Messing with my parts Stat

I have been having a problem of late with this particular strat I have. Made from licensed parts, mitey mite neck(excellant by the way), mitey mite pups(kind of suck really), and a solid alder body that cost me more than the squire strat I just bought off ebay.

Anyways put a loaded pickguard of mitey mite pups on it last week and removed the Kent Armstrong pups/pg. After doing so for some reason I have yet to fathom the string set looked way higher off the neck. So today it took more than a few hours of screwing around to get the strings back where they should be. ie) close to the fret board.

What I ended up doing is shimming the neck with a piece of cardboard off the back of a spiral notebook, and then shimming the nut with some 3.5 card. Next I had to readjust the floating bridge, saddles and go to slightly heavier strings. 10's instead of 9's. Finally have it down low with 0 buzz and the tremolo is working at the position it is supposed. PUPS still aren't the greatest but haven't gone back to the KA's which I am sure I will as they definetly have way more punch than the HSS mitey configuration I currently have on. It was definetly a learning experience. What I didn't realize is that you don't need to cover the whole neck pocket with the shim. What I ended up doing is putting right about the center of the pocket center of the holes. That's it, all is well is Stratsville. thanks

The shim goes either behind the rear screws, or in front of the front screws.

Putting it in the middle will cause the neck to develop a hump in it! You're bending the neck.

In your case, you need to put the shim behind the rear screws, nearest the neck pup.

Thanks for the info. Did as you suggested. Not quite as low as it was with the shim in the middle of the screws but I can mess around with it to get it where I want I think. Great info. thanks
