when I was a kid learning to play bass, you HAD to learn how to play this lick.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6KDO_yCYcuU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6KDO_yCYcuU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>#
what made it so essential was that you could impress your fellow musicians with your skill and knowledge of Megadeth while simultaneously impressing the non-musican/metalheads with your ability to play "that song from MTV news"... "MTV news. You hear it (insert riff)... first."

from 1:30 you can hear the 'solo' which is essential the line played through all the verses too. Easy to learn and a good one to start off with.

I just remembered another one: Hysteria by Muse (warning, contains heavy mainstream rock)

The first thing I ever heard and thought "now THAT'S a cool line!" (about age 9, didn't actually know it was a bassline then) was Silly Love Songs by McCartney.

My fav is still John Entwhistle's solo in my Generation. I still can't play it right
so it sounds proper. Interesting clip here:

All great licks guys but do you remember your first lick ?????

Mine was "Black Magic Woman" and I had to learn it quickly when I volunteered to switch from trombone to bass in my HS jazz band.

i dont play bass, but i think the opening bass riff (well actually it goes thru the entire song) in Hysteria by Muse is pretty sweet. Also the bass riff in Summer Skin by Death Cab for Cutie is pretty sweet.

The bass in Slow Drip Lizard by The March Violets is one of my favourite bass lines.

Anything by Bill Laswell or Mick Karn is pretty high up my list as well.

Jah Wobble's bassline in PIL's Poptones is my all time favourite. However according to the guitarist Keith Levene, he wrote it and told Wobble how to play the line.

Macca- "Rain", "Hey Bulldog"
Bootsy Collins, Parliament ( I think)- "Do that Stuff" ( the "I wanna go back" part)
Carol Kaye- Good Vibrations intro
Pretty much everything Duck Dunn played at Stax

Back in the sixth-grade whenever it rained and we couldn't go out for recess we would pull out the "class record-player" and spin a few tunes on it. I played "Supernaut" from Black Sabbath's Volume 4 over and over. I still love it all these (close to 40) years later.

I'll second Jack Casady's into to "The Other Side of This Life" from "BIPLH"...

ltyjNjsz8UU

What is really interesting is that this is the only time I've ever heard it played this way. I've got dozens of versions of Casady intro'ing the tune from live concerts, etc., and saw them many times back in the day...
But I have never heard it played even remotely like this version...

Which is one of the coolest bass riffs I've ever heard...

I'm confused...are we talking about RIFFS or SOLOS?

But I'll say that my favorite bass lines are (in no particular order):
1. "All Right now" by Free
2. "N.I.B." by Black Sabbath
3. "We gotta get out of this place" by The Animals
4. A Stevie Wonder song from the '70s. I don't know the title, but the bass line into just kills for @ 15 seconds before the Stevie's keyboard kicks in.
5. "Whipping Post" by the Allman Brothers Band
6. "Roundabout" by Yes
7. "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by Taste of Honey
8. "Freakout" by Chic
9. "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith
10. "Jet City Woman" by Queensryche

FranchelB, I'd guess that your number 4 there is "I Wish", and it is a gem. I took me hours to learn the tab, then re-learn it in Eb, then tune back to pitch...Like so many Stevie Wonder tunes, it's in Eb, which is apparently a favorite keyboard key...I think this is it:

Oops. I dun messed up. The 1st post said "Geddy Lee Solo" so that's why I posted a solo.
For easy and classic funk Riff I'd like to suggest " Thank you" Sly and the Family Stone.

I guess I will add more of my personal favorites.

First on my list is Jack Bruce's line from "Crossroads". This song convinced me to pick up a bass and is proof that bass is no easy instrument.
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Cm3Er3F51cA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Cm3Er3F51cA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

I really dig the bass line from Miles Davis' "So What". It may be a stand up, but it sure rocks!
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P4TbrgIdm0E&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P4TbrgIdm0E&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

"Time" by Pink Floyd, while an easy line, sure is sweet and is the essence of how great and essential bass can be even when kept simple.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ntm1YfehK7U&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ntm1YfehK7U&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Lastly I have always digged the line from Sublime's 5446/Ball and Chain. Cool reggae rock vibe.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UZue9XUe_aE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UZue9XUe_aE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Meshell Ndegéocello's bass line on John Mellecamp's cover of "Wild Night" by Van Morrison.

Sir Paul's bass on "You Can't Do That".

Yep, Stevie's "I Wish" cranks.

Benny Rietveld's line on "Smooth" by Rob Thomas & Santana makes me smile.

The sound sucks, but this is a killer tune, with a great bass riff.
It was available on the box set "Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974", disc 8.

When you hear it with better fidelity, it's also one of the best bass sounds ever!
Anybody know who's playing bass on this one?

I always liked a lot this (fretless) bass line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOwZ1ilaJKc&fmt=18). By the way, there's also tele content towards the middle of the song
