Garageband question...?

Hey guys,
I've been asked to record a couple of short tracks for an animated film a friend of mine is making and as I don't have a proper studio set up I'm using a USB mic into my Mac laptop and recording with Garageband. The problem I'm having is I keep getting odd static-y sounding clicking noises when I record. When I just play and listen through headphones it doesn't happen. I can't for the life of me think where they are coming from. Any suggestions...??

Typical - it's stopped doing it now! Maybe it was some interference from outside or the apartment next door...???

Weird.

I have had problems like that with a slow hard drive when my track counts started climbing....
