IrishMail February 13th, 2009, 10:27 PM Scatter Lee's got WOOD (and vice grips!).
Scatter Lee February 14th, 2009, 12:11 AM This wood was givin to me yesterday, dont know what it was, real rough cut, 54"x11 1/2"x1 5/8", old piece, not warped, looked cool
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5333.jpg
not big enough for a one piece so I cut it 7" wide for a two piece with a old power saw
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5335.jpg
found an old computer desk in the corner and used a piece for a straight edge, used router to cut me a straight line
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5337.jpg
used a 1 1/2 " bit to cut 1 5/8" , took a couple of passes but it worked
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5341.jpg
Scatter Lee February 14th, 2009, 12:17 AM http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5342.jpg

Scatter Lee February 15th, 2009, 01:11 AM Nice neck jigs!

well I had a 1/4" piece of maple to fill it but broke my 1/4" router bit, so used 3/8" bit,, didnt have table saw near to cut new one plus i would like to use walnut anyway and have none here, so it can wait till final sanding, and the last couple necks I did I popped out the skunk stripe when I was tapping in the frets, so i just wait till the frets are in and glue it up then do the final sanding
ehawley February 15th, 2009, 08:35 AM ...Lookin' great!!! The mind at work! The things you can build with "stuff" around the house !!!! Fantastic thread!

Lathem February 15th, 2009, 07:27 PM Every time I read one of these low-tech build threads I feel like an emasculated, 10-thumbed klutz. But humility is good for the soul.
Well done. I can't wait to see the rest.
HarpJim February 15th, 2009, 10:12 PM I must admit, I'm jalous, you're so talented! I wish I had 1/2 of your skills!!
I'm quite impressed by your planner. Did you use a regular 1/2" router bit to plane the whole piece of wood?

I have one question. On your truss rod.. after the build what do you use to tighten it??? is it slotted for a straight screw driver??? philips???
Factory uses an alan wrench what does yours use???
i use a slot type screwdriver
Cajun1 February 16th, 2009, 10:55 PM Wow! I consider myself a pretty good woodworker, but that is some amazing work. Obviously you've done this several times! By the way, I'm new here but I've already learned a ton! Again, excellent work! I can't wait to see all these $100 tele's when they are finished.
Douglas Ingram February 17th, 2009, 12:17 AM That sure looks like Fir to me. And I really like the radius jig, so simple and so effective.

Mark-00255 February 17th, 2009, 01:37 AM I like that locale you've got! Nice set up - love the old pool as well!
Makes me think of the interview a while back with Brett Favre's dad before he passed - sports radio guy is asking some questions and after a few minutes Mr. Favre says, "Well, gotta go, snake just crawled in the house!" He lived in Mississippi somewhere in the swampland.
It's pretty tame up here in the Northwest, by comparison!

XinTX February 17th, 2009, 01:26 PM You know, I used to think that making a neck would be too much of a PITA to try. This has me thinking perhaps it isn't that difficult after all. You make this look easy.
robt57 February 17th, 2009, 01:58 PM like to use walnut anyway and have none here, so it can wait till final sanding,
If you PM me your address and I will send you a few pieces of black walnut for skunks in a poster tube.

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice you glued the truss route plugs in on the second page until after I typed this message.

A question about the neck radius jig, how did you go about determining the radius? I could figure it out myself, but it you've already done the head scratching...
Nice to see another painter building guitars.

Scatter Lee February 19th, 2009, 12:26 PM What is the wood on that darker brown one? I've been wondering that for a few days.
that was a 2" thick board I found as a shelf in a storage shed, it was black dirty and full of wood bee tunnels, and full of dead bees, I used it in three bodys, the full body has been coated with sanding sealer, the one with it in the middle is the raw sanded color, has a cedar type smell but I dont think it's cedar, someone told me may be cypress? really dont know, weighs about 7 lb's, it has a real nice orange/red silk sheen to it when cleared

That bench looks like pressure treated pine to me. I don't think you want to use that for a body.

Fatmanstratman February 21st, 2009, 08:25 AM I'm a late-comer to these "$100 Telecaster Challege" threads, but I sat down earlier and read all five pages of this particular one from start to finish.
I have just managed to pick my jaw up from off my desk.....
Incredible ingenuity, craftsmanship, patience and perseverence - and all wonderfully photographed and documented for our shared learning and pleasure. The attention to detail throughout is just incredible.
Scatter Lee, I salute you, sir - this is a most fascinating and inspirational thread.....
I would be PROUD to own a guitar like this one - and I would feel truly blessed if I had even just a small fraction of YOUR skills.
My heart-felt thanks for all your efforts so far - I am in awe.....
Ironwolf February 21st, 2009, 08:52 AM A fast question for you, SL. What kind of paint/finish did you use on the body?

