stinkymommasboy July 8th, 2008, 09:01 PM I have a '80 something fender princeton chorus (with 2 10's).
It says 125 watts on back panel but I was told it's alot less. Anyone know what the true wattage is?
stinkymommasboy July 8th, 2008, 09:12 PM I found this:
POWER OUTPUT: 25.5 Watts R.M.S. per channel = 51 Watts R.M.S.
Now what the heck is r.m.s. and does this mean I have 25 watts on the clean and 25 watts on the dirty channel?
winny pooh July 9th, 2008, 05:10 AM Maybe they mean that it has 2 seperate power amps into each speaker like any stereo amp. Does it have 2 speaker jacks?
You should just assume that its a 50 watter, keeping in mind that RMS in transistors and tubes equate to different volumes in the real world.
Tubes being louder of course

I would say yes. 51 watts OUTPUT rating.
125 watts is probably the INPUT rating.
BTW, I had one of those. It had 2 12 inch speakers...I think it said 65 Watts R.M.S. It was VERY LOUD!!!!

I believe it is 50 watts stereo output. The Princeton Chorus is probably the best solid-state amp that Fender ever made! The chorus is absolutely heavenly and the tone is very tube-realistic.

I believe you're thinking of the Ultimate Chorus. The Princeton Chorus was only equipped with 10" speakers, 25 watts rms per side. The UC was 65 watts/side with a pair of 12's.
The PC is a great sounding amp, but really doesn't have a ton of clean headroom. If you keep the gain down to a reasonable level, the OD channel sounds surprisingly tube-like.

+1 on the chorus... I keep looking for another one on the cheap. I had one back in the early 90's. What a lush chorus! I wish somebody made this chorus in a pedal.
I have no idea how loud the wattage rating is... RMS is basically the clean power rating. Solid state amps RMS rating is usually just about the max output volume, whereas tube amps usually begin breaking up and distorting long before reaching ten on the volume knob.
CatfishStudios July 9th, 2008, 04:34 PM I had this amp...a red knobbed version with 2 10's...I hated it and sold it. Decent clean channel..but the reverb was horrible. The chorus on clean channel gave good jazz tones..The gain channel was pretty much unusable. But pedals through the clean were very passable. If I remember..it has no speaker jacks..just speaker wires out of the chassis...a pair for each speaker..stereo ..125 watt said on back..also saw black knobbed princetons that say 100 watts on back..I always assumed it was +/- 60 watts per side....I sold it for 100 bucks.
stinkymommasboy July 9th, 2008, 08:42 PM Well I must have gotten a good one, cuz it sounds great clean or dirty. And it is surprisingly loud when it has to be. This is a red knobber with hardly any battle scars that was given to me by a friend who had it and doesn't play guitar. It does what I need it to do.
bluescube July 10th, 2008, 08:16 AM I miss the one I bought in 1988 for $250.......Then sold it because it wasn't tube.
I really miss that stereo chorus it had.
Stubbs July 10th, 2008, 08:55 AM I got one in the basement. It is my wifes old amp. She used to play her electric violin through it 15 years ago with our old band. It sounds great clean, the stereo chorus is awesome. I have never liked the gain section much though.
Bluesbob July 10th, 2008, 03:35 PM My son has a Princeton Chorus. I think it's one of, if not the, nicest solid state amps ever made, including the Rolands. It has a presence in the clean tone that I can't get with a tube amp, great chorus effects too. Just not very loud. Loud enough, though. He has Jensen Mod's in it, it stays cleaner with more headroom.
PhillyGTR July 10th, 2008, 04:51 PM I have this amp. My parents bought this for me when I was in HS in the early 90's. Pretty good amp. Great clean channel, sucky gain. It takes pedals really well. I play it with a Barber Small Fry & a T-Rex Comp Nova. Nice country blues tone.
BTW, why doesn't Barber, Menatone, Keeley etc. create SS amps with their circuits in them? I sort of wish I could gut channel 2 of the PC and put my Barber in there.
