Newbie wiring question

I'm using the pot/switch assembly from a donor MIM Standard for my partscaster but I'm replacing both pups. I've removed the stock pups.

Both stock pups have an extra strap spliced into the black ground which is soldered to a lug and screwed to the pup cavities.

The SD wiring diagrams I have, and every other 3 way diagram I've seen, do not have these extra grounds. The grounds on these schematics are only attached to the pot. I plan on using copper shielding and I thought the grounds should be attached there.

Should I run extra ground straps from the pot to the cavities?

I'm not sure what I'm talking about so I hope this question makes sense.

This lug is used for connecting the ground to the body. Do you notice black paint in the pickup cavities? If so it may be shielding paint. Using a multimeter check for a connection between the pots and the pickup cavities. If there is no continuity I would suggest using shielding tape. Attach the lug to the tape in the cavity. The idea is to have all the ground connections meet in one location. As long as both pots are connected to this lug you should be fine.

I failed to mention that I'm not using the MIM body which does in fact have shielding paint. I'm starting with a fresh body (rear rout controls).

Since the pups have ground leads to the pot, I'm assuming from your advice that I should run one additional ground at the pot to a lug somewhere in a cavity? Or should I follow the original MIM set up and run each pup ground to a lug in the cavity and solder another wire from each lug back to the pot?

As mentioned already by DILLIGAF?, unless you have shielding in the cavities those wires serve no purpose. Don't bother unless you plan to shield it later.