Me, I got this. Really, walked across the road on Jan 31 and this was the view. Oh well, it will be warm on day...
Hey, for that bridge. How thick is the metal? Your bridge build has got me thinking about making my own. I've got some 1 mm brass sheet stock that could work...

Greg M February 22nd, 2009, 07:32 AM This is the most detailed and informative guitar build thread I have seen yet. People (including myself) will be visiting this one for ideas for years to come.
Scatter Lee, you are a true craftsman and artist. You turn "making do" into "making perfect" and inspire me to see pieces of scrap and castoff metal as parts in waiting. I see a tele and think "Why buy one when I can make one". You see a tele saddle or bridge and think the same. Fantastic!
This is the second $100 tele thread that I have read but I can't imagine anyone topping it. Congratulations on a great build.
fisherbim February 22nd, 2009, 12:54 PM looking forward for the paint job...this is great sir...
Scatter Lee February 22nd, 2009, 01:19 PM started today by going thru some old sandpaper
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5773.jpg
pulled some good stuff
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5774.jpg

http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5776.jpg
and now I need a control plate, found this old table saw part

Scatter Lee February 22nd, 2009, 01:24 PM measured it out and started hacking it up

to draw it up you can use these fancy things

or just trace a hammer head

Scatter Lee February 23rd, 2009, 07:06 PM well today I got out the old airbrush stuff and put together two good working airbrushes out of three
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5813.jpg
had to clean three jars and lids that had three year old paint in them
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5814.jpg
set up the old antique easel
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5816.jpg
sprayed black, white lacquer from the can into the jars and filled one with lacquer thinner
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5818.jpg
and I'm ready to go
Scatter Lee February 23rd, 2009, 07:11 PM and it went something like this
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5820.jpg
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5819.jpg

And those old airbrush's are to Die For!
(wonder if you can still get parts for them)
voided3 February 23rd, 2009, 11:27 PM I think you're out of the competition now with the addition of that artwork because the guitar's value just went up $1,000!
Seriously though, if every $100 guitar Tele looked like that and was built to this standard, there would be a lot more money in our pockets saved from not having to buy those expensive Affinity Teles.

I'll take one in Swamp Ash, painted red with Jessica Rabbit on it
midnightblu February 24th, 2009, 11:52 AM Wow

bluzjamer February 24th, 2009, 02:40 PM I don't Post much on here, but Scatter you humbeled everyone out there and not just on this forum. If you do this for fun, I have to wonder what you do when you get serious. I'm in my late 50's and still ride but never had a tank like that one, when I want a $100 tele I go to the Rondo site and find a SX I can mod. I just have to say Bravo, thanks for sharing. You should write a book.

Fatmanstratman February 24th, 2009, 02:41 PM Scatter Lee, I keep reading through this thread and I'm trying really hard to avoid constantly posting things like "Wow! Incredible stuff - beautiful workmanship - fantastic build thread....."
However....
Wow! Incredible stuff - beautiful workmanship - fantastic build thread.....
Keep it up, Scatter Lee! I reckon that someone should get together with yourself, Buckocaster and martyb1 and put together the most amazing book on "Building Your Own Telecaster". I would be proud to buy the very first copy....
Scatter Lee February 24th, 2009, 06:54 PM Thanks for all the kind replys, Everybody!
now , another day , another dollar
today I did frets, set up the fret jig
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5854.jpg
it's marked, easy to use
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5851.jpg
do I cut the slots with a hacksaw, oh god no, but it does mark the spot for me to hand saw
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5852.jpg
like so
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5860.jpg
Scatter Lee February 24th, 2009, 07:05 PM this saw is a 6" handle that i cram a 5" scrollsaw blade into,
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5863.jpg
it cuts just the right depth, i can feel the blade with finger tip, when the blade just goes under the top of the wood it's right, but a little to thin for frets
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5868.jpg
then i use this saw that cuts the right width, you can feel when you hit the bottom
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5871.jpg
it gets the job done
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5867.jpg
Scatter Lee February 24th, 2009, 07:09 PM http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5872.jpg
I like to use big fat frets but these were a cheap ebay buy so...
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5861.jpg
sometimes I put a little glue in the slot with an old e string
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5873.jpg
like so
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5875.jpg
Scatter Lee February 24th, 2009, 07:12 PM set the fret in
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5876.jpg
set the hammer'n block on
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5877.jpg
tap tap tap
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5880.jpg
and do that 21 times
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5881.jpg
Scatter Lee February 24th, 2009, 07:18 PM not quit flush cut cutters
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5882.jpg
but close enough
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5886.jpg
lookin good
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5887.jpg
then I stare out the window for awhile
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5891.jpg
Scatter Lee February 24th, 2009, 07:23 PM then I file the edges
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5892.jpg
then sand the edges, I think I used 220, thats what I had on hand
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5893.jpg
with a little wood sanding block
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5895.jpg
ok
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5896.jpg

