JohnnyCrash July 8th, 2008, 08:05 PM After a bottle of wine, I got the bright idea of throwing a Shure SM57 in front of my 5E3 build.
It sounds nothing like it does when you're really in the room with it... so perhaps next time I will not close mic it with a SM57, instead maybe distance micing with a condenser. Maybe I'll spend a few moments actually micing it up properly too HAHA
Anyway here is a few short clips, one at half volume and one at full volume (Tone on 8), from the Normal channel's high input. I figured a Les Paul Junior's P-90 would be a good compromise for the Tele fans and the Les Paul/humbucker fans.
Don't mind the playing it was just a quick and dirty (and bottle of wine fueled) affair - I played chords so you can hear that, as well as a few single note lines - I just wanted a clip with the general character of the amp :)

The next clips will be done properly, with real micing and real playing :)
JohnnyCrash July 8th, 2008, 08:08 PM Wow... soundclick's "Lo-Fi" is all warbled and crappy sounding. Ouch.
Play the Hi-Fi one...
Also, these clips were stock 5E3 - maybe my next clips will be with the SS rectifier switched on and the cathode switch on (swaps the stock for a Marshall style cathode value).
pbenn July 8th, 2008, 08:17 PM I enjoyed those, Johnny.
zeeman July 8th, 2008, 09:46 PM Sweet, especially enjoyed the tip of the hat to Sabbath. Thanks for sharing.
chabby July 8th, 2008, 11:53 PM Excellent and enjoyable tones - thanks johnny
JohnnyCrash July 9th, 2008, 01:06 AM I sorta think they sound terrible.
Standing in the room with the amp blasting was incredible... hearing the recorded playback (now that the wine has worn off HAHA) sounds weak in comparison...
Better clips coming soon. Better playing AND better capture of the actual sound will be in store.
teleamp July 9th, 2008, 01:34 AM JC, you should get some micing inspiration from the Guytron GT 20, it has a built in mic.
JohnnyCrash July 9th, 2008, 04:54 AM I have a home studio which makes these clips even more embarassing :)
teleamp July 9th, 2008, 07:49 AM Hey, they sounded great, cut yourself some slack Johnny.
Looking forward to the AC30 with blues clips.
But, I am intrigued by the built in mic that Guytron uses.
59TweedVibrolux July 9th, 2008, 08:15 AM Great Stuff Sounds so much better than the Fender '57 Reissue 5E-3
Very much in the Originals "Tone Zone". Gotta love those P-90s..... Clarity,
Bark & Bite.
tele-martini July 9th, 2008, 11:06 AM Both Lo-Fi and Hi-Fi sounded fine on my computer here at work. With the limitations of crappy computer spkrs. the clips still sounded great. I hardly ever crank my 5E3 clone to 10 but hearing the second clip makes me want to go home and do so. I really enjoyed them.
What do you have for tubes in yours ,NOS or Modern ?
Gene
tele-martini July 9th, 2008, 11:09 AM Oh yeah, forgot to mention. If you get the urge to make clips featuring the SS rectifier version I would love to hear them!

Electro Harmonix 12AY7, JJ/Tesla 12AX7, ElectroHarmonix (Fender relabelled) 6V6's, and a Sovtek 5Y3 (that's why there's less sag).
Oh yeah, forgot to mention. If you get the urge to make clips featuring the SS rectifier version I would love to hear them!
I definitely will.
In these crappy clips you can hear the bass fart out a bit (you can also hear a sheet of copper rattling if you listen carefully to the fully cranked clip's ending). I guess it's not bad, it's part of the 5E3 sound.
I will be properly micing up the 5E3 again and making "proper" clips. Some in stock settings, some with SS rectifier and mid-shift (Marshall-ish cathodes) switches ON as well.
I will also be recording a few little clips of the new Vox AC30/15 build and Celestion Blues - though I'll likely do it in 15 watt mode... it's flipping loud!
Strat-O July 12th, 2008, 11:45 PM Aw man. Don't make all those excuses and apologies! Besides, the clips sound excellent and so does your tone! Thanks for putting these up. I think its cool.
bgood July 13th, 2008, 08:47 PM Johnny - nice clips. I like that fat sound.
I figured I'd pile on a bit. This is my 5E3 driven by a JV strat with a new Fralin 43 in the bridge. I think the amp is pretty much cranked and I may have a Bad Monkey in there too - I forget. I was really demo ing the pickup. Mine's a Mission with a Weber 12F125.
reverb added post recording. Zoom H2 set up about 4 feet away.
