Personally, I have a Lakland Skyline 55-01 that I got in that ballpark pricing. Fantastic sounding and playing, well balanced at about 9 lbs. If you are new to fivers, you'll need to try a few to see how you well you like the string spacing and scale length. The Laklands are 35" scale and a bit wider string spacing that other fives I've tried. Used ones are on Ebay fairly often, go try one if you can, great value that can't be beat at that price.

Is the Fender Deluxe Active Jazz V modern enough for you? It's under $560 at Musiciansbuy.com.

Get a Mexican Standard Jazz 5 and put an Aguilar OBP3 preamp in it.

You won't be sorry.

You might check out this Tobias Toby Pro-5 (http://www.musicyo.com/news/toby_rev.asp).
I got ahold of a Toby Deluxe 4 and am amazed how nice it is! Very modern styling, well constructed, easy to play much flatter fingerboard than Fenders and sounds great.

This is a G&L Tribute L-2500, available new online for $599.99. Korean-made, but using U.S. MFD pickups and a passive/active/active + treble boost electronics scheme. Best of luck, CS

While I am waiting for a used tribby L2500 I purchased on the bay, I decided to do a search and found this old thread, lol.

Anyone care to share their experiences with this bass?

Nice. I prefer the 55-01 as a 5 'er for the wider neck. I had both for a while and strung the G&L E through C - that was pretty dang cool - I'm backsliding into 4 string only though... again... I just don't get a lot of use out of those extra low notes...

My fav tones form the L series G&L are the passive ones. The active ones leave me flat... try starting off at about .75 up on both treble and bass controls and adjust front there - that is to say rather than considering full up to the the norm. Consider 3/4ht's the way up and adjust your amp to that - then you get more bass (or less), more treble (or less) on tap at the bass....

I believe it was Ken Baker who turned me on to that approach.

Zombie thread, now closed. Better to start a new one on the same subject. -- CS
