i recently started playing through a 65 twin reissue{blackface} i bought used. the circut board says its a 2002. iam having a hard time getting that clean fender sound. i also have to have the volume up around 6/7 to keep up in the band. can this amp need new power tubes already? it has the orginal grove tubes in it. iam using the same chords i also used with my other amp before this one and had the same tone problems with it too. can a chord, or chords even though they work interfer with tone that much?the tone doesnt change much even if i bring the volume down. it has to come down to 2/3 before it cleans up and i can hear that chimey fender sound. i play mostly country and use pedals for any distortion needed.

Something may be wrong with it.

Take it to a repair shop and have them re-tube it and check it out. New tubes will require rebiasing as well, so the shop will have to do that for you too.

sounds like something's wrong. unless you're in dinosaur jr. you shouldn't have to turn a twin up that high to keep up. also, it should still be chimey, with just a hint of growl on the low strings. 6-7 is the sweet spot on a twin IMO. i;d say new power tubes or position 1 preamp tube is in order.

I own a 65RI from the late 90's and I had to have work done on it a year after I bought it. It is entirely possible that the tubes need to be looked at or the power section may need a gander.
You actually should be able to get that "clean sound" with plenty of volume around 3-4 so take it in.

I would have re tube first that should get it back to it's clean sound. If it doesn't then I would take it to a tech and have it check out.

2002....can this amp need new power tubes already?

6 years? I'd wager yes.

It should be clean and loud which is pretty much its trademark.

Teleray,
Another thing you may want to check out is the speaker cable. i had a wire running from the speaker jack to the speakers go bad in a combo amp ... it was the original wire, and I fixed EVERYTHING else, still had a "too quiet for the amp's power rating" sound. Finally stumbled on the problem trying out a different amp ... it was the darn speaker cable. Made a new one and the amp sounded fine, that's all it was.
best wishes

thanks for the suggestions. do i really"need "to rebias if i say, change to jj power tubes from the grove tubes? the reason i ask is they charge 50.00+ here to rebias. whats the worst that can happen if i just put the tubes in and go?

Well you can spend the $50+ on have tech do or buy a Weber Bias King (I forget how much they cost) and learn how to bias yourself.

Buy the Weber bias tool! Next time you change tubes it'll pay for itself. Biasing is really quite easy with the right tools!

You will need to at least check the bias when swapping tubes. Even if you were replacing GT's with GT's. JJ's can take a hotter bias than the GT's.
Better safe than sorry when playing with an expensive equipment, right?
