MXR Phase 90 volume increase?

I just got a used Phase 90 pedal and notice that it increases the volume level. Is this a known issue, and is there a way to reduce or control the volume on the board? I'd rather that it was unity gain.

PS - I like the effect, it works fine otherwise.

Thanks, VW

I had a delay pedal that increased my volume (or so I thought) when it was engaged. It was very noticeable.

It turned out that I had a crappy patch cable and the amplifier in the delay pedal boosted the signal just enough to overcome the weakness of the bad cable.

When I replaced the cable the problem went away.

I believe that is fairly normal for the Phase 90. Mine does it too.

BYOC has a Phase 90 clone you can build that has a volume control on it.

Tele 2k, that is normal with the new MXR Phase 90s. Do a Google search and you will find plenty of info on a really simple mod.

It involves snipping a capacitor and that will reduce the clipping (distortion) and make it sound like the old vintage script versions from the 70s.

The Eddie Van Halen version of the Phase 90 has a button that switches from the vintage sound (non clipping) to the modern sound (clipping). If you ask me, it's a total gimmick and not worth the extra $$.

Keep in mind that if you snip the capacitor, it will void any guarantee you may have, but it's a very easy mod to reverse: a dash of solder on one joint.

I never did the mod myself, because I really, really like the way it sounds as is. I play with a clean sound and like having just a bit of clipping, and the increase of volume comes in handy when stepping into a solo. If it gets too loud, then I lower the volume on the guitar. To be honest, the volume boost isn't that noticeable on mine.

Thanks everyone, yes, I saw about the R28 mod, and may do that later (bought it used), but I also found that putting it first in the effects chain, it seems to work much better, as the TubeScreamer seems to level out the volume issue. I don't know why, but it seems to work better, not nearly as noticeable.

I would be interested if anyone here has done the R28 cut and how they like it since doing that...
