Great Bass RiffsJPark April 7th, 2009, 01:06 AM What are some great bass riffs you know? This is the solo from Driven by Rush wEs3eeNMCm0 morroben April 7th, 2009, 01:32 AM Fugazi- Waiting Room 50nHCo2n4Tw&feature=related not many good Fugazi clips on youtube...at least it has the song play_loud April 7th, 2009, 03:50 AM Can't have this thread without... Ct8HYm10tlI  cqmurphy April 7th, 2009, 06:27 AM when I was a kid learning to play bass, you HAD to learn how to play this lick. # what made it so essential was that you could impress your fellow musicians with your skill and knowledge of Megadeth while simultaneously impressing the non-musican/metalheads with your ability to play "that song from MTV news"... Fajah April 7th, 2009, 03:11 PM Couple of my favorites: Paul Turner Groove: ZKoSvuFncrI Alain Caron's D Code: qcsjlFFBU6M Tim Armstrong April 7th, 2009, 03:19 PM One of my favorites (dig the funky headstock on Chris Hillman's bass!): hzK5dmZHqr0 Tim psycho gun April 7th, 2009, 04:35 PM listen carefully the bass line from 7'07 to 8'40... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PycZnSWMvi0 Gunny April 7th, 2009, 06:06 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SP60n9v2YM&feature=PlayList&p=FF9091ADAC7BEC1B&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=3 from 1:30 you can hear the 'solo' which is essential the line played through all the verses too. Easy to learn and a good one to start off with. JPark April 7th, 2009, 07:02 PM I just remembered another one: Hysteria by Muse (warning, contains heavy mainstream rock) OZR_UkJV-wE marshman April 7th, 2009, 07:18 PM The first thing I ever heard and thought "now THAT'S a cool line!" (about age 9, didn't actually know it was a bassline then) was Silly Love Songs by McCartney. bobbybigmac April 7th, 2009, 11:35 PM My fav is still John Entwhistle's solo in my Generation. I still can't play it right so it sounds proper. Interesting clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdRs1gKpeGg All great licks guys but do you remember your first lick ????? Mine was "Black Magic Woman" and I had to learn it quickly when I volunteered to switch from trombone to bass in my HS jazz band. Jim W April 8th, 2009, 06:46 AM +1 My Generation mikeyd990 April 8th, 2009, 07:05 AM i dont play bass, but i think the opening bass riff (well actually it goes thru the entire song) in Hysteria by Muse is pretty sweet. Also the bass riff in Summer Skin by Death Cab for Cutie is pretty sweet. marshman April 8th, 2009, 09:12 AM I'm confused...are we talking about RIFFS or SOLOS? casterway April 8th, 2009, 10:06 AM -eIwfym0TbY JPark April 8th, 2009, 04:07 PM +1 My Generation +2 for My Generation And I can't believe I forgot about Dazed and Confused, it was the first song I learned on bass  jkingma April 8th, 2009, 04:16 PM The bass in Slow Drip Lizard by The March Violets is one of my favourite bass lines. Anything by Bill Laswell or Mick Karn is pretty high up my list as well. beefheart April 8th, 2009, 04:23 PM Jah Wobble's bassline in PIL's Poptones is my all time favourite. However according to the guitarist Keith Levene, he wrote it and told Wobble how to play the line. TeleFunking April 8th, 2009, 04:26 PM Chic - Everybody Dance nEvCPvLh_60 Great bass line! Sterling Indigo April 8th, 2009, 04:35 PM -eIwfym0TbY +1 I can name that tune (Dazed and Confused) in ONE note! TelZilla April 8th, 2009, 04:36 PM Macca- "Rain", "Hey Bulldog" Bootsy Collins, Parliament ( I think)- "Do that Stuff" ( the "I wanna go back" part) Carol Kaye- Good Vibrations intro Pretty much everything Duck Dunn played at Stax sirtwang April 12th, 2009, 01:56 PM Back in the sixth-grade whenever it rained and we couldn't go out for recess we would pull out the "class record-player" and spin a few tunes on it. I played "Supernaut" from Black Sabbath's Volume 4 over and over. I still love it all these (close to 40) years later. tonewoods April 12th, 2009, 02:06 PM There are no video clips I'm aware of but check out the first song on side 1 and the first song of side 2 (now track 6 on a CD I think) of the album pictured at left. <-------- Some of the best bass playing in the world. I'll second Jack Casady's into to "The Other Side of This Life" from "BIPLH"... ltyjNjsz8UU What is really interesting is that this is the only time I've ever heard it played this way. I've got dozens of versions of Casady intro'ing the tune from live concerts, etc., and saw them many times back in the day... But I have never heard it played even remotely like this version... Which is one of the coolest bass riffs I've ever heard... franchelB April 12th, 2009, 07:51 PM I'm confused...are we talking