Thanks for the headsup...It's great to hear bender in modern stuff...

however...the bender playing is rudimentary at best although I give hime a A effort...and the keyboard in country rock sounds out of place.. IMHO. Sounds like TP and the HB with a bender...which is what it is.. and the song is forgettable... Just makes me miss the Byrds even more

I liked the organ sound in the country rock song.
Certainly worked for The Band.

Trivia #1: "Lover of the Bayou" (along with "Chestnut Mare" and some others) was originally written for a Broadway show along with Jacques Levy that was to be based on Peer Gynt.

Trivia #2: The Byrds live "Untitled" album is the only live album (as far as I know) recorded at my alma mater - Queens College (in NYC).

I may be splittin' hairs but I think of The Band as more folk-rock and and IMHO not in the same league or area code at the Clarence-powered (country-rock) Byrds...or any previous (folk-rock) Byrds for that matter.. But thats just me . For me its the Byrds, Beatles and then everyone else is a blur

Ya know, I made an mp3 of "Orphan of the Storm" and Ive been tooling around listening to it...and the tune has sort of grown on me...it reminds me of the Continental Drifters version of "Song for You" from one of the Gram Parsons tribute compilations..the sound quality is pretty poor and I wonder if the bender would be more pronounced, and perhaps less elementary soundings in either a studio recording or decent quality live recording.

The other guitar player and drummer I play with have gotten a bit disful on the cosmic country stuff ...the other guitar player want to do all rhythm and blues because then he gets to sing lead on everything. (We walk into a country jam session and he tells me we need to play some R&B because thats what they want to hear, but that another story...)He has also suggested we do more Tom Petty tunes...so...heheheh...Mudcrutch has opened a door, perhaps a grand compromise...or a good gotcha...Im gonna work up some stuff and pop it on them....

I love playing in my traditional country band (50's, 60's) but I am thinking sundays I need to be playing in a cosmic country rock band.....

I thought I was a pretty big TP fan, but how is that Mudcrutch when it's obviously fairly recent and not from pre-Heartbreakers? It looked like Steve Ferrone, Benmont Tench, and Scott Thurston, but Petty on bass.

Are they doing a side project?

It's Petty, Benmont and Mike Campbell (both of whom were in later versions of Mudcrutch), with two of the original members of Mudcrutch, Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh. They recorded an album last summer, which came out last week. They did a little mini-tour too, which just wrapped up last week.

I just found out yesterday that they had done this; I had no idea. I immediately went out and got the album. It's lots of fun, with a fair bit of bender action.
