Hi all !

After being a regular on this forum for some time ,I decided to share with you my progress on 53' Tele inspired build.

During the build I relied heavily on plans posted here by TDowns and eHawley.
Thanks guys!

Considering my "workshop camera went dead on me I use cellphone for the pics, meaning ,some pics are statisfying an most are poor quality"
I do have SLR but it goes nowhere near the shop

Off we go!

First selecting the wood;I found medium heavy ash with a nice grain, wide enough to fit whole body on it.

I decided to build two necks at the same time.

One is built according to Ehawley's Broadcaster plans, and the other is to be a carbon copy of a real life Tadeo Gomes '53 neck.
I'll probably use basball bat Broadcaster neck because I do have big hands
TG neck will be in reserve if i screw up main neck along the way.
If they both come out right TG will probably go on a TeleHot Rod 52
With a mini humbucker ona the neck.

As far as the pickguard is concerned I dont have the way of getting bakelite for a reasonable price here where I live so i decided to fake it.
I used black PVC which I'll fine wetsand and cover it with a coat of nitro.
It will have to do untill i obtain some bakelite.

As far as the Butterscotch finish is concerened, this is the point where things took unexpected turn.
I did some testing

But the body turn out bit more on the yellow side that it's supposed to.

After some brainstorming between me ,my friends and a more than few beers I decided to leave it like that.Who knows maybe the yellow dye will fade out eventually.

Actually they were cut out of the same board.
After searching for the Ash for some time i got this for free from a friend

As I said earlier I've been doing some frettin'.
This time i tried pressing method instead hammering I did so far.

I made fret press extension for a table drill.
Cost of making it was ,umm... around 3 $

cowl is made of floor laminate and for the extension i dissasembled a carpenter clamp.

What can I say it's a piece of cake work. Most of all frets are evenly pressed.

One more quick-fix fixture,a radius block with a file clamped on the side.
It looks clumsy but it does the fret trimming job flawlessly.

This is the point where some legal issues may occur.
I had Logo screen printed directly on the headstock.
A friend works in that kind of industry so there was no problem.
Some may say that the real problem is what is written on the logo.

Let me just say that both necks will stay with me and are not intended to be sold now or ever. I just stick with one proverb that says :
"Plagiarism is the most most sincere way of admiration"
As soon you see the picture ,You'll realise what am I yaping about.

The only tool I used today was screwdriver.
Only thing left to do is put in the pickups and setting up the guitar.

A friend is yet to wind me a couple of mean 50's pickups.
My guess is that I'll have them by monday.
In the mean time I'll do setup.

Me again

After some time and some builds non-related to Telecasters,I'll finally put an end to a chapter that I left open almost a year ago.

Back then I decided to build two necks at the time and was left with this:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1777/dsc01104hq4.th.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/i/dsc01104hq4.jpg/)

Lower one was built up to specs posted here by E.Hawley(broadcaster neck)
and upper one was built according to the dimensions taken directly from Tadeo Gomez neck from '53.
There is a subtle difference,TG headstock has a slight kink on the lower side.
(About the logo-strictly for the my personal use.If the guitar is ever is gonna be sold logo comes off)

However Broadcaster neck is in use for almost a year very succesfully, and
now it is time for TG neck to be put to use

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/7963/01131n.th.jpg (http://img188.imageshack.us/i/01131n.jpg/)http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/3693/01132.th.jpg (http://img697.imageshack.us/i/01132.jpg/)http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/613/02112.th.jpg (http://img704.imageshack.us/i/02112.jpg/)
I decided to tune up the guitar a bit :-)
Hence the mini humbucker on the neck (Hot Rod 52 style)
I didnt know how the mini humbucker route looks like so i improvised.
For the time being ill put some noname alnico mini, and later when I get me some cash I'll put in SD mini.

Or should I say primer time :-)

There's a visible spalt on the front side of the body, but I decided to leave it like it is.I'm thinking blonde finish will conceal it to some extent.

