Well here in the uk i can't find a 40 wattish valve point to point at a reasonable price, they seem to all go for silly money on ebay.....so which one of these Ceriatone amps would be good for clean, country, jazzy, Atkins style mainly with a tele?

I go with the Pro, Bassman or Bluesbreaker. Enough clean headroom, but warm sounding.

According to the book "Chet Atkins: Me And My Guitars", Chet Atkins used a Fender Tweed Deluxe then switched to a Fender Tweed Pro before trading the Pro for a Standel.

So I say Pro or 5E3

**Incidently, I wanted the same style sound (CA) and I ended up going with the anti-tube amp...a Roland JC-90

Vikki - why not have a look at Denis Cornell's website, www.dc-developments.com? As well as his standard range of hand-wired valve amps, he builds custom amps to order as well. In fact he can be contacted by phone on 01702 610964. Explain exactly what it is you're after and I'm confident he'll sort you out.

Denis is a top bloke and a superb engineer. His stuff is justifiably moderately expensive, as it's hand-made, but it still represents better value than some of the so-called "boutique" stuff.

OK thanks great info.....seems as if the 5f4 could be the one to go with for this style of playing.......thanks for mentioning the jazz chorus, i have a half dozen solid state amps of different makes in the loft and i've never really given them time of day....perhaps time to dust them off and give them a try.
Question ....is the 5f4 or Pro the same as a Pro Reverb?
Did check out the Cornell amps a couple of years ago, will have to have another look.....

Atkins played a number of amps...the most famous was the Butts amplifier...the first to have built in echo. These amps were produced in the '50's in very small numbers....ATkins had one, Scotty Moore has one...very rare and expensive on the market. These amps probably replaced the tweeds that these guitarists had been using.
Personally, if I wanted to be playing clean country/jazz, I would be looking at a black face or silverface Fender Reverb amp...a Pro Reverb would do well for anything except extreme volumes. The modern Fender '64 Vibroverb RI is a great amp, and the 15" speaker would help impart a great warmth and roundness to the signal. A tweed Fender or clone would do well up to a certain volume point, but most of these amps have a bit higher gain in the preamp and breakup earlier than do the BF/SF Fenders. Plus, ATkins' music does well with just a touch of reverb, imo.

It is tough to get a good tube amp on these shores isnt it? Without breaking the bank anyway..

As a sidenote, good to know there's someone else interested in playing those styles in old blighty.

Sorry, that post didn't help you at all.

get a Dumble and be done with it...

just kidding...

But... since you're building your amp.... here's a quote from a chat on theGearPage.net talking about a modded 5e3 amp that Neil Young has.... the majority of the thread has nothing to do with your topic... except the last fellow that posted... here's his post...

Real Tweed Deluxes had several different PT's in them over the years, the most notable being a schumacker. It may or may not be able to handle the extra filament current of 6L6's.I build a 6L6 Deluxe and I use a 40 watt OT and a beefier PT and it has lots more headroom and still grinds like a muther. For serious grit use a 12AX7 in V1.For a softer bluesier sound use a 12AU7.The sound is close to the 6V6's but has more girth and volume to it.Definitely use a 10 watt cathode resistor.Nothing else needs to be changed and it does Neil's tone easily.Think Cinnamon Girl in double drop D.For that matter so does a regular Deluxe, just less volume.
I set mine up so you can use 6V6's,6L6's,KT66's and EL34's for a wider variety.

He's talking about adding headroom to the Deluxe circuit with a couple of mods....

that'd be my choice... if i were building one...

in fact... I'm gonna post this quote in the Headroom in small amp thread.. :)

Oh, I don't know...apart from Denis Cornell's excellent gear, there's the Cornford range, and there was a very positive review recently of the Matamp Adrian Ingram model, highly customisable and starting at under £1,000 including tax and delivery. Have a look: http://www.matamp.co.uk/ingram.htm

Yes the Fender and almost anything valve go pretty expensive over here, i was watching a Music Man RD 150 head on ebay last week and it went for around 350 pounds, i guess thats around 700 us.....it was way to potent for me but i think i would have gone for it, if it was less money. I think i'll order a chassis from Ceriatone for the 5F4 and see what parts we can purchase in the u.k.
Steve G you should hook up with a friend of mine Rob in Leek, he's a pretty good picker and a b bender nut.
Great info everyone.

5F4 is a GREAT choice. Fair amount of headroom but nasty when you crank 'em.

Just wondering how well the 5f4 would work with say a 15" speaker, any recomendations for a 15" speaker maker, i know a lot of the older amps seem to use a 15" JBL. Also would it be possible to make a head of the 5f4 or does it make for a very tall cab with the valves being mounted on the side of the chassis?

A 5F4 with a single 15" and the required 8 ohm OT would be a 5E5-A PRo.
Speaker choice is so subjective. I personally have no use for a JBL in a guitar amp. YMMV
YEs, you can build a tweed amp in head form. No, there is no problem with height of the cab or tube orientation???? Just envision the cab built as the combo is built but without the space for speakers, right? OR, do what Jim Marshall did and build the chassis with different orientation...tubes and trannies on top with front controls.

Just wondering has anyone around here ever built a Standel 25L15, i was searching around this morning but a schematic of that amp seemed a bit elusive, but i noticed that a guy in Canada was building a copy called the Invicta? I also notice there seemed to have been Standel repro chassis on Canadian ebay but i couldn't actually find one for sale....did the original Standel use 807 valves?
Thanks for the info and ideas.
Invicta amps....

Ted Weber has been working on a Standel kit with 807 valves now for a while, it's supposed to go on sale in the next months (you never know with Weber, sometimes it takes a while...)
Anyway, the preliminary schematics are available here (the Gaylon and the Willy - don't know how close they are to original Standels) http://www.tedweber.com/schematics/indexer.htm

Thanks everyone, Wally i checked the link and it seems in later years Atkins prefered the 50 Watt Music Man amps.....Roman thanks for the link.....Now to decide what to go with, i can get help from my father as he's into the old radio ham gear and equipment.
Thanks again...

I might just mention that when Chet came over to the UK in 1983 or thereabouts, he used a Peavey Special 130 for his clinic and the Her Majesty's Theatre concert. And very good it sounded!
