J-man May 27th, 2008, 04:29 PM The best thing about playing bass is that when you've been playing for a few hours, and you decide to pick up a guitar again, your fingers feel so much stronger!
garytelecastor May 27th, 2008, 04:31 PM Well..you basically were given the guitar....so ya got that goin' fer ya.

First off, let me say: Best Thread Title Ever!
Secondly: Great bass!!! My first bass was an Epiphone P-bass clone that looked just like yours (except different headstock shape). I loved that bass. I swapped the el-cheapo pickup for an EMG Select (still pretty cheap at $24). I went with flatwound strings for a big, beefy, Motown thump. It was great!
A bandmate who'd bought a new bass gave it to me. When I was moving last year (I'd already gotten myself a new 5-string), I passed it on to yet another bandmate. It's the bass that keeps on giving!
Play it. Love it. Feel the Groove. I highly recommend flatwound strings on a P-Bass. It's classic.
Best of luck!!
mudbean May 30th, 2008, 06:19 PM Welcome to the brotherhood, Chief! I like you better already.
... and, I believe that playing the bass can be as easy or as hard as you make it.

Tell me about that Acoustic Bass amp. How's it sound. Those were pretty good amps for bass in their day.

Perfect little amp. this one's a 20. just right for home practice, very clean sound, even with the volume all the way up. it would probably work well for a semi-unplugged gig, too. it isn't powerful enough for a full rock band but as for what i got it for, it fits the bill (and for a good price).

Not wishing to hijack the thread but I am interested in flatwounds, are they much harder on fingers than round wounds? I am primarily a guitarist but love bass and turn the treble off to get what I like as a bass tone, I think flats would be a good move but these rounds seem easy on the fingers.

Thanks Tim, I'll get me a set, any brand that's outstanding or to stay away from?

beep.click June 4th, 2008, 10:24 PM I've tried a number of brands of flatwounds, and they're all different. Even when the gauges are the same, some brands are stiffer. Also, the different brands have different degrees of smoothness -- some are flatter than others!
The ones I really like are Ernie Ball Group III's. Very, very smooth, and flexible. And they sound good.
pickinpete June 5th, 2008, 09:12 PM I run fender flatwounds on mine....but the bass player in our group prefers half rounds. A happy medium =]

+1! And on the GHS strings, too.

I prefer the best of both (all?? ) worlds when it comes to strings. I have 2 fretted basses with roundwounds (Optima Gold), a fretless with D'addario Chromes flats (Excellent strings! brighter than normal flats. ) and the new bass coming home next week is fretted with La Bella tapewounds.
But the unwritten rule of bassists is that a Precision must have flats. Put some D'addario Chromes on it. You should like them, easier on the fingers and turn the bass into a thump machine.
