Bass players I need some advice.

I have a Peavey Millennium (cheap but plays great bass) with passive noisy stock pups installed.

I want to switch to an active Jazz pickup set. EMG was my first thought but they don't make a 5 string sized Jazz model.

Do you have any suggestions that would help to liven the sound of this bass up? Right now it is a a bit muddy and I am looking for something with an edge and clarity in the low end.

Thanks in advance.

not being a fan of active pickups in generaly, EMG's in particular - I can recommend Vintage Vibe's J pickup as a great passive J replacement - strong clear bottom, lot's of punch and highly detailed mids/hi's. I have them in my 75 RI and like them a lot. Again - these are passive.

If you were willing to rout the top. Norstrand Big Singles and Dual Coils have a great reputation. The Big Single is available in 2 version - 1 big coil and a split coil design that is hum cancelling. I have a Lakland 55-01 inbound that I'm planning on trying the split coil version in. Again - passive pickups.

To my ear, the active's I have heard have been kinda polite. Quiet indeed but too polite for my taste. I'm a big fan of passive single coils so YMMV
