For most Guitar routing, the Dremel is pretty much a Toy...the New Bosch Colt Laminate trimmer is a real nice unit IMO

I use an old Makita laminate trimmer for all my cavity routing. I put a large base on it so I can span a large opening without it tipping.

Trimmer, personally and ymmv, I have found a dremel useless for the stuff I've done.

So, do you find a laminate cutter better than a good old router for cavity work?

I have a craftsman laminate trimmer that is just awesome. It has a working LED light which makes it very nice to route pickup routes, and comes with a larger base with handles. I find it better than a router because it routes cavities just as well as my full size router, and its smaller and easier to handle.

I only use my dremel as an engraver. Like you, I find it fairly useless, except for carving y name or pictures into my wood working.

I have a ryobi cordless trimmer. It's actually pretty powerful for being cordless and a ryobi. This photo is shown without the battery.

A dremel is not a router... it is the wrong tool for routing cavities or shapes.... but it is very handy for many tasks when using the little sanding drums and cut off wheels. Try cutting a slot in a control plate with a laminate trimmer...

Ideally you need one of each.

I have the Bosch Colt and it's an awesome tool. Lots of power and very compact, I use it just as much as a full size router. The dremel is for light detail work. It's like comparing a drill to a jackhammer.

I learn something new every day , or is that something else that I've already forgotten at my age ?
