Fatmanstratman June 6th, 2008, 06:15 AM Over the last week or so, the forum seems to be grinding slowly to a halt.
I'm using Internet Explorer.
Even logging into the TDPRI takes much longer than usual, and if I try to open a thread, I invariably have to sit and watch the little green boxes slowly slide accross the bottom of my screen while I read the message "Waiting for: http:/etc. etc. etc."
When I've (finally) read a thread, if I click on the "Telecaster Discussion Forum" link at the top of the page to take me back to the threads list, I go through the same old wait again.
Opening the next thread? Same again...
Typing a reply and pressing the "Preview Post" button? Same again....
Is it just me? This is not just from one terminal - I'm getting the same slow response at work, at home, and at Cortijo Fatman over in Spain.....
musicalmartin June 6th, 2008, 06:19 AM The BBC have just done a broadband test you can log onto to check your local speed. The whole UK internet is getting slower by the day .

TDPRI June 6th, 2008, 08:03 AM I think it is just you FMSM. I have no other complaints and it's working great or me. You are probably closer to the server than I am. It's in Quebec Canada.

I just did the test. It returned 1.5 mbps. Is that normal, fast or slow?

Mines at 3.2mbps...
CatfishStudios June 6th, 2008, 11:27 AM No problems on my side of the pond.... just did speed test

Ive noticed TDPRI has a great server..always super fast for me..
Grin'n'pick June 6th, 2008, 11:31 AM No problems here FMSM and I'm the UK, it seems pretty fast to me.
TDPRI June 6th, 2008, 12:03 PM FMSM have you installed any "internet security" software? There is some out there that really bogs down web surfing at sites like the TDPRI that are heavily "session cookie" based.
Even the 8.0 version of AVG anti-virus added a web site "checker" that bogged things down on my system until I turned that off.
In general, the TDPRI is recognized as pretty quick. We did have some server problems yesterday and the site slowed to a bog and then died. But that hasn't happened but once in the past 3 or 4 months.
If it was a problem outside of your system then I'd be getting a lot of complaints and having the same problems as everyone else.
Slow Reflexes June 16th, 2008, 12:24 PM n/m
CatfishStudios June 16th, 2008, 12:55 PM I get about 1 second delay...but Its about the same as any site I visit...never 5 seconds... Who is your provider?
Slow Reflexes June 16th, 2008, 01:33 PM n/m
TDPRI June 16th, 2008, 05:34 PM It's got to be a problem with something on your computer. 8,000 people come here every single day-- most 3 or 4 times a day. If it was a generalized problem I would have hundreds of complaints. I don't have any anecdotal reports from any one except the odd one or two.
You are running something on your system that is causing the halts. Unfortunately, only you know what you are running.
Our server in Quebec is on a Tier one pipe and isn't slow in Oregon or Oceania. Not bragging, just saying it's not the distance. I'm 1,800 miles from Quebec and work on this site and others on the server for countless hours every day. If it was slow due to distance I'd have problems too.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
tazzboy June 16th, 2008, 06:32 PM Sound to me like you need to do disk defragment and Scan disk on your computer. Follow by clearing your browser history, and cache that might speed thing up a bit.
tazzboy June 16th, 2008, 06:33 PM I'd also recommend using Firefox over Internet Explorer.
Slow Reflexes June 17th, 2008, 12:21 AM n/m
tazzboy June 17th, 2008, 02:03 PM Yeah upgrading your computers processor and memory and video card does help.
Slow Reflexes June 17th, 2008, 02:18 PM
Sorry; shoulda just kept my mouth shut. If I could delete my posts, I would have done so.
Edit: Hey, I guess I can, kinda...
TDPRI June 17th, 2008, 02:50 PM There's no reason to apologize and certainly no reason to edit your posts to nothing.
The TDPRI is full of millions of posts and that's the only thing that makes this place the great. So, please, leave your posts intact.
Thanks
PeterUK June 17th, 2008, 05:07 PM No problems here - 75 miles from Cambridge.
 Peter
J-man June 17th, 2008, 05:30 PM The forum is fast enough on my end.
My connection changes between 0.5mbps - 5mbps, depending upon what time I use the net. (Capped connection)
e-merlin June 17th, 2008, 06:10 PM One thing to consider is your provider and type of service. Cable provided service can slow down if there are a lot of people in your neighborhood subscribed and lots of them are logging on at the same time. I know there seem to be times when ours slows down.
Also, our cable provider is limiting bandwidth by providing different speeds for different costs.
Big John September 12th, 2008, 01:29 PM 7.30PM in the UK and my TDPRI is as if it is running in treacle !, i am using Firefox and then tried Safari on my Mac but to no avail.
My 'net connection is sound and fine with other web sites.
Telenator September 12th, 2008, 02:50 PM Yeah, seriously slow here in CT and from CA where I checked in a few days ago. Extremely slow.
maestrovert September 12th, 2008, 03:23 PM i'm in N.Central Michigan....i waited over a minute for this thread to open just now....
before the upgrade, pages here loaded in a snap, now ever thread i've clicked on is noticeably s l o w e r.....
There have been no changes to my computers/security software/settings, and my ping times for other sites are unchanged...
i sent out a couple of pm messages just before the problems yesterday...did they go out, or were they lost ? anyway for me to tell ?
TDPRI September 12th, 2008, 03:37 PM We are experiencing some extremely high server loads and we're not sure why this is. I've hired some server consultants to look into the problem and I'm just waiting for their report. Usually the server load is expressed as a number and a typical load is 2 or less, but today and part of yesterday the load has fluxuated between 17 and 55.
I'm fully aware of it and working on it.
Maestrovert -- go to your PM control panel, click on the Sent items folder and you'll see if your PMs were sent or not. But I know of no reason why any PMs would not have gone out unless you happened to send them at the exact moment when the server went down yesterday.
By the way, the problem that come up with the server yesterday was caused by an action that I took when trying to lessen the server load factors. So, this is a problem that we are working on, but we do not believe that it is due to the upgrade in software we made on Sunday.
maestrovert September 12th, 2008, 03:42 PM Thanx Paul !
if i may, i can recommend the free tests at www.pcpitstop.com to y'all....
they're safe & secure, an' non invasive....
oh, an' i've no affiliation with 'em either....
soundhound6 September 12th, 2008, 04:09 PM I got a reading of 1.5Mbps.
I have noticed half the sites I visit, including this one, have been very slow and the rest
only marginally faster.
I'll have to check my settings, to see if I can make an adjustment.
I have been less than happy with my "High speed internet service" to say the least!
If it was a car...it would be in the scrap heap by now.LOL

