Nick88 July 4th, 2008, 05:42 PM Hi everybody!
I'm currently doing a nashville build with a twist - a humbucker in the neck.
I'm just reaching the finishing stages on the body, so thought it was about time to look into pickups and wiring.
At the moment i plan on buying three GFS pickups from guitarfetish.com :
The fatbody 10k overwound tele bridge pickup, (http://store.guitarfetish.com/alfa10kovteb.html)
The Fat pat boutique humbucker in the neck, (http://store.guitarfetish.com/alfatpafbohu1.html)
I am yet undecided about the strat pickup i'll put in the middle.
I'm looking for versatility, so i would like to have every pickup combination possible :
1. Bridge
2. Bridge + Middle
3. Middle
4. Middle + Neck
5. Neck
6. Bridge + neck
7. All 3 together
8. Anything else possible?
I'm guessing i'll need a push pull pot for the volume and/or a superswitch.
When it comes to wiring i'm proficient with a soldering iron, but dont understand what goes where and why. I always need a wiring diagram.
Does one exist, or is this just overly complicated or such a dumb idea that no one's thought of it?
If this can't be done, could someone point me in the direction of a standard 5-way with neck humbucker wiring diagram.
Sorry for the long / complicated post, and thanks in advance for any help,
Nick
robt57 July 4th, 2008, 05:58 PM I will say this about "every pickup combination possible". It is more likely in my opinon and experiecnce, that "every pickup combination possible" out of those 3 will have a lot more non useful tone than a different tact will net.
For example: Your "every pickup combination possible" schemata excludes shunting, phasing, series flip of the 2 coil pup at the bridge.
IMO, a few of these, and the combination of them with the other pickups would allow the guitar have more usable tones than your 'covering all the bases' by making sure every combination without playing with the HB 4 wire is possible.
Just my 2 cents.
porto leone July 4th, 2008, 08:29 PM it works with humbucker on the neck position too. you will need a push/pull pot. when the p/p is up you get the bridge/neck (5th position) and the bridge/middle/neck (4th position) combs.

Brilliant! Thank you
Just out of interest, when the push/pull is up and i have bridge/neck in the 4th position and bridge/middle/neck in the 5th, what will the other 3 positions be? - the same as when the puch/pull is down?
Also, what pots and cap would you recommend? I've got 250K pots on my standard tele which i'm very happy with, but will they produce different results with this diagram?
thanks again
jefrs July 5th, 2008, 06:30 AM I know this is for a strat but with a 5-way switch it has many interesting possibilities

w0odman July 5th, 2008, 10:13 AM Here's mine. I have a 3 way switch wired like a tele, the middle pup wired to a 2 way mini toggle(either on or off), and both buckers splittable with a push pull volume knob. I personally like this over a 5 way superswitch, The only thing that I can't get is the middle pup all by itself. But all three together sounds close.

let me make it clearer: 1st position-neck/2nd-neck+middle/3rd-middle/4th-middle+bridge (pp UP=m+b+n)/5th-bridge (pp UP=b+n).
i use the 250K p/p pots Fender sells and they're pretty good. at first i was worried about their small size, but i've install afew and they all work fine. Allparts, CGE and DiMarzio pots they all have a good reputation too. as for caps, it depends on your taste and the pickups you use. you can try different values, like .022, .033, .047. for teles, my favorite is the .033. just don't buy any ceramic disc caps, they're crap. Orange Drops are a great non expensive choice.

thanks again porto leone, you're a great help.
If my GFS humbucker comes with 4 wires, do i just solder both negative wires in the same place, and both positive wires in the same place (supposing i dont want to coil tap)?:?:

no, no. i don't know the color code of GFS, but the extra 2 wires are for splitting, out of phase, parallel/series etc. options. if you don't use them, solder their ends together and wrap them with electrical tape to avoid unwanted contacts.
