Hey Gang,
I just picked up a used Champion 600 the other day. It's a sweet little amp, as most here would agree. I'd like to change the 12AX7A tube, but I'm not sure about the metal cover over it. Does it twist off, or do I need to unscrew it? I know it's a dumb question, but I can see ripping the darn socket out with my luck!
Thanks!

Just pull the tube out.
Mine was pretty stuck because of the metal cover but I managed to take the tube out without any damage.

the metal cover, you have to push in and twist to disengage it. There's a little bump on it that sits in a slot on the base. Then you turn it about a quarter turn either left or right and it will pop right out.
Then as xjazzy says, jut pull the tube straight out.

Actually, they use some sort of epoxy to attach the tube cover and they are damned hard to get off the first time. After you break the glue seal, no ore problems.

Thanks Guys, That worked. Do you recommend keeping it on or off? I've never seen tubes covered like that before.

I usually keep the covers on since it should in theory keep down interference.
On my Champ 600 I really dont hear a difference so it I dont mind leaving it off. If it is off it is easier to loose and offers no protection for the tube if you are transporting the amp.

Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about the metal plate that is attached on the socket!
I took the cover out when I bought it and never got it back in the place, so I forgot it existed!
