1962 strat value???

hey guys. Me and my friend buy and sell guitars to make money, we go to pawn shops, etc. anyway, we were at his granny's house for the weekend and spotted a pawn shop on the way back, so we check it out and there is a beat up green 62 original strat. we bought it for $400. (i know, its a great deal!) but i'm sure we can get a lot of money for it (and i dont have a lot of money) so how much could i get for it?

by the way sorry i don't have pictures yet the guiotar is at his house and he is gone till the end of summer.

spent, and most likely a great deal more than that.

how beat? lots of original parts or not? you'll need to have somebody
take a look at things under the pickguard - let's pretend that only the
neck and body are '62 and everything else was replaced, you still got
a heck of a steal of a bargain! even if it was just a '62 neck on a newer
body you'd still triple your money just selling the neck!

impossible to say anything for sure without detailed pictures.

I find it hard to believe any pawnshop in the year 2008 would let an old
Strat go for $400 without reason of insanity or complete & utter ignorance.
they must think it's not the real deal or it could be hotter than a $20 pistol

okay, well it did happen. i don't have photos yet but i will as soon as I can, which will most likely be a while, because like i said, he is out of town and the day before he gets back, i'm going to pennsylvania, so don't call me a liar. also, this pawn shop wasnot in the nicest part of town (which is a little scary), which may help explain the price tag. the reason the guitar is with him is because he has over 50 guitars and has a climate-controlled room for them.(florida's climate is a little harsh on guitars).

also the neck and body appeared to be original, we haven't really had everything check out on it. the guitar is VERY beat up. the serial number was difficult to read and i recall was 7??59.

You really would have to take the neck off and check under the hood. If it is too good to be true..... probably is.

That being said, even a MIJ RI 62 wouldn't be a bad deal at $400 if it wasn't too beat up, or at least if the wear & tear was finish only i.e. doesn't need new electonics or has a really screwed up neck.

there are some GREAT fakes going around these days, and even some reissues are hard to spot. But, for $400, hard to go wrong if you have the cash to start with.

If ou don't already know or have the resources, I suggest you grab a good book on authenticating old fenders. Especially if your going to make this some kind of business.

i'll be in hershey, but wont have the guitar with me. i will have pics, but i didn't really start ths thread so others could look at it, i just wanted a price. but that guy said he would pay 50x what we paid. if we find that it is all original, im sure we can work something out.

uhh, without pictures - and lots of 'em, in detail - you don't have a leg to
stand on as far as anybody here on TDPRI making any sort of value assessment.

that based merely on what you've stated thus far! :wink:

if you didn't start the thread "so others can look at it" then I don't really
see your point for posting in the first place - so: howsabout you go pay
a Fender authority (such as Gruhn Guitars, or any other reputable dealer)
two hundred bucks for an appraisal and then get back to us when you have
something other than hearsay, OK?

first off, you don't come here for appraisals if you are serious.

second, especially with no pictures or more detailed information and documentation. values vary wildly based on the particulars.

the whole pretense of the post is suspect. color me jaded.

Guitar fully Dismantled and all parts closely photographed. All Cavities,
Neck Heal, Pocket / Date, Rear of Pick guard showing bases and wiring of pups
etc. Every Nut and Bolt......so to speak. Then ask members to give their
opinions. If you want a quick Retail Value.......just go to www.gbase.com
click on Gear Search for all Dealers Stock of that guitar.

Ok, so assuming that it is real & original...below is one that is going for over $28,000. So that should give you an idea of what it could potentially sell for. But, you have to understand that now-a-days pawn shop owners all have access to the internet & are well aware of the respective going rates of all things vintage. By that logic, I would assume that the guitar that you & your friend are in possesion of may not be as they say "100% original". Now, if it is...thats the pawn shop dream that every guitar player has & I say congrats!

$28,000! Gag, chuff, uh.....I sold my '62 Strat in about 1981-2 for $800. Well played, sunburst paint and neck finish rubbed off. Refretted with medium jumbo frets, but otherwise all original. Now it'd be worth really big bucks?

About 10 years ago, I had a shot at one of these that seemed legit, for $5K. Even then, that was half price relative to the collector's market, but I didn't like the way it played... Doh! :rolleyes:
