strings. this will also help you find the pocket in your rythem playing.
most of all, if you're the type of player that gets bored or antsy playing rythem, then perhaps you should move on to another style of music.
REGGAE is the sum of all the parts coming together,and the bass and drums are crucial.over played or rushed it can be a real MESS.

SWEET info!! Thank you!! I have knowledge of my barre chords (Major and minor with minor and major 7ths on 6th and 5th string roots), I just want to be able to fit into the music. I'm guessing that knowing the song is helpful to playing along with the bass player. I wouldn't be able to improvise quickly with barre chords like I do with lead lick playing. I also have to train my ear more so that I can know what barre chords will sound good on the 2-and-4 riddim.

yep,learning the basslines on yer guitar will train your ear,and will help you 'feel' where the riddim should fall.But the timing of the rythem has nothing to do with what chords to use.like any song or music,what key is it in? What is the singer trying to convey? there really are no 'reggae' chords,and you already know barre chords so your good to go.
but can you feel it? Like the blues,you cant really play it right until you can feel it.

again, dont over play,improvise or solo too much.
thats what is so cool with reggae,those big holes in the riddim.

when it is time to solo it really soars above the band,and almost anything can work,blues/rock/country licks all welcome.

Crap, I'm probably too uptight to feel reggae. It's hard for me to relax and just play...and still sound moderately listenable.

It took me years to feel and play the blues...
I suppose this is going to take years more...lol.

From my perception the "skank" or as you say the upswept pick on off beats is actually, traditionally played as a down stroke.

I know this is backwards from standard rock technique but check it out.

the few gigs I do when the reggae beat drops are almost always with 2 electric guitars. So agreed wholeheartedly that ska is upstroke (and my penchant for it probably shows from my punk background...that and it reminds me of the i sweep at the end of a rasgueado...yes, punk and flamenco, makes sense, eh?)

Back to the point...

When playing with 2 electrics and ensuring that we are leaving space for the music to breathe we hit the chords together and ensure different voicings. So while the other guitar (or I depending on day) hit the downstroke barre...the other plays upswept triads. Not traditional necessarily but it adds a bit of flavour.

I understand your point,but isnt that the same argument they used back in the day about rock and roll being 'the devils music'? As i'm sure you know,all our gifts are from GOD, its just up to the individual as to how to use them.
1 Corinthians 9:22 is about becoming all things to all men,that was our answer to those who said our music wasn't appropriate for church.

Use left hand fretting/unfretting to turn the chord on and off, right hand works with the drums. Bass plays melody, so guitar nails it down.
