How do you guys feel about this pedal? Are there any other pedals that will give me a similar sound? I'm looking for a warm overdrive/distortion...not something that sounds like a chainsaw in a heating duct.

MXR distortion pedalpowerchord10 April 6th, 2004, 10:13 AM How do you guys feel about this pedal? Are there any other pedals that will give me a similar sound? I'm looking for a warm overdrive/distortion...not something that sounds like a chainsaw in a heating duct. bo April 6th, 2004, 04:00 PM But when I think of my old Distortion + I mostly remember the signal loading and loss of top end. It was great when it was on, but when it was off it was a different story. TonyBlack April 6th, 2004, 06:05 PM but I just did an a/b last nite in my studio with an old 80's mxr dist+ and an 80's proco rat. The mxr was cool but didn't have alot of variety, kind of a "one trick pony". But the RAT was able to get alot of different tones, including a distortion similar to the mxr. My new /old fave is the Ibanez Super Metal, a very underrated distortion box IMO. Lots of options out there. Join the madness  TB powerchord10 April 6th, 2004, 07:35 PM The reason I asked is because I know Springsteen uses one at times. I'm now looking into a Danelectro Daddy-O pedal. I like the price and I've heard good things. People have said it can do everything from a noisey distortion sound for indie-rock (Radiohead, Pixies) to a warm overdrive for blues and rock (here's where the Springsteen sound comes in) and it's even good for 60s garage rock and 70s punk (Clash is what I'm after). So I'm looking for a pedal that can go from warm, smooth, just barely overdriven sound...really smooth...to a raunchy stonesy kind of sound...and even a little further on occasion. powerchord10 April 6th, 2004, 08:09 PM Rather than cluttering up the board with another post...I guess I'll ask my other questions here. They're pretty basic, I'm really just getting started. Though I've played for...wow...7 years or so now...I've been in a rut for about 5 of those. I'm good at what I do...but I just don't do enough. I don't play with enough variation (2 scales and a bunch of chords gets boring after a while) and with enough attention to my sound. So...I'm determined now to finally start that band, pay attention to my sound (a couple new guitars...new fx...and tweaking my amp) and actually devote some time and money to this because I'm finding that it's really what I love. I'm 20 years old and I can't waste too much more time. So....here's my situation... Here's what I have: AMPS: -Peavey Bandit 112 (not a great amp...but it's not going anywhere. gives me solid state features with tube emulation and I'm happy enough with it). -Gorilla practice amp that I found in someone's trash. Fixed it up...at least it works. GUITARS: -Epiphone Les Paul (H-H). -Fender Tele (H-S). -Squire Tele Special (S-S). -Yamaha Acoustic-Electric. -Mitchell Acoustic FX: -DOD Supra Distortion (got this when I was into Metallica and stuff...now I can't stand the sound. Thinking that I could use it as a boost pedal for solos...would that work?) -DOD VGS-50 (got this when I wanted multi-effects but didn't have much to spend...about 5 years ago. Lost the power source about 3 years ago so I haven't heard it in a long time...but I hear it's crap except for the clean effects...chorus, flange, reverb and it's got a great 2-second delay. I'm planning on using it only for flange, chorus and delay) GOAL: I need a decent overdrive pedal that will give me a sound that is well suited for anywhere between Springsteen/Stones and The Clash. On occasion I want the versatility to go more bluesy too. Will the Danelectro Daddy-O do this for me? I can pick one up on ebay now for about $20...sounds like the perfect solution. From what I've heard it's a great pedal. Also, in the band I'm going to have a Springsteen-esque role of playing rhythm for the most part, but I'll take most of the big solos. For this reason I want to use the overdrive pedal, whichever one I choose, and then have a booster for the solos. I have the Supra Distortion which I hate on its own...but I'm thinking that I could use this as a boost. Probably not with the gain at 0...but very low...it might work well to give the biting sound I want to cut through the mix. What do you think about that? Will it work? This stuff is so much fun...just gotta plan it all out, and hopefully I'm not too far off from a pretty decent sounding rig. jjh37854 April 6th, 2004, 08:39 PM the blues driver is my fav for cheapies edited for clarity sorry by cheapies I meant cheap pedals not people :> powerchord10 April 7th, 2004, 12:05 AM Bought the Danelectro on Ebay. $32 including shipping and power supply. No picture...said near mint and included original packaging and booklets...so I'll take his word for it for that price. Now let's hope I like it....I'm sure I will. If it's good enough for Tom Petty it's sure as hell good enough for me (and he plays Teles too, right?). Can't wait to get it! jjmantele April 10th, 2004, 02:38 AM I have an old one. I committed sacrilege by adding and LED indicator and a socket for external 9vdc. I just wasn't going to go w/o the LED. I also have a Boss DS-1 and they are much different. The Dist+ has 2 knobs and, as mentioned, not a wide array of sounds. I like how it does not reduce low end. I consider it more of a "classic" sound and the Boss more of a "modern" sound. I also find that most "overdrive” type pedals sound different from amp to amp so I suggest bringing yours to a store to try some. |
