... or is the cover automatically grounded because it's attached to the pickup? Wasn't sure if I needed to run a separate ground wire for it, or if I need to solder the cover to the bottom of the pickup, etc.

The cover of a Tele neck pickup must be grounded. Usually, there is a little jumper wire on the bottom of the pickup, that connects a tab of the cover to the negative lead of the coil. This is sufficient, unless either you want to implement four-way switching (involving a series position) or the new neck pickup is out of phase with the bridge pickup.
