I was just at a local music store and they had a 78' Strat that they said I had to play. I pulled it off the wall and nearly dropped it! It weighs 18.2 lbs.
They actually weighed it when it was brought in on consignment because it was so heavy. The wood is ash. On the bright side, it had wicked good sustain. Has anyone ever found a Strat heavier than this?

According to the old school guitar builder at the store it is just really heavy Ash. He said that during the bean counting CBS days, they stopped requiring the mills that supplied the wood to limit the wood to so many pounds per foot. The CBS bean counters saved some money this way ( and also gave many folks a hernia ). I guess you learn something new every day.

Eighteen pounds Two ounces?

Good lord, I'd have to be there and see it for myself. I know some of those are heavy. The body would have to weigh approximately 15 pounds with all the parts taken off. That is about 4 times as heavy as this 2 piece light ash body I just bought from Tommy at USACG, which is 3 pounds 10 ounces.

4 times as heavy. Mind ge-bobblin'!

I had one at my shop that from that era. I took it in trade from my amp repair guy. It was a trans-brown I guess. It was over 12 pounds but I'm not sure by how much. I wound up selling to my Ric rep.

18, man. That's a widow-maker.

I played a used ash olympic white Strat in the mid-seventies that was like a boat anchor. All this time I thought it was an oddball; guess not.
