Let's see if you guys can help me.

There's a live show called "Brothers of a feather" from Chris and Rich Robinson. Rich uses is Esquire in some songs and I can't see any pedals or effects going in front of the amp. The amp seems to be some Fender Hot Rod:

(the image is taken from the DVD)

but it doesn't sound like any Hot Rod I ever heard. It has some "tweed caracter" on it.
I can get close with my modded Champ 600 through a 1x12", but not with that amout of "grit".

Does anyone has some info on that amp?

If you don't know the album, go get it. It's one of the most amazing sound I heard from an Esquire or tele bridge PU.

5e3 maybe? If you've ever seen the youtube of them playing "By Your Side" that's what he's using with the esquire. Great tone!

I saw the Black Crowes a few weeks ago and Rich was using 2 65 London half stacks and some rack gear. I just got a copy of his Paper CD and his tones are much heavier/thicker than just a plain jane 5E3 IMO. If you peruse his website he lists all of his gear (not what he uses on each track though). I am getting similar tones out of a neck humbucker in my tele and a Sovtek Midget 50 with the gain upped a fair bit through a 4x10 cab. My playing sounds like ****e but the tone is there!

He did have a pair of them (see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA_Q19HFQig), but I don't believe that's one. Maverick is selling one of them now.

I can't recall what that is, but I'm digging...

Don't know about that particular amp, but I really like the sound of his Harry Joyce amps.

I like his sound with every one of his amps, but there's something about that particular sound that I love.

If anyone as some more info about it, please share.

Are you sure they were Londons? I saw him on Letterman with Royal Alberts. If he were using the Londons for smaller venues, I'd have thought he would have used them on the Letterman set.

Here's a vid of that show. Does that sounds like a regular Hot Rod deluxe?

They could have been Royal Alberts, I wasn't close enough to see the control layout. Whatever 65 Amps they were they sounded really good, nice and thick but still coming through FOH with punch!

Yeah, that's a Hot Rod Deluxe.

Strange cause I've played with one that didn't sound anywhere near this good!

I have to play it again...

It looks like a Hod Rod Deluxe. I´ve played some HR Deluxes and you can sound like that on the clean channel, cranked up and using the volume and tone knobs.

I've tried to crank the amp up but it's so bright sounding that I gave up!

I'll talk to my buddy who owns one to try it again with my CV.

I know he's used headstrongs. Do they have any amps with those cosmetics?

Cheers,
Geoff

I saw him early in December here and his tone was crazy good.

When he used his ES 355 he had as good an electric guitar tone as I've ever heard.

He did have those "65" amps back there but I thought I spied a Marshall or two as well.

Thanks for your inquiry!
I believe that amp is a Hot Rod Deluxe (Fender) actually..A rental at that!
I guess the tone is in his hands...Was there a tone you were in search of?
Thank you for your interest in our company

Yup. He's definitely playing A HRDX. I've played mine since 1999 (early model built in USA) and it sounds real good, far from 'bright'...original speaker broken in gets a real sweet tone. These amps get some bad rap, but their pretty darn good IMO. I saw Jacob Dylan's new project play last night, and he was playing thru one as well. Sounded real good. Like the gentleman from Headstrong Amps mentioned, the amp is only a fraction of your overall tone. I am in search of a nice older PR, but in the meantime I am grateful I never sold my HRDX, which has crossed my mind a many of times.