Body has been treated with primer and sanding sealer.
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/8344/02213.th.jpg (http://img87.imageshack.us/i/02213.jpg/)

Now the fun starts.
First comes mixing the butterscotch base(5%white in clear sanding sealer)
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2646/02212y.th.jpg (http://img94.imageshack.us/i/02212y.jpg/)

And now... easy on the paintgun trigger
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2646/02212y.th.jpg (http://img94.imageshack.us/i/02212y.jpg/)http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/4894/02214.th.jpg (http://img189.imageshack.us/i/02214.jpg/)

I decided to go very easy on the translucent white,in order to expose grain a bit more than it should be. Guess I just want so skip few decades of waiting the grain to expose itself

Talking about butterscotch, last time i missed the color big time but this time,
i think that i may just got it right. Here's the test.Little particles are there because of non filtered paint.

I like your logo. I do not believe anyone needs to apologize for the Fender logo on their builds. After all, it is Leo Fender's design. In writing, if you don't credit the originator of a quote or piece of information you are wrong. So you have given credit to the designer and credit to the builder in a tasteful way. Good job.

I really like the paint on your second guitar. What did you do different?

In the second paint job i tried to minimize human factor in mixing the colour

Recently i found hardened 30+ years old nitro lacquer.

I dissolved it in thinner and filtered it.

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/8033/02208.th.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/i/02208.jpg/)http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5514/02209.th.jpg (http://img15.imageshack.us/i/02209.jpg/)http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9461/02210.th.jpg (http://img228.imageshack.us/i/02210.jpg/)

I dissolved it in thinner and filtered it.
It is responsible for the blonde effect

That looks like something out of a horror movie! Glad that you could put it to good use!

Nice work on these guitars. You have the 50's look down pat.

This is a bit outside the 50s parameters as far as the paint job is concerned
but I'll put it here anyway.

Im currently well underway of building Jimmi's Woodstock white strat, but untill
hardware arrives ,man's got to keep himself occupied.

I found n the workshop a plank of maple 30+ yrs old, with wild grain, and thought
that it might be interesting to build a neck out of it.It won't be classic 50s neck
since i did it with white trussrod plug on te headstock side.I was thinking of making matching headstock in solid color.

However,on the profiling ,i went Tadeo taper

Hi all!
Just wanted to share few pictures of my newest build.
Just asembled it this mourning.

Some pictures of bulding process

http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/8586/02887.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/203/02887.jpg/) http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1725/02888.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/198/02888.jpg/) http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3005/02889.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/146/02889.jpg/) http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/5199/02894.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/204/02894.jpg/) http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/3170/02898.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/02898.jpg/) http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/5313/02899.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/210/02899.jpg/)

I went for contoured body because it was a bit on a heavy side and I didn't want to dismiss it because of a nice grain

For a primer I use shellac. It seals the wood nicely and prevents excessive
soak-in of the sanding sealer.

Ther was some baaad genetic manipulation with this one :mrgreen:

Actually inspiration came from 3 different Tele's:

Jeff Beck '54 Esquire
Merle Haggard signature Tele
Danny Gatton Tele

Obviously it doesn't look like any of above, but I've built this one having those 3 in mind.

Very nice work and you have excellent taste in finishes and colours. Even if the '53 is a bit dark, the colour it turned out is lovely.

Smart thinking with the logo's, Fender might not approve, but it's a great way to keep an authentic look without getting caught up in the "faking and misleading" arguement.

Thanks !

About the logo: I've given up Fender spahgetti part completely.
I still use Telecaster, but i think that's also gonna change in future builds.
I had too much talk about logo, more than about the guitar so I decided to
let it go .

Here's an update.

I just got back from a friend ,we had few glasses of wine ,talked about guitars & stuff, and in the mean time he took my new tele for a spin.

When I finally found my camera and set it to motion the moment was almost gone. Here is the end.

Pickup position is neck, in humbucker mode ,and the amp is Blackheart HD(moded)
