I got a AV '57 last week and I finally weighed it and was shocked to see that it weighed more than my Tele. It came in around 8 pounds 10oz. Are strats normally heavier than Teles?

No, they're not. There's quite a bit fewer cubic inches of wood in a Strat, so it tends to be lighter. But I bet there is a temptation to use heavier wood for a Strat you simply couldn't use for a Tele.

I hefted a MIK 'Lite Ash' Strat in Slidell a while back that was well over 10 pounds. Shocking.

Nope, Strats come in a wide variety of weights, just like Teles. The biggest difference IMO is that Strats hang better due to the extended upper horn.