about RIFFS or SOLOS? But I'll say that my favorite bass lines are (in no particular order): 1. "All Right now" by Free 2. "N.I.B." by Black Sabbath 3. "We gotta get out of this place" by The Animals 4. A Stevie Wonder song from the '70s. I don't know the title, but the bass line into just kills for @ 15 seconds before the Stevie's keyboard kicks in. 5. "Whipping Post" by the Allman Brothers Band 6. "Roundabout" by Yes 7. "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by Taste of Honey 8. "Freakout" by Chic 9. "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith 10. "Jet City Woman" by Queensryche JPark April 12th, 2009, 10:21 PM Sorry about the confusion with the solo/riff thing, I could only find a clip of the solo (based off the riff) marshman April 12th, 2009, 10:25 PM FranchelB, I'd guess that your number 4 there is "I Wish", and it is a gem. I took me hours to learn the tab, then re-learn it in Eb, then tune back to pitch...Like so many Stevie Wonder tunes, it's in Eb, which is apparently a favorite keyboard key...I think this is it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYKYka-PNt0 Mikey3 April 13th, 2009, 09:42 AM No love for RHCP. I love Flea's bass lines, but what got me hooked as a kid was this song they too from Stevie Wonder hS3hEuAbuLE Gotta love Victor Wooten also!! Dz03O1dwnSQ bobbybigmac April 13th, 2009, 07:10 PM I'm confused...are we talking about RIFFS or SOLOS? Oops. I dun messed up. The 1st post said "Geddy Lee Solo" so that's why I posted a solo. For easy and classic funk Riff I'd like to suggest " Thank you" Sly and the Family Stone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YXPJOUD7G0 ccrnnr9 April 14th, 2009, 12:58 PM I guess I will add more of my personal favorites. First on my list is Jack Bruce's line from "Crossroads". This song convinced me to pick up a bass and is proof that bass is no easy instrument. I really dig the bass line from Miles Davis' "So What". It may be a stand up, but it sure rocks! "Time" by Pink Floyd, while an easy line, sure is sweet and is the essence of how great and essential bass can be even when kept simple. Lastly I have always digged the line from Sublime's 5446/Ball and Chain. Cool reggae rock vibe. ~Nick hekawi April 16th, 2009, 09:43 AM O'Jays-"For the Love of Money" 4mal April 16th, 2009, 10:13 AM not sure that it qualifies as a lick per se but I've always dug the line from Born Under a Bad Sign tuuur April 16th, 2009, 01:55 PM John Entwistle's bassline in Won't Get Fooled Again! You can't hear it that well in the band version: Rp6-wG5LLqE But here is his part isolated: DL4fVqlKWUw tuuur April 16th, 2009, 02:01 PM And of course Black night by Deep Purple... Scotty Lonesome April 16th, 2009, 03:18 PM Well, it's not quite a "riff" as much as a couple of PERFECT notes...that part in Heartbreaker (by Led Zep) right after the "...wicked ways of love" Scotty... tuuur April 17th, 2009, 12:47 PM Also check the bass riffing on this Stevie Wonder tune, on Sesame Street no less: _ul7X5js1vE franchelB April 17th, 2009, 04:42 PM FranchelB, I'd guess that your number 4 there is "I Wish", and it is a gem. I took me hours to learn the tab, then re-learn it in Eb, then tune back to pitch...Like so many Stevie Wonder tunes, it's in Eb, which is apparently a favorite keyboard key...I think this is it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYKYka-PNt0 Yep, that's the song! Thanks!! O'Jays-"For the Love of Money" Good call! And how can I forget "Lowrider" by War?!  Old Cane April 21st, 2009, 04:47 PM Not really a riff but.... http://www.hoodbass.com/ mudbean April 22nd, 2009, 07:23 PM Meshell Ndegéocello's bass line on John Mellecamp's cover of "Wild Night" by Van Morrison. Sir Paul's bass on "You Can't Do That". Yep, Stevie's "I Wish" cranks. Benny Rietveld's line on "Smooth" by Rob Thomas & Santana makes me smile. mud Big Tony April 24th, 2009, 03:11 PM The sound sucks, but this is a killer tune, with a great bass riff. It was available on the box set "Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974", disc 8. c1MBUEBHzmo When you hear it with better fidelity, it's also one of the best bass sounds ever! Anybody know who's playing bass on this one? / Tony giginthesky May 4th, 2009, 08:50 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y88OLJaOixk pino palladino's solo on "murder". Sl8e May 5th, 2009, 09:05 PM is that neil schon with stanley?!? Looks more like Howard Stern. carlos May 24th, 2009, 02:23 PM I always liked a lot this (fretless) bass line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOwZ1ilaJKc&fmt=18). By the way, there's also tele content towards the middle of the song |