TDPRI September 12th, 2008, 06:53 PM We're still working on it.
Some things are better, but we're not finished yet.
Big John September 13th, 2008, 04:01 AM Thanks Paul, if it's any use to you ... it is now Saturday 10AM over here and it is appreciably faster than it has been, probably back up to 'normal' in fact.
TG September 15th, 2008, 05:01 PM I'm not hugely knowledgable about what goes on inside or beyond my computer, but the past several days I've been having to reload about 6 times to get one of these pages to load fully to the bottom. Keeps saying 'done' when it isn't. I'm using the latest Firefox. I'm on a crap rural dialup connection, I know...but all other websites are working OK.
Hope you sort it out soon. (And thank you for all your work here.)
TDPRI September 15th, 2008, 05:17 PM TG, there's no way to gauge what could be causing you that problem. Pages are loading fast again for the most part with some minor glitches off and on during the day. But I can only assume it's the dial up connection on your end timing out. The TDPRI page is a pretty massive thing compared to other webpages you load -- we've got a lot of content on each page.
tazzboy September 15th, 2008, 05:23 PM The only pages I have notice slowing down now is in the other section (aka tele tech, amp, stratocaster etc.) Other than that there are times that it moves just fine.
Daddydex September 16th, 2008, 12:57 PM I must admit this site is still moving excruciatingly slow for me. I have made no changes to Mozilla and every other site I visit is moving at warp speed. Any ideas?
Dan
gtech September 16th, 2008, 01:02 PM yeah, it's the same for me...
Daddydex September 16th, 2008, 01:18 PM Plus it does not update the threads like it once did. In other words, if I have already read the latest post in a particular thread it will still show that there are unread posts.
Dan
AnthemBassMan September 16th, 2008, 02:31 PM -Yeah, it's still slow for me too. I'm using IE7 and also the new Google Chrome. Both are slower than molasses in the middle of winter. It's like this on all of the forums here for me. Maybe once in a while a page will load just fine, but as soon as I click on a topic it slows down again.
L8R,
Matt D.
popthree September 16th, 2008, 02:40 PM been very slow here all day for me
Alamo September 16th, 2008, 02:51 PM slower than molasses in the middle of winter
Lmao ..........
but it's sad & true for me aswell.
hockey_head September 16th, 2008, 02:54 PM very slow for me today, at work maybe local network busier than normal like maybe everybody's streaming tunes and vids or something.
TDPRI September 16th, 2008, 04:48 PM We've had a busy day today with a larger than normal number of concurrent users online at the same time.
This has not gone unnoticed. We've optimized this server as much as possible.
So, we've spec'd out a newer, bigger, faster and twice as expensive server with our current webhost and plan to sign the papers for it tomorrow.
I'll make a general announcement about this as the timing is finally scheduled for the switch over the the new server. There will be a small amount of downtime as the files are transfered but since we're using the same webhost there will be no delays while waiting for a new domain to propagate.
The new server has:
8 Xeon CPU Cores (compared to one core P4 now)
Double the HD capacity on Mirrored 15,000 RPM SCSI drives
100% increase in RAM (6 Gigs)
The newest versions of 64 bit Linux, Apache, PHP and SQL Server
So the new server should FLY! And, hopefully for quite a while too.
I would anticipate this change to happen next week or the week after.
Thanks for your patience.

More power Oh oH OH
Brandon Roy September 17th, 2008, 12:19 AM The first thing you all can do is get rid of that peice-o-crap software we call internet explorer, and get a much faster and stable web browser. The Opera browser is the fastest in my opinion (with the new google chrome browser close behind, but it's in beta if you don't mind) OR get Firefox. It's pretty fast too and close to Operas speed. That should help out a bit. I prefer Opera. It's been around a long time and it's awesome
tazzboy September 17th, 2008, 12:50 AM I have firefox with extension of faster fox which helps.
