Strings for slide

What strings do you use for slide on your acoustic? Brand and gauge. I'm starting to do a little more slide work, and I'm tuned to open "E".

Also, I'm thinking of switching my resonator over to open "E", so everything will be on the same page, but I'm having a hard time finding anything other than open "G" strings for it. Am I gonna have to create my own custom set for this?

Thanks...........Big Daddy Weed

I use regular (light) 12-54 strings on my resonator, which is tuned to open G 99% of the time. Conventional wisdom says that is too light but they work for me (with a light touch on the slide) and still allow for occasional fretting with the fingers.

I have been playing slide for over 40 years and pretty much stuck with brass wound strings. No particular brand - whatever I could get the cheapest.

The guage depended on the guitar (and how many nights I was gigging). About the lightest I have used would be 014 for the first with an unwound 026 for the 3rd (a trick I picked up from John Hammond).

Thanks guys, that's good info. I seem to have a lot of string noise, which I don't hear when playing slide on my electric. I know some of the noise is understandable, but I wondered if anybody was using flat wounds or round wounds.

Thanks again...........weedman
