Somebody just gave me a Toneport GX

What do i do with this thing?

I met a guy who works for Line6 on an airplane, he sent me a Toneport, I'm downloading the software now.

I don't know a lot about music technology especially on computers, I even have a hard time with Garage Band. What are the basic things this thing does? Does it basically simulate different amps and effects, is that the story?

He mentioned there's some sort of "online component," anybody here do anything with that?

Ok even I can figure this out. The presets alone will take days to wade through. Sounds great in headphones but I should say i'm not that discriminating or knowledgeable.

Couple of questions:

Do you know of a way to simulate a bass while playing a six string guitar, so I can lay down some reasonable bass tracks? Can either Toneport of Garage Band do this?

With Garage Band, I'm having a hard time finding decent country drum patterns, and also jazz patterns. Do I need to buy "jam packs" for these or am I missing something that's built into Garage Band?

The way I've been doing it is in Garageband. Under the vocal effects it lets you adjust the pitch...you can go an octave lower or higher, or anywhere in between. If you go one octave lower with a guitar, it sounds just like a bass. I dont think the Gearbox software has a feature to do that, but I could be wrong...it does just about everything else. Maybe Getbent knows a better way.

BTW, the Toneport and Gearbox software are amazing. When I was a kid, we'd shell out lots of money (to us, anyway) to record demos in the crappiest studios with only 8 tracks...and walk 5 miles in the snow to get there. haha.
