Our bass player is going to assemble a P style bass. What are good pickup choices for our Country/Swing bass player?

I like my Seymour Duncan "60's Pride " Antiquity 2 Pbass pickup.
Not too bright. Good bass response.

Lots of good ones out there. I've been very happy with the Peter Florance "Voodoo" pickups that I've put in a few P-Basses (his website is kinda messed up, shows J-Bass pickups instead of P-Bass, but he makes them!).

I'd think Bill Lawrence's P-46 would probably be a very good pickup, too, and the price is nice (again, the website is in a state of flux, but contacting Bill and/or Becky ought to work).

Cheers, Tim

The Fender Original Vintage '62 P bass pickup is plenty good for my taste. There was a fair number of them manufactured in the '90s, and some music stores may have them as dusty old stock now... I got mine for $90 Can.

+1 on the Voodoo P-Bass pickup. It nails the Donald "Duck" Dunn tone. Deep, full and articulate.

I really like the Vintage Vibe pickup. Here's an mp3 sample. Watermelon Man (http://w3.gorge.net/mfbrown/vvwater.mp3) - no EQ, no compression, TI Jazz flats. Radial DI into ProTools

Mine was custom ordered with Alnico III magnets and a slight overwind. The build took 2 days and the cost was very reasonable. I also have a set of his J pickups and a Tele bridge pickup. They all seem really well done to me.

Others I really like
Lawrence for clear, quiet & modern, Lawrence P46 sample (http://w3.gorge.net/mfbrown/p46.mp3)
Aero - punchy, raw, still vintage,
Lollar similar to the Aero - maybe a little more polite, a little bright to my ear

Vintage Vibe is still my pick these days.

I have a Bill Lawrence p-bass replacement and Tim it goes well with the stainless flat wounds.

If he hasn't already gotten the body, I would suggest the old style single coil P-bass. Every time I hear one live I'm impressed with how great they sound. There's something about that position on the body and the s/c. Even the Squier Bronco bass that has a similar configuration sounds surprisingly good, despite being short scale and probably a ceramic mag p/u.

I'm using DiMarzio's DP 122(?) P bass pickup...works well for country AND blues. How do I know? Because I play the same P bass for both bands!
