Hi
How much of a problem do you guys think it is to have staggered pups on necks with a 12" or more radius? Fender seems to do this a lot.

I'm no expert on pup design, but I was reading (somewhere) that the staggered pole design works most efficiently with 7.5" radius' and flat pole pups for flatter fret boards. Seems logical to me. But I guess you also have to factor in pup location to the bridge, string gauge, desired effect, playing style... you know... the usual suspects.
You know how the internet is... can't believe everything you read.

The A5 mags on my Anderson Strat pickups are staggered. Not a problem on the bridge and middle, but creates a ton of string pull on the D and G on the neck pup.
Probably not a problem on a Tele bridge pup.

Not a tele but I've just got an Ibanez SA serie, with staggered single coils and a neck with high radius (>12) fingerboard.
A pair of single coils is already ordered to replace the original ones; just impossible to have a balanced sound, especially in clean mode for soloing or rhythm work.
As Cole says above, it's quite logical...

I love the tone of the SD 54 but for years hated the pronouced D from the staggards on my 9.5 neck. That string totally over shadowed the rest although it did give a significant Bakersfield vibe to my playing. Just a little "overly" so.
Last year, I took a chance and filed the D pole down, very slowly, with some 200 grit sand paper. It took about 1/2 hour. Sure, it was risky. Those shavings could have ruined the pup. Or my fat fingers could have ripped a winding.
The result is that the pick up is "all that", and everything I wanted it to be in the guitar.

i used to have a flat-pole broadcaster style pup in my texas HW1 tele (12" radius). the d string was WAY quieter than the other strings. i had don mare wind me a pickup with a raised "d" magnet, and now the problem is solved-completely even volume from every string. i guess there are exceptions to every rule.

I had a real problem of string balance with my CP 60s strat (12'' radius) and the staggered Custom 69 pups. High E and B were very weak, while G string was too close to the magnet. I changed for a flat APS2 Seymour set, that made a big difference.
