teleman4u February 4th, 2009, 01:48 PM I'm helping a friend mod his tele and we're looking at going with a standard set from either Lollar or Fralin. I know there are MANY options out there.
But, out of these two, what do you guys recommend? I am not that familiar with Tele pickups.
Thinking Lollar Special T set vs. Fralin's Blues Specials or any set you guys weould recommend...Lollar Vintage T, Fralin Stock????
benbo February 4th, 2009, 05:15 PM Both are great guys who make very nice PU's. I lean more toward Jason Lollars though, just something very sweet about them. Lindy if you read this, sorry about that:oops:
BritishBluesBoy February 4th, 2009, 05:19 PM Both make some of the best pickups available. You'll be more than happy with either.

Yep, some of the best guitar players, and some of the best guitar builders, rely on pickups from both guys. I'm sure you can't go wrong with either.

OOoohhh you traitor from VA:lol:
I can tell you Lindy does not read the forums so you are saved.
As far as quality I am sure they are equal.
I would go with the Fralins (even though I don't have any:twisted:)
just because he is one of the coolest, laid back, intelligent person I have met in this highly competitive business. Again, my own HO
tonebro February 4th, 2009, 09:21 PM +1 on Lindy's pups...hell +10! Been usin' and sellin' em for about 13 years now. Good folks in his shop and he and his pups are great. But, Jason ain't Lindy and Lindy ain't Jason. Just like Fender ain't Gibson, etc. As the boys stated, you won't be let down with either!
Laundromat February 5th, 2009, 09:18 AM For a strat set I would probably go for Lindy or Lollars.
But for tele I would turn to Don Mare, that man really seems to know his telecasters.
mkern February 5th, 2009, 09:54 AM +1 for Fralins
Muddybuchfan February 5th, 2009, 10:09 AM Buy from Don Mare the first time and you won't have to buy another set later!
teleman4u February 5th, 2009, 12:27 PM I know all about Don and have talked to him on the phone...awhile back. Still, I've not heard any persuading clips. Plus, I'm not buying, my frined is and $$ is an issue. Ever see any used Mare's?
graphs February 5th, 2009, 01:09 PM Occasionally a single or set turn up used. Don's pickups pretty much go in and then stay in.
But between Lollar and Fralin it's a tough choice. Both are great, can't lose with either.

Forget the brand for a second and concentrate on the vintage wind vs. overwind issue. That's personal preference, no wrong answer to that question. Hotter winds lose some highs end and are stronger in the mids. I'd expect more difference that way than in the Lollar vs. Fralin issue.
If it were my project, I would be looking for the vintage wind. I've always been happier with that. I would then watch ebay, classified ads, etc for either Lollar or Fralin in my price range. Get whichever brand comes up first, both of these guys have big-time reputations, and you won't know any more than that until you personally actually play the pickups.
Keep in mind that if you buy a popular item at a fair market used price, you ought to be able to sell it the same way if you don't like it.

OK OK, Don't run me out of town LOL. Both make fine PU's, both are great guys, Listen to clips and pick whats best for you......Now thats better now aint it:wink:
I have met Lindy, spent a few hours at his shop talking PU's and guitars, He showed me some of his guitars, told me the story about when he got his amp designed and had to go with another company due to just plain crazy mistakes etc... Lindy is a way cool guy and knows his stuff about PU's. And he does all his PU's in a fairly small shop. The only thing I would hate is having to go up and down the stairs all day if I had to go out...

I used stock tele Lindy Fralins with a four way mod in a solid swap ash with a flame maple top.. This guitar sounds amazing. I am making a series of five guitars each with a different set of pickups all with the four way mod. I am using Smits handwound country pickups in my second guitar. Tom Shorts in my third. Jason Lollar in my fourth. Torres in my fifth and Don Mare's in my sixth.
You can hear the Fralins at this link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWLzkJKKKsE
