Just broke my Seagull...

I feel like a complete IDIOT.

Just got up off the couch to drag my silly butt to bed, and what did I do? I put my arm down on my Seagull (sitting next to me on the couch) and basically used it as leverage to push myself up. Not on purpose, I just wasn't thinking or paying attention.

DOH!!!:oops: :mad:

It made kind of a "boing" sound with all of the strings ringing. I'll pull 'em off tomorrow and see how bad the damage is, but for now, I can push and tap the top and tell I popped a brace loose.

I can be a real dumb*ss sometimes. At least I have a great tech.

I guess as long as you didn't hear splintering noises, it's probably a simple repair, but still... Ouch!

I checked it today. It's one of the diagonal braces toward the back of the top. One end is popped loose. The brace isn't broken, and no wood is damaged, just needs glued back down. Could have been MUCH worse.

On the lighter side, I told my wife about it this morning, also told her I felt like a complete idiot. She wrapped her arms around me, and said very sweetly "you're not a complete idiot, just fairly stupid".:lol: What would I do without her?

Yep, I used to think that I was only a partial idiot, but I have come to realize that I am, in fact, complete.

This is only a good thing if your wife will let you buy a new acoustic. Then you can fix your old one yourself and have two acoustics. The fixed seagull can be the beater, and the new one can be your good one.

Seagulls are my faves and relatively easy to work on. Bet that's just a popped brace and a reglue will have ya back strummin' in no time.

Ah, herein lies the rub... I own eight acoustics. Several are VERY nice. I bought the Seagull to travel with, I do lots of road gigs, some of them requiring flights, and I really didn't like the idea of my nice pieces being assaulted by baggage handlers. It's turned into my number one go-to guitar. I pick it up before anything else I have, and as I said, I have some really nice guitars. There's just something about it.

It is just a loose brace, I'll get it fixed this week, and it'll be back on the road. It was just a real bummer to do something so stupid. I got off easy this time, and I will now make sure it never happens again.

hey, jake, a COMPLETE idiot would have no idea how cool seagulls are...don't be so hard on yourself.

A loose brace is not really a big deal. Take it to a tech and they should have it fixed in no time.

It's an S-6+, the gloss top cutaway model with the QII electronics. Fantastic guitar. I have been looking at those mini-jumbos, they are nice! I think my next gull is going to be a parlor though. I've played a couple recently, and they are quite impressive.

I checked out a Seagull Mini-Jumbo Performer Cut away with QII but unplugged (I was in a hurry). I was very impressed and will go back to give it another whirl to hear how it sounds through an amp.

The QII system is by FAR the best sounding system I own. I have a Fishman set-up in my D-35, and a Baggs set-up in my J200, this makes 'em both sound like toys.

I really like the mix feature. I don't know how much you looked at it, but with the mix knob centered, it detents, and gives you just the piezo. Roll the mix knob left or right, to mix the mic in either in or out of phase. Highly useable, and really sweet.

The mic is prone to feedback in full band situations. Bass guitar and kickdrum will wreak havoc with it on a loud stage. In these situations, I only use the piezo. It sounds great by itself, and in a full mix, works just fine. Most of my gigs though are either solo, or with my three piece acoustic outfit (2 guits and a mando) and the mic works great, and sounds really nice. I've noticed I get the best, and most faithful acoustic reproduction with the mic mixed about half to three quarters in with the piezo.

Watch your bass and treble controls, they have a very wide sweep, and a little goes a long way when you're adjusting them.

I have had the guitar a year, and gigged it around 120 dates. I love it.

Ahh yes, complete idiot, I resemble that...

About 10 years ago, in a ridiculous effort to woo a young lady, I slung my Seagull on my back (without straplocks of couse) with the intention of serenading said young lady by moonlight on Stinson Beach. I got halfway through the parking lot and the strap let go. Blam! The top separated from the body half-way around. Took it in for repairs, they glued it back, and I'm still strumming years later.

The great thing about those cedar tops is that they are so soft and so easily scratched and marred. You end up with a great historical record of all your foibles.

Thanks for the input Jake, I just came back from the store with a brand new Seagull with QII electronics! Mini Jumbo with cutaway, I'm really excited even if my wife isn't :wink: I'll start a new thread and post pics later. I'm bringing it to the jam tonight and will put it through its paces with guys on drums and bass. You were dead on with your description of the knobs, it sounded great through the PA and a Twin at the music store, and even with the mic off the piezo saddle didn't sound quacky at all.

I can't believe how well this thing plays, thanks again Jake!:grin:
