1 Tone Knob Wiring

I'm trying to do a custom wiring on my 62 RI'. It's the vintage kind of wiring. What I want to do is wire all of the pickups to just one tone knob so I don't have to use the other one. I know that Rory Gallagher did it, and SRV had it on his Charley strat. That's initially what I want to replicate. Does any one have a diagram or know how to do this? :confused: Thanks

Still somewhat confused. I'm not a big tech on this stuff. Is there perhaps another diagram you can show me?

Make use of that redundant third pot!! Here's an easy mod that'll give you the Tele middle sound on Pos's 1 & 5 plus all three PUs on pos's 2 & 4. Seven sounds in total!

The master tone pot on a Strat is a great idea.
I wouldn't have mine any other way.
To be brutally honest, though...the first drawing is a very simple one.
If you can't figure it out, you're probably best off taking your guitar to a repair man.
I bet 20-25 bucks would get it done right.

I did that on my latest project, and just used a Nashville Tele wiring diagram. I can't remember exactly what it looked like, but it would be similar to the first diagram shown.

for myself i turn the tonepot to a greasebucket tonepot
takes away hight but ads no bass

The guitar I'm working on is a 62 RI made in Japan... so is something different? The wiring diagrams I am looking at show the master tone control reverse from what mine is. I'm wanting the first tone control as the master, not the second.

The best thing would be to follow the Seymour Duncan diagram in the post above. Just pick the pot you want to use as your tone pot and then remove the wire from the redundant one.

But if you are having any doubts the best thing to do would be to take it to a repairman. Better safe than sorry.

How much would that cost a tech to do? It seems to be a simple procedure even though I can't do it myself. :lol: That plus the cost of putting the pickups in?

As one can see, all the pots are 250k - standard master volume, NO-LOAD master tone w/.022uf cap, NO-LOAD neck pup blender.

It's important to use those no-load pots. In the case of the tone, not having a tone pot in the circuit will really fire up the tone of yer pups as yer playing volume increases. Imperative with the neck pup blender so that no trace of the neck pup signal leaks out when turned off.

My source for no-load Fender CTS pots has been back ordered for weeks, so I've gone back to modding standard CTS pots to no-load spex. It's really quite easy. Here's an online no-load pictorial by ProjectGuitar ...

Hello, Antigua....welcome..belatedly, but welcome.
Mulligan's post has all you need. Look at your circuit assembly in your guitar. Remove the wires that run from the switch to the tone pots. The potentiometer that is in the middle should look very similar to the one in Mulligan's post. The tone cap and the lead to the pot from the switch may be in opposite positions....no matter. IF you want to take the cap lead to the middle lug and the lead from the volume pot(this lead can be the wire that you disconnected at the switch and ran to this pot) to the outside lug, fine. IF you want to leave the cap lead on the outside lug and bring the lead from the volume pot to the middle lug, that's fine too. There is a bit of difference in what will go on, but both situations are workable.
Personally, if I were going to do this, I would move the volume away from the strings and put the tone pot in the 3rd hole a la Bill Carson. I hit that volume pot sometimes...it is a bit close to the strings for me at times. If the guitar has only these two controls, why not move them away that small distance?
