WickedGTR May 29th, 2008, 09:29 PM Somebody just sent me this link... it's from about 20 years ago, on the Tonight Show, with my old band.
I was using a really early gtr-to-midi pickup on my strat, The Cellos and Choir are coming of an Ensonq Mirage sampler (!).
Funny.

BB May 29th, 2008, 09:42 PM Too cool! I remember seeing that. Awesome remake of a great, classic tune. Your tone and phrasing are as inspiring today as they were 20 years ago!
eddie knuckles May 29th, 2008, 10:31 PM Thank you for that. Very nice.
e-merlin May 29th, 2008, 11:19 PM Very cool. I've always though Chris Isasc had a great voice, and a pretty good sense of humor. Your work on that was slick. How long did you play with Chris? I'm assuming, by your handle, you were playing on Wicked Game.
getbent May 30th, 2008, 01:38 AM Jimmy... I loved that whole album... I wish you'd make a long thread or post an article on recording those songs... I still think "Lie To Me" is just an awesome study in developing tension and release.. you wailed on that song!
I'd love to hear details, tips and tricks... My brother and I saw you with Chris probably 5-8 times... Just a great, great recording and live band.
woodman May 30th, 2008, 02:55 AM man, that gave me a kick in the brain! yeah baby!
olewichita May 30th, 2008, 03:10 AM awesome jimmy... between you, johnny marr, poison ivy, jimmie vaughan and the reid brothers the 80s wasn't a complete wasteland for hip guitar... tj
Gunslinger May 30th, 2008, 03:13 AM Awwww cool
WickedGTR May 30th, 2008, 09:12 AM Hey, Thanks everyone-
I wish you'd make a long thread or post an article on recording those songs... I still think "Lie To Me" is just an awesome study in developing tension and release..
I haven't listened to that in a long time- but what I remember is that, like a lot of his songs, the whole thing, intro, verse chorus, bridge, etc, followed the same chord pattern all the way through.... The challenge was always to make it sound like distinctly different parts, to make the chorus sound different that the verse, the second verse to have some development from the first verse. etc. Most of the songs on that album were like that. Wicked Game was like that too.
That being said...the guitar part on Lie to Me' is pretty much based on the same riff all the way through- it's just played slight differently to counterpoint what the voice is doing, and to make a 'verse', 'chorus' etc.
The song was in g minor, and I used a capo so I could play it as if in e minor and have some 'open' strings to use. That also forced me to invert the second chord in the pattern- going up instead of down, and I think that's where the basic riff came from, if that makes sense.
Thanks again- Jw
TeeBird May 30th, 2008, 09:14 AM I have that CD and always really liked that cover and your playing on it.
TeeBird May 30th, 2008, 09:17 AM In fact this (crappy) surf instrumental version of it I did a couple years ago was basically nicked from your version.
Edit: removed...since I didn't pay ASCAP or BMI.
PM me if you want to hear it.
WickedGTR May 30th, 2008, 12:02 PM Cool version (I heard it before you took it down), never thought of it as an instrumental, but it works- thanks-
David Barnett May 30th, 2008, 12:07 PM Really nice cover, except they got the chord changes wrong in the chorus.
TeeBird May 30th, 2008, 12:45 PM Thanks WG.
FirstBassman May 30th, 2008, 01:54 PM it's from about 20 years ago, on the Tonight Show, with my old band.
Love that. My "old band."
That's like my favorite quote from George Harrison during the T Wilburys days.
"I like being able to write songs with other people. I didn't get to do that with my previous band."
Really George. What band would that have been?
Love Isaak and all his band members. Saw him two years ago at Wolf Trap. Very nice show.
