hi guys,
i play a simple hybrid-style most of the time. banging the bass and picking some high strings. i also do that on a dobro and a slideguiatr with extremely heavy strings. sometimes the picking area of my middlefinger gets really sore. will that go away one fine day and will i develop a tougher skin there? i tried fingerpicks, but that is not working for me. any good ideas? eddie

I have calluses on my right hand fingers. I don't use heavy gauge strings.

If it doesn't go away after a few days, I'd try lighter strings.

hope they come soon. i hesitate to put lighter strings on the dobro, because it sounds so killer with the really heavy wires.

Since you're talking '"picking area", I'm assuming we're talking calluses and blisters... in other words, a bit of discomfort, as opposed to pain, as is associated with serious chronic hand health issues.

My personal hybrid picking issues are with the ring finger, not the middle finger. It's not a pain thing, it's a dynamics control thing. Try using a really good compressor, or perhaps a simple booster circuit.
