Springsteen '78 Driver/Distortion

Anyone know what kind of box Bruce was using on the '78 tour between his Esquire and his Bassmans? I know a little later he used some kind of Nady driver (according to Musician magazine) but I've never known what he stepped on during the '78 tour. Whatever it was, it was sturdy, because he'd pound that sucka with his boot heel.

Don't think so. I could see it enough to know it was bigger than that, but not enough to figure out what it was.

A lot of the stuff Bruce used in the 70s was custom built or heavily modded by a guy named Phil Petillo, a luthier and electronics guru on the Jersey shore. I think he's in Ocean, NJ, if I remember correctly. Phil custom built pickups and preamps for Bruce's tele's as well as a treble booster/dist. unit for him, and I've been told he heavily modded pretty much every thing else Bruce was using at the time, including his amps. So basically that distortion unit could have been anything from an MXR dist pedal taken out of its box and put in something sturdy and probably modded, or maybe it was something entirely out of Phil's imagination. Who knows.