done
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5901.jpg
then I whip out the ol half pencil
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5902.jpg
and set'er on the top two frets
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5903.jpg
BlueRob February 24th, 2009, 07:28 PM Perfect! as usual....every detail done!

teletwin February 24th, 2009, 10:08 PM Awesome. I've been waiting to see that neck completed.
This thread has it all...guitars, tools, a hot chick, wildlife and a bike.
Anyone know what kind of falcon that was in the earlier pics?
Douglas Ingram February 25th, 2009, 12:50 AM If this were a Gretch thread, it woulda been a White Falcon!
chrism8922 February 25th, 2009, 01:35 AM
Wow. I was going to start a thread with pics of my new scratch neck build, but now I'm too embarassed! Once I saw this I decided to make some cookies and watch the magic happen.
This is unreal...

mkorsmo February 25th, 2009, 10:40 AM So my mornings have been going something like...
Wake up -> bring up TDPRI -> check this thread (and the others) -> then go about my business...
This is way to much fun to watch. Thanks for the time you've spent documenting the process.
GEISHA February 25th, 2009, 10:53 AM I am amazed by this workmanship, simply 10/10 top notch!!!!!!!
Sorry to say that I really dislike the paintbrush, it puts a cloud over the genius simplicity of the guitar itself, it does not belong to such a fine musical instrument.
Just my 2 centavos.
ehawley February 25th, 2009, 11:53 AM You are one talented dude! A regular McGyver! Beautiful work on all fronts!! (even the "Tele-caster"!) Florida always had big bass!
Cheers

Cajun1 February 25th, 2009, 01:43 PM  In-freakin'-credible! Scatterlee, you have got me wanting to head out to the shop and give a try at building my own. Maybe one of these days. Excellent work!
Scatter Lee February 25th, 2009, 03:51 PM You are one talented dude! A regular McGyver! Beautiful work on all fronts!! (even the "Tele-caster"!) Florida always had big bass!

Phaze February 25th, 2009, 07:00 PM What outstanding ingenuity! Great build, great pics!
This makes me think that at this moment I've got enough crap in the back of my pick-up truck to make 1.5 Telecasters.
Speaking of pick-ups, Scatter, whachugonnadoo? Re-use an old doorbell?
mojocasterman February 25th, 2009, 07:45 PM This is amazing. Down right amazing.
jays0n February 26th, 2009, 12:08 AM Love those shots of the Frets, almost as much as the shots of the bridge, almost. But then the paint and more home made jigs and tools. As others have said, it is really hard to read this thread for me as I want to keep posting the same "Amazing" over.
Jazzmasterfan February 26th, 2009, 06:05 AM I'm pretty new here and am overwhelmed by this thread. It's absolutely amazing. Keep up the great and inspiring work Scatter Lee.
Runn3r February 26th, 2009, 07:57 AM ...a most enjoyable thread Scatter Lee
...homebrew bridge is a super idea which i shall have to emulate and the paint job just perfect imo...tht part is far too hard for me and you have made it look simple
...outstanding skills
KennyH February 26th, 2009, 10:36 AM Outstanding work, Scatterlee on both the build an the thread.
I love how you just do things, no if or buts you just get on and do it. You don't explain it like we're all stupid instead you let the pic's do most of the explaining.
That aint an easy thing to do, I tried it with my saga build but the pic's just weren't up to the explanations. Mind you I do get carried away and forget to take pic's.
Top work, man!
KevinB February 26th, 2009, 11:38 AM Scatter Lee, you are a maniac! And I mean that with the utmost respect! This build thread is just stunning.
Scatter Lee February 26th, 2009, 10:20 PM THANK AGAIN, EVERYBODY

Scatter Lee February 26th, 2009, 10:24 PM http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5947-1.jpg
that wasnt so hard
http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr17/shanesby/101_5948.jpg
